TYPOGRAPHY

Typography is employed in such a way as to give NNCRVII materials a unique graphic style that contributes to its overall brand identity.

Typefaces are an important part of the NNCRVII identity. The constant use of the NNCRVII typefaces is essential to helping us launch a renowned and proficient brand. These typefaces must be clean, clear and easy to read. It is vital that they are used appropriately across all services, messages and materials.

It is vital that the Quark font be installed in all NNCRVII computers and NNCRVII partner printers.

Quark is a modern and flexible typeface. It’s authoritative but not intimidating. It should be used on all professionally printed NNCRVII communications, see list above.

In addition, use the font in diagrams, charts, tables, or when presenting technical information.

You can use Quark in different weights, sizes and colours within the colour scheme to create your own unique design style within your documents.

Secondary NNC typeface: Arial Main use: internal communications

Only in the absence of Quark.

ACCESSIBILITYAnd because certain NNCRVII audiences may have accessibility issues or print disabilities, the minimum typeface size for body copy is 12 point.

IMAGERYPhotography and illustrations are influential and emotive tools that express our ideals just as powerfully as colours and typefaces.

The NNCRVII is not only about making people well. It’s also about keeping them fit and helping them to make educated choices about their health. And the images that we use in our communications need to reflect this.

When selecting images for use in NNCRVII communications, think about whether they:

tell people that we value professionalism, equality and accessibility; enhance the reputation of the NNCRVII and reflect the pride we have in

our work; adhere to our communications principles.

“We will try to take the stigma out that the government stands on authority alone, one campaign at a time. NNCRVII along with other agency is the PEOPLE’S AGENCY, so every material should show a photo of dynamic of people who are stakeholders and or participants from a program or the staff in action.”

National Nutrition Council Region VII (nncrvii) Comprehensive Rebranding Guidelines

Our core purpose is health and nutrition Good example: pictures that support, or don’t contradict, our messages

about healthy lifestyles. Bad example: people enjoying smoking, or taking risks that might lead

to accidents or anything that has negative connotation Comment: not every picture actually has to promote health, but avoid

those that oppose our core purpose.

We are a people organisation Good example: pictures of real people – staff, clients, the public. Bad example: endless pictures of buildings, food or equipment. Comment: obviously, not every picture has to be of a person, but if it’s a

straight choice between a building and a person, choose the person.

We must be straightforward, accessible and clear Good example: clear diagrams, sharp pictures, well-drawn maps. Bad example: tiny photos, diagrams that have been photocopied so

many times they are unreadable.

We must be effective Good example: a drawing that shows clearly what a leaflet is about. Bad examples: a design behind text that makes the print difficult to

read.

These guidelines should help you think about images, but they cannot cover every decision you have to make. You need to use your judgment and preference. In particular, avoid clipart, copyrighted images, or any other made-up images from the internet. These puts forward a lack of effort and imagination, and can jeopardize looking like a crude ‘cut and paste’, rather than careful choice. The quality of such images, like that of other illustrations, can also be hard to control.

In general, photography offers a robust and more precise demonstration of real life. In most environments, photography is desirable to cartoons and illustrations.

Maintain a photo library with the best photos in storage for future use.

VOICE

Our written communications should be clear, concise, honest and open. The words we use should closely follow and support our principles and values.

They need to demonstrate our: professionalism; clarity; respect; accessibility; straightforwardness

If you are writing on behalf of NNCRVII, make sure your material is personal and direct:

Could your text be spoken out loud to the reader? Does it sound as if it’s being addressed to an individual?

By the nature of what we do, we often communicate about difficult, and sometimes painful, subjects. With this in mind, it may help to ask:

Do your words communicate genuine understanding and respect? Do they empower and inform the reader or listener?

Similarly, due to the complex subjects we deal with, the words we use need to be as simple and accessible as possible.

Think about the audience you are writing for and use the words you would use if you were speaking to them. This will help you write clearly and succinctly in a way that they will easily understand.

Writing in plain English will help all users understand your meaning:

Don't use long or difficult words when shorter or simpler ones will do.

Avoid jargon and explain any technical terms, even if you think your audience will understand them.

Page 17: Official National Nutrition Council Region 7 (NNCRVII) Brand Book

National Nutrition Council Region VII (nncrvii) Comprehensive Rebranding Guidelines

Use the active rather than passive voice, eg, ‘we will decide’ rather than ‘it has been decided’

Use short sentences containing one main idea; sentences in a paragraph should have a common theme.

Only use capital letters where they are really needed; as much as possible avoid acronyms and abbreviations.

“For promotional materials that is intended for Region VII distribution only, it is recommended (and must be used sparingly and tastefully), to incorporate a common Visayan Vernacular phrase especially if it is used to initiate an action.

“Principles on the psychology of advertising shall be applied in the creation of these materials and under ALL circumstances shall it be high quality and professional grade.”

CONTENT

The most important part is the content you provide. Clear, understandable and targeted content is essential to meeting your audiences' needs and ensuring they return to your site.

Remember that a text is more legible if it is: non-italic and against a background which is in strong contrast to the type.

As a general guide, ALL websites, including staff-facing sites and those associated with publicity campaigns or other initiatives should use the nnc.gov.ph web address and contain:an NNC logo; full contact details with social media links; a clear statement of the purpose of the site and an outline of the information and services it provides.

Use the acronym NNCRVII in all circumstances. If mentioned for the first time in the article or letter uses this format:National Nutrition Council Region VII (NNCRVII)National Nutrition Council Region VII (NNCRVII) for black ink only

In promotional and general reference materials incorporate this facebook..com/nncrvii

Do not use large blocks of italic or all-caps text, as it is difficult to read.ALL CAPS is okay for very short headlines only.Avoid all-caps text on the body of written communications; it’s like shouting at your audience.Avoid underlined text online - it can easily be confused with a link.Never use flashing or scrolling text as it contradicts our communication principles and may not be visible to those with older technology.
