Formal Wear - 25% Formal Wear counts for 25% of your final pageant score! Every contestant will be individually introducedon stage, with all the lights, sound and excitement! Contestants are scored on their poise and presentation on stage in formal wear. Thejudges are looking for a representative that is proud and comfortable with who she is and how she presents herselfonstage. Scores are based on the judges’ overall impressions, and the contestant’s ability to command both thejudges’ and the audience’s attention in a poised, graceful, and professional manner.

Choose a dress that reflects your unique personality. The color and style are your choice (see page22-23 for more details). The dress should help you feel confident and excited about the specialperson that you are! Keep in mind that one of the hallmarks of National American Miss is “age-appropriate.” While that perception may vary with every participant, and every person’sindividual point of view, please keep in mind that if there is a question in your mind prior to theevent if a given dress, on you, is stepping over the line, be aware that one or more judges maywell have that same concern and you may lose valuable score points from one or more judges.

As you are introduced on stage, you will be escorted. Your father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, godfather or any other friend may escort you on stage. This is such a great way to involve

your male family members. If no one is available, we will be happy to provide anescort for you at no cost. Remember, escorts at Nationals must be dressed in a suit or atuxedo. Formal military uniforms are also super!

Age Groups:Our experienced panel of judges scores contestants in the following categories:• Resume 15% • Poise and Presentation in Formal Wear 25% • Personality During an Interview 25%

• On-Stage Personal Introduction 25% • Community Involvement Project 10%At National American Miss we passionately believe that excellent judging is the backbone of an excellent pageant. In keeping with thatpassion, we bring in the very best selection of judges to be found anywhere in pageantry - bar none. To ensure unparalleled diversity, thejudges are “rotated” such that no one judge will score all the preliminaries as well as the final show for any given age group. This results ina carefully designed process where each age group is scored by more than fifteen different judges. The judges come from across thecountry and are highly qualified. Quality is no accident; and it is carefully built into our scoring process, based on decades of experience.

Overall Competitions & Scoring Breakdown

Miss (19-20) Teen (16-18) Jr. Teen (13-15)Pre-Teen (10-12) Jr. Pre-Teen (7-9) Princess (4-6)Age groups are assigned by the contestant’s attained age as of January 1 of the year of the competition.

Now...About the competitions!Resume - 15% As you undoubtedly know by now, National American Miss believes that each activity we provide should not onlybe fun, but also provide experiences that help equip you for life. We are now taking the next step in providing those real life skillexperiences. Beginning with this year’s national pageant, the national competition resume is no longer a fill-in-the-blanks form. Instead, byeight weeks prior to the pageant, we will be providing you with actual resume templates by which you can download and prepare your owncustom resume.

Ideally, preparing a resume is not a one-time thing. It is a process. A resume is something that you will want to have in file, on your computerat home, and continue to build and nurture over the years. If you already have been cultivating a resume, good for you! If you do not yethave one then it is never too early to start, no matter what your age!

With the assistance of college admission counselors and corporate human resources professionals, we will be providing you with not onlythe template, but also a how-to guide to prepare a resume which will be useful not only at the national pageant, but more importantly toassist you as you go through life.

Similar to the Community Involvement portion of the overall competition, the scoring of your resume is one in which you will receive thefull 15% score credit for following some simple guidelines in preparing your resume. Notably, this score is completely separate from the“Best Resume” competition. We fully expect that every competitor will achieve the full 15% of this score. Whether your goal is to one dayapply for college admission, apply for student leadership position at your school, or apply for a job, you will be one big step closer to successby having built a resume along the way.

20

Page 21: Official National Pageant Guidebook - National …my.namiss.com/guidebook/documents/NAM-National-Guidebook...National Pageant as well as compete for the title of National All-American

Personal Introduction - 25% Personal introduction counts for 25% of your final pageantscore. It’s a snap! During this competition, you will learn how to speak effectively using a microphone and how toconfidently and professionally present yourself on stage. You will take home the lifelong skills of introducing yourself and speaking on stageto a live audience. Public Speaking is a skill admired by all.

Contestants will introduce themselves on stage, saying their:• name • hometown • state• where they see themselves in the future and/or something interesting about themselves.

Contestants are scored on their ability to clearly, confidently, and effectively deliver a message on stage to the audience. The judges are lookingfor a representative who naturally conveys her own unique personality through her effective and engaging public speaking skills and naturallyconfident stage presence.

NEW! 60 second time limit. Good news!! No longer do you have to worry about whether you should prepare and memorize a super-longPersonal Introduction. Over the years, many girls have done so, often with disappointing results. Your Personal Introduction will be timed.

Now there is a 60 second time limit for Personal Introduction at Nationals. For your comfort and confidence, werecommend that you design your Personal Introduction to not be near in length to 60 seconds. Why have the additionalburden of worrying about keeping it just under 60 seconds? Give yourself some cushion.

Tip:The average great personal introduction is often around 25 to 35 seconds. Please be aware that the longer a PersonalIntroduction is, the more opportunity for mistakes. Plus, the introduction has the potential to seeminsincere, and lose the interest of the audience and / or judges.

Interview - 25% Interview counts for 25% of your final pageant score. It’s easy! You will talk one-on-one with each of the pageant judges. This is when you can really let your personality shine through. AtNational American Miss, the interviews are held one-on-one, with each of the interview judges. It is our goalto use this experience to equip each participant with one-on-one job interview skills.

You will take home valuable interviewing skills, such as making good eye contact, speaking confidently, andsitting properly during an interview. In a very real way, you are interviewing for the “job” of representing notonly your state, but your country. If you win the national title, you will be a representative of girls fromacross the country. Just like you, the judges would like for the new national representatives to be girls thatare friendly, naturally enthusiastic, and effective communicators.

Each judge wants you to do well. Their goal is to learn more about you, your ambitions, and your personality. They are looking for a representative who can engage in fun, intelligent conversation with an adult. They willnot trick you, or ask you questions with a right or wrong answer (for example, they will not ask you to“Name the Governor of your state”).

Community Involvement - 10% The Community Involvement project counts for 10% ofyour total score in the National American Miss and the National All-American pageants. A full 10% of your pageantscore will be automatically awarded to you when you show record of having completed 4 hours of community serviceat a local, area, or statewide service organization.

There are a lot of great charities and service organizations in which you can give your time. For example, you could play board games with the elderly at a local nursing home, volunteer to help with “Race For The Cure,” visitchildren in a community hospital, or clean up a local park. Volunteering your time is fun! You’ll be glad you did!

NEW! As part of our green initiative, and to make the process easier, we have done away with the paper forms! By November 15, all contestants will need to upload the documentation of their 4 or more hours of communityservice to namiss.com/CommunityInvolvement. As part of your documentation, you will need to upload ascanned letter of confirmation that you obtain from the organization’s manager. We want to see all the fun you hadhelping others!

Remember to take pictures of yourself as you perform your community service and wear your banner. Crowns are nowoptional, even somewhat discouraged, when making public appearances and community service. We want the emphasis tobe on serving, and sometimes crowns can get in the way of projecting that image of service. All entries will be consideredfor inclusion on the new NAM community service web pages, so please keep that in mind as you select your photos andmaterials to upload.

NEW! All Community Involvement participants are automatically entered in theGolden Achievement in Service Award competition for FREE.

See pages t and u, in the black & white forms section of this booklet, for more info about the Community Involvement project! 21
