BALL BRIEFS250 GAMES FOR ORMOND GREATToday Bruce Bourne plays his 250th senio r

came for Ormond, in what can only bedescribed as a magnificent career of amateurfootball . Bruce also created a new record ofsenior games for the Ormond club on 5thJune .

It is most fitting that Bruce should createthese milestones of his career, in this the 50thyear of the Club . He has been the most out-standing player in the club's history and nodoubt the most successful . Bruce's record ismore outstanding when you consider all his250 games have been in the first eighteen, never once having been relegated to thereserves . In his early years of his seniorcareer, repelled a number of offers to playleague football, instead he became a very, levoted amateur footballer . ~

Bruce's record of achievements as anamateur footballer have been remarkable andin summary are ; two Ormond Under 19 Best& Fairests, two Ormond senior Best & Fairests, best First Year Player in 1969, three timesrunner up in Best & Fairest, twice third Bestk Fairest and twice fourth .

From 1967 to 1981 he has featured in Best& Fairest awards at Ormond in eleven our offifteen years . He captained Ormond for fourvears from 1975 to 1978 . His success inAmateur circles has been magnificent, havingrepresented Victoria on sixteen occasions .and was selected captain of Victoria for fourconsecutive years from 1972 to 1975 . He wonthe A grade Best and Fairest in 1974 and waschosen in the All Australian Amateur side onthree occasions .

Bruce's most successful year was in 1974when he won the club's Best and Fairest, theA Grade Best and Fairest, was captain ofVictoria and Vice-Captain of the All Australianside in the A .N .F.C . Carnival that year.

Bruce's contribution to the club has notonly been as a player, he has also served onCommittee, Social Committee, SelectionCommittee and has assisted many youngplayers in their football development, for allthis Bruce was awarded Life Member ofOrmond in 1978 . He is presently secretary ofthe Ormond Life Members Association .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1982

Bruce is still killing them in A Gradeplaying inspiring football at centre half backand we at Ormond are confident that he willcontinue to serve the club as a great player ashe seeks to make 3(H) games his next target .We at Ormond have a lot to thank the Bournefamily for their service and support . Bruce'smother, Gwen, has given long service assecretary of our ladies committee for whichshe was recognised with a Certificate of Merit .His father . Ken, served as a committeemanfor a number of years and Bruce is ablysupported by his wife Lynette and childrenKerrie-Ann and Andrew.

Congratulations Bruce and thanks for allthe pleasure you have given all Ormond andamateur football supporters .

150 GAMES FOR ORMOND'SIAN KOZLOWSK I

Today another Ormond player will createa milestone, when Ian (Wally) Kozlowskiplays his 150th game . Ian has been a niagnifi-cent player and clubman at Ormond anddespite suffering several serious leg injuries, causing him to miss some 80 games sincebeing a senior player, he has achieved 150games . Testimony of Ian's fighting spirit andlove for his club .

As was the case with Bruce Bou rne, Ianwas recruited from Huntingdale High School,a very lucrative source of very good playersfor Ormond in the late sixties early seventies .Ian won the Under 17 Best & Fairest in hisfirst two years at Ormond and he played inthe A Grade premiership sides of 1972 and1973. Over the last few years, Ian has been aninspiring player with the reserves, beingcaptain for a number of years .

Ian was awarded Life Membership of theclub in 1979 at that time being the youngestto do so . He, like many Ormond players overthe years, has given great service to the clubon off-field activities . A committeeman since1977, Social Secretary and Vice President ofthe club for two years have been Ian'svaluable contributions to the club .

We thank Ian and his lovely wife Carol fortheir great support and hope it will continuefor many years . Congratulations Wally forreaching ISOgames .

150 GAMES TO M .H S .O .B. BACKMAN

The Committee, players, past and presen tand all supporters join together in congra-tulating Robin Martin on reaching the mile-stone of 150 games with M .H .S .O .B .

