Symphony Volunteer Council of the
Alabama Symphonic Association, Inc.
President’s Message
We start another SVC year and look forward to building on the wonderful work that has been done by our
team of officers and volunteers. We are grateful for the team’s service and celebrate its success. The high-
lights included raising money at the 2017 Show House and awarding multiple scholarships from the Lois
Pickard competition. We congratulate Mimi Jackson, who was presented with the 2017 Sandra Apolinsky
Service Award at the ASO annual meeting in May, for her many years of volunteering for the Symphony.
I also want to thank our new officers, listed in the following sections, for their commitment to making our
next year a success. We are already planning the events for the fall and spring and will again start with a
Kick-off Membership Party on September 12th, from 6 to 8 pm at the 1814 Building, located at 1814 1st Ave
North. Mr. and Mrs. Corbin Day and Kim Morgan Jemison Day will be the hosts. This will be a great oppor-
tunity for us to bring in prospective new members and to introduce them to SVC members and our program
of activities. The SVC will then sponsor ASO Masterworks concert, “Opening Night with Brahms and Beetho-
ven”, on October 6th. Please join us for this wonderful event.
We are in the process of selecting a home for the 2018 ShowHouse and are open to additional suggestions
from our membership. We will be making the final selection soon. There will be many opportunities to help
with our events during the 2017-2018 year. Those opportunities include serving as an usher at a youth con-
cert, helping with the Lois Pickard Competition in January, and luncheon in February, bringing your special
goodies for a variety of events, helping with Guest Conductors or Artists, and volunteering at the Decora-
tors’ ShowHouse. There are at least 500 volunteer shift opportunities and we need your help.
We need to grow our membership this year so that we can continuously improve
our work and make it more rewarding as well. I look forward to working with all of
you toward another successful year for SVC in service to the Symphony and all that
it brings to the community.

Symphony Volunteer Council Salutes
Our Lois Pickard scholarship winners
at Carnegie Hall
Hauen Kim of Hoover, 16, was chosen as First Place
winner in the Strings Category of the Lois Pickard
Music Scholarship, sponsored by the Symphony Vol-
unteer Council. Hauen was also chosen as the Grand
Prize Winner and invited to play with the Alabama
Symphony Orchestra in March.
This summer she auditioned and participated as one
of 116 bright and gifted young musicians from across
the country in the National Youth Orchestra which
performed at Carnegie Hall in July and toured in Mexico, Ecuador, and Columbia. Hauen attends
Indian Springs School and was Concert Master of the Alabama Youth Symphony Orchestra 2016-
2017.
K'mya Burrell, 17, was chosen as Second Place Winner in the Brass/Winds category and was invit-
ed to be a part of the National Youth Orchestra02 this summer.
The NY02 provides the opportunity to work closely
with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The
NY02 performed in side by side concerts with select
members of the Philadelphia Orchestra in Philadel-
phia and at Carnegie Hall.
K'mya, a student at the Alabama School of Fine Arts,
was awarded first place in the Woodwind Category
at the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs in Hunts-
ville and was Principal Clarinet of the Alabama Youth
Symphony Orchestra 2016-2017.

Guest Artist Hospitality Committee
We need a few more members for the guest artist driving committee. It's fun to
meet the guest artists that come to town (and to hear them compliment our sym-
phony, which they almost always do!). Artists pick up from the airport works
best for teams of two so one person can wait in the temporary lot while the other
meets the flight
