The Bear Down TraditionArizona’s most memorable athletic tradition is the slogan “Bear Down,” given to Wildcat teams by John “Button” Salmon, student body president and varsity athlete, shortly before he died in 1926 following an auto accident. Button Salmon’s last message to his teammates, spoken to J.F. “Pop” McKale, coach and athletic director, was, “Tell them... tell the team to bear down.” The rally cry predates “Win One for the Gipper” by two years.

2014 Arizona Football Game Notes

“Tell them... tell the team to bear down.” — John Byrd “Button” Salmon, 1926 3

Some Game Themes: As the calendar turns, the Thursday night spotlight shines bright on a Pac-12 interdivision matchup of undefeated teams … The second-ranked Oregon Ducks own the league’s signature win to date, something the Wildcats would like to add to their early-season résumé … It was last November when Arizona stunned many and ruined Oregon’s Rose Bowl hopes with a rout in Tucson … That leaves the Ducks seeking payback while boosting the confidence of the Cats … Indeed, it should be viewed as an all-pleasure, no-pressure opportunity for the visitors from the Southern Division … After all, the Wildcats are young offensively at the skill positions led by redshirt freshman Anu Solomon. The rookie has made headlines early this season, and his poise is a strong suit that will be tested to the extreme in a hostile environment … Arizona has yet to play a truly complete game this season. To do so, it will need to shore up some vulnerabilities on defense and find a way to make some plays on spe-cial teams … Oregon may be saying the same, especially considering it has yielded some yards to opponents this season, especially through the air. However, the Ducks are an opportunistic bunch that thrive on forcing turnovers and letting the offense cash in on the scoreboard … Marcus Mariota is a Heisman front-runner completing an astonishing 74-percent of his passes without an interception, plus he’s the sec-ond-leading rusher for the Ducks. He spreads the ball around to a handful of explosive receivers and has a set of backs that are explosive runners and dangerous weapons in the passing game, too … It will be a stiff challenge for the Wildcats defensively, but sophomore Scooby Wright leads a hungry unit that must play disciplined and tackle well in space. Limiting big plays and forcing Oregon to drive the ball is always a pre-mium … One area has been particularly decisive in the last two meetings between these teams: red zone efficiency. Keep an eye on that stat … The winner advances unbeaten for a showdown with a Southern California school next week, while the loser will have an extra day or two to lick its wounds and regroup for a pivotal stretch of October games.

Last Week: Arizona enjoyed its first bye week of the season, which came at a perfect time to allow the emotional high of a last-second Hail Mary win over California ease away before turning attention to the Ducks. Looking back on the 49-45 comeback vic-tory over the Golden Bears on Sept. 20, the only place to start is at the beginning. Cal jumped out to an early 7-0 lead some 43 seconds into the contest, and Arizona never tied or had a lead the rest of the way (until time expired in the fourth quarter). The Wildcats were down 28-6 at halftime – a 22-point margin which had never before been overcome in program history. Jared Goff and the Cal offense seemed unstoppable, while Anu Solomon and Arizona appeared punchless. But football is a funny game – a 60-minute game – and what transpired in the fourth quarter will never be forgotten in Tucson (or Berkeley, for that matter). Trailing 31-13 entering the fourth quarter, a relatively harmless 31-yard field goal by Casey Skowron brought the Cats within two possessions with 14:46 on the clock. On the ensuing possession, a Goff pass took a fortuitous bounce into the hands of UA’s Tra’Mayne Bondurant, and two plays later the Wildcats scored on a nine-yard Solomon pass to Austin Hill, cutting the deficit to 31-23 and providing a glimmer of hope to the Arizona Stadium crowd. But the Golden Bears sent many who had stuck around to the exits when Khalfani Muhammad broke off a 50-yard run to extend the lead to 38-23. Still with over 10 minutes to play, Arizona fought back to within a possession on Solomon’s 16-yard pass to Cayleb Jones, mak-ing it 38-30 with 8:09 left. Then Cal answered on a 75-yard drive, capped by Muham-mad’s 6-yard run, and it was again a 15-point margin with 5:21 on the clock. There was no quit in the Cats. Terris Jones-Grigsby scored on a 6-yard run, finishing off a quick 75-yard drive with 3:30 remaining. Arizona went for an onside kick, and it was recov-ered by Bondurant. Four plays later, Solomon hit Jones for a 15-yard touchdown pass, but the two-point try failed with the Cats down 45-43 and 2:44 remaining. The next onside kick try didn’t work out, Cal recovered and seemed to have the game in hand. But Arizona forced a field goal try with under a minute to goal, which sailed wide left. The Cats took over at their own 30-yardline with 52 seconds left and no timeouts. The first few plays sputtered, especially after a long completion to Jones was nullified by offensive pass interference. Faced with fourth-and-seven, Solomon hit Hill for a 20-yard completion to move the ball across midfield. With time ticking away, the Cats spiked the ball with four seconds on the clock. The final play saw Solomon heave a ball to the back right corner of the endzone, where Hill hauled in the pass to complete the most improbable comeback in school history. The play quickly was dubbed the “Hill Mary” for Hill’s heroics, but it was exhibit A that football is a 60-minute game. On that night, 60 Minutes of Arizona brought on a new meaning as the only lead of the game was at the final horn. Wow.

36 Points in Perspective: Obviously 36 points in a single quarter is noteworthy, but in the bigger picture it’s particularly noteworthy at this point of the season. Consider that after games were complete on Sept. 27, there are still 25 FBS teams that have not scored 36 points in any single GAME this season. The 36 points were also more than 69 FBS teams scored in their games played on Sept. 20, the day the Wildcats stunned the Golden Bears.