Robin commenced his career at M .H .S .O .B .in 1973 under the watchful eve of our thenreserves coach, Norm Peading and his talents, even though still a 17 year old attendingMelbourne High School, were very obvious .His high flying ability and skill to mark underpressure are great attributes to a player whoalso possesses natural fitness . His love ofrowing during the summer has also been ofadded value . Robin is also a long accuratekick of the ball . Robin kicked 93 goals in1979 to record his highest senior tally of goalsduring our grand final year .

Robin's progress in senior ranks has seenmany fine dedicated games. and his ability toplay in other positions has been of great valueto M .H .S .O .B .

In 1982, Robin has played the majority ofgames on the back line and excelled in thisposition . Robin's all round talents are a dreamto any coach trying to create winning moves .

Robin has been a long serving committee-man and since 1981 has liaised our homegame entertainment in conjunction with ourhardworking ladies committee . His ability to

6

turn moderate bar sales into a financialsuccess was only a starter and together withhis parents decided to enter the hotelbusiness . Robin's talents in the social areahave been great and many enjoyable BBQ'sand pleasant Sunday mornings have beenenjoyed by all . Robin's popularity at our Cluband at the "Underground" on a Saturdaynight have been an enormous inspirationto al l

Congratulations Robin on this fine achieve-nient and we hope that you are associatedwith our great club for many years into thefuture . It is involvement of fine players andgreat clubmen like yourself that enableAmateur football clubs to succeed and strivefor new goals .

50 GAMES AT NORTH

Last week against Marcellin O .C ., SteveO'Rourke played his 50th game for NorthOld Boys. Steve began in 1977 with the U/19'sthe unfortunately missed the next two yearsbecame of knee problems . Since returning in1980 he has been a regular in the firsts andhas shown great versatility by playing in anumber of positions around the ground .

His uncanny ability to get foot to ball inthe most difficult of situations is matchedonly by that same ability to get glass to mouthin those crowded watering holes where hetrains so hard .

Congratulations Steve from all at North .

NORTH FIVE MAKE CARNIVAL TEAMEveryone at North Old Boys in thrille d

with the selection of five of our players torepresent Victoria at the Carnival in Perthnext week . For one club to provide 20% ofthe squad is a magnificent achievement andto Geoff, Ga ry, Steve, Paul and Mark go ourcongratulations and best wishes for a suc-cessful trip . We know they will do theirutmost to see that Victoria wins the Carnival .

To lose five key players for the next twomatches will really test the depth of the club .However we are confident that those playerswho have now been given their opportunityin both the firsts and reserves will rise to theoccasion . There will be no excuses made .

BRIEFSBALLCOLLEGIANS CAPTAIN REACHE S

150 GAME SSeveral players of note at Collegians football

club have recently achieved milestones orare about to do so . Without doubt the mostimportant is club captain and Victorianrepresentative Ian Rice who will hopefullyplay his 150th game for the Lions againstMarcellin at Elsternwick Park today .

Of Ricey there need be no glowingcommentary - the facts alone bear witnessto his great ability and mastery over the game .He first played for Collegians in 1973 andmade the transition from school-boy footballat Wesley to aniateur football with ease . Inhis first season he finished 2nd in the clubBest and Fairest Award, as indeed he did inhis second year. On each occasion the thenclub captain and dual 'B Grade' Best andFairest winner Phil Pryor won the award .Ricey turned the tables on Phil the followingyear winning the first of his club B & Fawards. In his 9 years at Collegians Ricey haswon the award 3 times, been runner-up fourtimes and third once . His only "failure" waslast year when he only played a hand-full ofgames due to injury .

Ian has been club Captain from 1975 to thepresent with the exception of 1978 when ChrisRoach was captain-coach . He has representedVictoria in State games on no fewer than 10occasions between 1975 and 1980, beingappointed Captain of the State in 1977 andVice-captain in 1980 . He was also chosen inthe Victorian Carnival sides of 1976 and 1979 .

Despite his many decorations Riceyconsiders his finest moment in football to belast years' Preliminary Final victory overIvanhoe to ensure Collegians return to AGrade. He has every right to be proud of thatmoment because without him Collegianscould not have hoped to avoid relegation toCGrade inthemid '70's . Without himCollegians'would not be in A Grade today .

