It’s hard to believe that 2008 is in the

books and 2009 is open and ready for

for our club. We did a lot of rides,

hosted a successful MITM, held some

fun events and even got in a couple of

Your MINI club this year did a total of 15

club rides and held or participated in 15

If you look we only missed November (I

include MITM for August) which isn’t

And our events in 2008:

Remember you need to add in the na-

OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE MOTORING SOCIETY OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION January 2009

MINI5280 CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHARITY RUN

MINI5280, for the fifth year run-

ning, challenged it’s members to

gather toys for the children

seeking treatment at Denver’s

Children’s Hospital. This is an

important event for our club and

as always was well attended.

This year 20 MINIs participated

as well as one Cadillac Escalade

from two converging group stag-

ing areas.

The Northern Group began their

drive from the Children’s Hospital in

Bloomfield. Acting on a tip from

Homeland Security about terrorists

in MINIs, the security guard at the

Bloomfield hospital attempted to

chase our northern brethren from

the parking lot just as they were

about to leave anyway. Good job.

The Southern Group, which was obvi-

ously less dangerous in appearance ,

gathered without harassment and de-

parted at exactly 11:30 AM. Arriving in

near synchronous harmony at straight-

up noon, both groups filled the no

parking lane at the hospital and de-

MINI’d into the brisk 10 degree sun-

shine. The first order of business was

to unload the toys.

Nearly 22 wagon loads of toys were

wheeled into the lobby of the newly con-

structed hospital. After check-in we gath-

ered in the warming sun and listen while

Jonathan spoke about his personal con-

nection to Children’s Hospital and why

this event is important to him. Then we

held a raffle for a set of steel wheels and

a $300 gift certificate to Discount Tires.

Page 3

OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE MOTORING SOCIETY OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION January 2009

The raffle collected $345 so MINI5280 added $55 to the

pot and gave a total of $400 to the hospital in the form of

a check.

The toys were then hauled into the inner recesses of the

hospital toy stock pile for later distribution to needy fami-

lies and sick kids. Following this the club

members were invited to tour the hospital.

We toured the teen lounge with theater,

pool table and video games, saw the little

tikes play area as well as outdoor area. We

were shown the Hospital’s history in picto-

rial displays and witnessed the tools of the

trade circa 1880. In the main foyer we had

the opportunity to see the entries in the

gingerbread house contest and marveled at

the beautiful art work and designs that

lined the many walls and floors.

Finally we thanked our host and vowed to return again

next year. As we left each one of us felt the holiday

spirit and hoped for a speedy recovery for each of the

children being healed by the fine staff at Children’s

Hospital.

Favorite MINI Memory Denver to Dragon Caravan + MOTD-5 2007

My History with the MINI

Spring time 2004, a 3 person Partnership from Denver wanted us to adapt my son Brian’s Laminova Modular Intercooling System to an R53 MINI Cooper. We were given a MINI to work with for a couple months. By mid June we had designed, built & installed 2 Prototype Units. Plus we had fallen hopelessly in love w/ the MINI Cooper.

The 1st prototype went on an Electric Blue test car belonging to 1 of 3 partners, named Richard. The 2nd went on a MINI owned by a 16 yr old young man, named Christian. Both cars were taken to the 2004 East Meets West in Rockford, IL.

We sold them exclusive rights for 1 year to the MINI Cooper R53 market. After 1½ years, they had only taken 18 of necessary 100 units per year to remain exclusive. At this point we wanted to sell additional Intercoolers we had on our inventory shelf & to do so, we went out & bought “Panther”. Next I joined NAM & MINI5280.org to reach our intended market. I took on my screen name, “intercoolest” in an effort to be quickly identified w/ any potential customers.

I attended 2 MINI5280 club meeting prior to my son & I going to MOTD-5 in 2007. We took along an Intercooler in a box to show during the 5 day event. There we met w/most of the NAM Vendors. Two men, Jan from Revolution Mini Works & his friend Eric w/Helix met w/us. They said they actually remembered the prototype units from Rockford, IL. from June 2004 & had wondered what ever happened to it.

MITM-2 in August 2007 we showed the Intercooler again, but this time it was installed on Panther. Clint Cope from Mountain View, CA. purchased one. He has since formed a Company known on NAM as Defenders of Speed (DoS).

Attending many MINI5280 events & 4 National events over the past 2 years has altered my attentive focus from Intercooler – HP performance mods to mainly participating in group motoring events. I have lead the Castle to Castle trip in July as well as couple other small outings w/ just a few MINI’s.

RMW & DoS are pushing the product for us now & I get to play. My son recently purchased his own MINI, GP #1650. We are hop-ing to do many club events in coming months & years. Brian’s screen name is Bgdmax & is also currently signed up for the Mt. Rushmore event in May.

What is a Dynomometer (Dyno)? Wikipedia:

A dynamometer can also be used to determine the torque and power required to operate a driven machine such as a

pump. In that case, a motoring or driving dynamometer is used. A dynamometer that is designed to be driven is called

an absorption or passive Dynamometer. A dynamometer that can either drive or absorb is called a universal or active

dynamometer.