Well done Ricey . All Collegians applaudyou on playing your 150th game and lookforward to yet another display of vintageRice-power against Marcellin, not to mentiona further 50 of the same : Andrea, hamstringsand old age permitting .

Speaking of old age, another Collegiansstalwart, Mark James played his 100th gamefor the club when he took the field for the3rds last Saturdav. "Third Man" joined th e

Lions in 1969, almost unbelievably as awingman, and played two seasons in thatposition before being shifted to the back-pocket in the senior side, then in A Grade .After a fine season in 1971 in which Markwas runner-up for the club Best and Fairesthis promising career was interrupted by a jobtransfer to Sydney.

Mark returned to the "Harry Trott" in 1974but by that stage too much of the good lifehad taken its toll on his formerly svelte figure .Nevertheless he had lost none of his pace andregained a regular position in the senior sideas a back pocket or half-back-flanker.Diminishing pace became an ever-increasingproblem (as did Mark's girth!) but even aslate as 1978 he was still playing occasionalgames in the Firsts . In 1980 he becamecaptain of the Reserves and is now vice-captain of the thirds .

Mark's great service to the club on theplaying field has been matched by years ofservice on the committee and in earlier yearsas bar-manager . Thanks very much for allyour hard work "Third Man"! We at Collegianshope you get your last wish and kick a thirdand no doubt final goal before finally hangingup your boots (and at the rate you score thatshould be about 1985!) .

David "Emu" Hoyle, Collegians deputyVice-captain played his 50th game last Saturdayagainst Old Xaverians . Sadly it was not a

BALL BRIEFSgood day for Collegians or David but it didnevertheless represent an improvement onDave's 49th game in which he managed tocripple himself even before the first bounceby twisting his ankle in a tap hole during thewarm-up lap !

Dave joined Collegians in 1980, fresh fromgreat success as full-forward of the WesleyA .P.S . Premiership side . He tried out brieflywith Richmond U/19's but found thestrenuous summer training not to his liking .Despite excellent practice match form withRichmond, Dave signed with the Lions intime for the start of the 1980 V .A .F.A . season .

In his 21/2 years with Collegians he hasmissed only 2 senior games, has kicked 72goals, principally from the 'Best First YearPlayer' in 1980, 'Best Finals Player' in 1981and has been a key figure in Collegiansresurgence in recent years .

Dave's primary object in football seems tobe to disprove the old adage 'You only playas well as you train' . If it were true Davewould surely be a regular thirds player, being"the most unfit 19 year old" ever seen bycoach Ferg . He is notorious for missingtraining if humanly possible, for arrangingtennis or other commitments to coincide withsummer training and for lingering in the club-rooms, particularly on cold nights beforetraining to survey himself at length in theseveral mirrors kindly donated to the club byhis father !

Congratulations Hoyles, "Third Man" andRicey .

FIFTY TO OLD MENTONIA NAll at Old Mentonians would like to congra-

tulate Ron "Spider" Purcell on reaching the50th game target . "Spider" has played mostof those games in the firsts and judging byehe good form he has displayed this year willcontinue to do so . Opposition ruckmen needno introduction to Ron as he successfullydemoralises them by his ungainly long reach .Also Ron contributes off the field by beingan excellent clubman . The committee andplayers wish you all the best in your next fifty- good luck "Spider" .

150 UP AT BULLEEN-TEMPLESTOWETony D'agostino reached another mileston e

last week against Monash Blues, playing inhis 150th game for the Bullants . "Dagga"started his career with the Juniors and hasworked his way through the Under 19's to thesenior ranks . Due to his enthusiasm, skill anddesperation, the club has enjoyed greatsuccess both on and off the field . With apersonal contribution typical of °Daggas"supreme efforts, whether playing football orcommittee involvement, Tony's friendlynature has given him many mates on and offthe field . Well done "Dagga" and everyone atB .T .A .F.C . wishes you the very best and ahappy future with your new wife Jenny.Congratulations and good luck .

50 GAMES AT A .N .Z .

All at A.N .Z . congratulate Daryl O'Breeon reaching his 50th game today . Daryl hasbeen a consistent senior player over the yearsand supports the club keenly and is presentlya very popular players representative on tehcommittee .