MINIS GO TO YELLOWSTONE It has been a while since I’ve toured Yellowstone.

Many of you have indicated that you have never

been to our nation’s first national park. To rectify

both situations MINI5280 is planning a ride to Yel-

lowstone.

We will leave Denver on Friday morning June 5th

and drive to Cody, WY via some really swell

twisty, lonely roads. After bunking for the night in

Cody we will hit the park and do a figure eight on

the loop roads before heading back to Cody for

the night. This is only about 300 miles but with

lots of photo opportunities it will take us all day.

Some may want to spend the night in the park ei-

ther camping or in one of the lodges. My advise is

to book early.

The next day we will skirt the southern edge of

the park and travel to Jackson Hole. There are

some nice scenic roads between Cody and Jackson

but we should arrive early enough to do some

window shopping and perhaps drink an adult bev-

erage or two. A few folks are planning on heading

north out of the park and go to Glacier park in

Montana.

Finally on Monday morning we will leave Jackson

and drive back to Denver via Flaming Gorge Reser-

voir and Craig Colorado. This should be a fun re-

laxing drive with nice roads and excellent scenery.

So join us if you can and learn more on our NAM

MINI5280 TAILGATE PARTY - GO BRONCOS

An urgent call was received by your president on the night

of December 6th. It was Mike Shanahan and he said

“Maybee” - he always calls me Maybee (must be a football

thing) - “as you know we are about to play

KC tomorrow and I need your help.” Of

course I said “Sure Coach, anything for the

head dude of the Broncos, even though it

is near midnight and I was in bed dreaming

of MINIs”. Coach Shanahan then asked me

to hold a MINI5280 tailgate party to in-

crease the fan spirit and thereby increase

the chances of a Bronco win. How could I tell him that this

event was already planned weeks ago and that his urging

was not the impetus for our fling. “You got it Coach” was all

I could muster and after thanks and how’s the family and

the MINI, I ended the conversation with a good luck and go

Broncos.

It was a sunny Sunday on December 7th when nine MINIs,

complete with cooking supplies, food and beverages gath-

ered on the upper-

deck of the RTD park-

ing structure at Dry

Creek Station. Jona-

than brought the grill and a great tasting brisket and

MINI5280 provided bratwursts. We talked of rides past,

ride planned and rides we’d like to do. Of course we

looked at each other’s mods and were

given an impromptu class in inter cooling

technology by Mike Gleason.

The food was good, the sun was awesome

and even the adult beverages were cold

and crisp. Later that day Coach Shanahan

called again to thank me and MINI5280

for helping the Broncos achieve their victory over the

Chiefs and to hope our club would make this a ongoing

tradition.

I have a new 2008 Clubman with only 67 miles that I need to sell.

Asking price is $24,500, payoff is $28,000.

The car has only been driven to get washed! I purchased the car from

Desert Mini in Vegas and had it shipped here (Colorado Springs) in an enclosed trailer. Being that it takes 4-6 months to order this car from the factory, I thought I should have been able to sell this sooner for more than what I'm now asking, but has not been the case. I bought the car as an incentive to purchase a townhome that I am selling. 3 months later, I still have both. MOTIVATED -

The car was ordered with the factory Limited Slip Differential, the Sport suspen-

sion, Multi-Function Steering Wheel in leather, Lounge Leather interior option,

Anthracite headliner, Piano Black dash, and Rooster Red dash line. The car is

Chile Red with a Black Roof. I have the stock suspension which is included with

the car. I also have the stock intake and downpipe, and the intake includes an Alta foam filter element.

I am the owner of Webb Motorsports, and I love these cars. This car is totally set up, waxed over and over, not a ding

on it, and I have changed the oil at 5000 mile increments with Redline and bled the entire brake system twice with Mo-

tul. The car currently has 14,750 miles. It gets 32 MPG on average with both highway and city driving. It has never been

in an accident.

I have dyno sheets for the car, weight sheet (it was built with light weight in mind - no sunroof or Xenon lights), original

window sticker, and full alignment specs. The picture does not show the car in its current state with the VS black out

bits.

Please email for quickest response - I doubt this will last long. The price is $28,000 OBO [email protected]

Jean Allais (NAM: eeyore) has published a cookbook full of fun recipes,

witty humor and over 80 photographs of MINIs.

If you can cook, know someone who can, can correctly identify a stove

from a microwave or can spell meringue – this book is for you.

Given my “if it don’t come in a can, it don’t go in this man” philosophy

of culinary arts, even I have found the recipes easy to follow with su-

perb results. For example my favorite on page 30:

Single Malt Highland Scotch

Ingredients:

1 Bottle Single Malt Highland Scotch

Directions:

Open bottle of Single Malt Highland Scotch.

Pour 4 to 6 ounces in a glass.

Drink. Ice is sometimes added to this recipe.