2014 Arizona Football Game Notes

4 2014 Arizona Football • Game 5 at Oregon

The Last Meeting: Arizona gave fifth-ranked Oregon a dose of its own medicine as it routed the Ducks on a wet and cold day at Arizona Stadium. Junior Ka’Deem Carey ran for 206 yards and scored a touchdown in each quarter as he surpassed Trung Canidate to become the school’s all-time rushing leader. The Wildcats’ 18 seniors weren’t about to let their final crack at Oregon slip away. Senior CB Shaquille Richardson made the defensive play of the year on the first play of the game, which seemed to foreshadow the events of the next three hours. UO’s Marcus Mariota entered as a Heisman Trophy candidate and had not thrown an interception all season (or in 353 pass attempts), but his quick pass to the sideline glanced off the hands of Bralon Addision in front of the UA bench. In coverage, Richardson dove over the sideline, corralled the ball and slung it back inbounds to Scooby Wright, who intercepted it and returned it 13 yards. Arizo-na’s offense took over from there, scoring on its first three possessions. Carey capped the opening drive with a 6-yard plunge, senior QB B.J. Denker hit Nate Phillips for a 9-yard TD pass on the next drive and later found senior Terrence Miller for a 5-yard score. The Ducks cut and 18-point deficit to 12 points in the second quarter and had an opportunity to get closer before halftime, but Jared Tevis forced a Mariota fumble when the quarterback scrambled on 4th-and-2 near midfield. That gave UA the ball with a minute left, and the Cats needed only 42 seconds before Carey scored a 1-yard touchdown to put the underdogs up 28-9 at intermission. The second half was about ball control, and UA was masterful. Behind a dominating effort by the offensive line, Carey ran a school-record 48 times and Denker added 102 for a 305-yard rushing day which produced a 35:29-24:31 edge in time of possession. Denker was nearly perfect passing, too, completing 19-of-22 attempts for 178 yards and two scores. Senior Jake Fischer led the defensive effort by tying his career high with 14 tackles, and Richard-son put an exclamation mark on things with his 10th career interception in the fourth quarter as UA held Oregon to its lowest scoring total of the season. Arizona defeated an Associated Press top-5 team for the first time since downing No. 2 Oregon, 34-24, on Nov. 15, 2007, in Tucson. The Wildcats have knocked off a ranked team in nine of the last 10 seasons, including three times under Rich Rodriguez.

A Comeback for the Ages: Arizona’s improbable victory over California on Sept. 20 not only ended on a Hail Mary, it capped the biggest comeback in school history. The Wildcats, who trailed 28-6 at halftime, had never overcome a deficit of more than 21 points, something it had done on three previous occasions (including under Rich Ro-driguez against Nevada at the 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl). In order to complete the comeback, however, Arizona needed to do something else it had never done be-fore: score 36 points in a single quarter. That’s exactly what it did in the fourth quarter, eclipsing a 35-point second quarter against Idaho in a snoozer of a 70-0 rout in 2008. This was far from a snoozer – though many may have already been in bed and missed it. The Wildcats entered the fourth quarter trailing 31-13, yielded 14 more points to the Golden Bears, yet still emerged victorious thanks to the record-setting final quarter of play. In fact, Arizona fell behind 43 seconds into the game and never had the chance to tie or take the lead the rest of the way – until time expired on the Hail Mary heave at the horn.

Against The AP Top 25: Arizona is playing a team ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time this season. All-time, the program is 43-105-1 against ranked op-ponents, including a win in nine of the previous 10 seasons. Those wins include two recent upsets of highly acclaimed Oregon teams, including a 34-24 victory over the second-ranked Ducks on Nov. 15, 2007, at Arizona Stadium and then last year’s 42-16 stunner in the desert on Nov. 23. Dating to 1998, the Wildcats are 3-7 against ranked Oregon teams at the time of the game. Arizona is seeking its first road win against an AP Top 25 since downing then-No. 20 USC, 21-17, at the Coliseum on Dec. 5, 2009. Under Rich Rodriguez, Arizona is 3-7 in all games against ranked opponents, including 0-5 away from home.

Desert Spread: Rich Rodriguez’s offense has churned out yardage in his three seasons in Tucson, and entering this week’s play the Wildcats rank among the nation’s leaders in several categories. Arizona leads all Pac-12 teams and is No. 6 in the FBS with an average of 593.8 total offense yards per games. That has produced 42.0 points per game, a figure that is good enough for No. 16 in the FBS. The Cats are rather balanced, averaging 365.8 passing yards per game (No. 7 in FBS) and 228.0 rushing yards per game (No. 28 in FBS). Individually, redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon ranks No. 3 in FBS with 405.3 total offense yards per game and No. 5 in FBS with 363.5 passing yards per game. Sophomore receiver Cayleb Jones is second nationally with six receiving touchdowns and his 118.8 yards per game rank No. 6 in the FBS. True freshman running back Nick Wilson is averaging 120.5 rushing yards per game, which is good enough for No. 14 in FBS.

2014 Arizona Football Game Notes

“Tell them... tell the team to bear down.” — John Byrd “Button” Salmon, 1926 5

Solomon into the Record Books: Redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon has already set numerous freshman passing records this season, such as becoming the first freshman ever to start a season opener. In that game against UNLV on Aug. 29, Solomon passed for a then-freshman record 425 yards, breaking the previous mark of 418 held by Keith Smith set in 1996. But Solomon went on to set plenty of all-time records school, Pac-12 and even NCAA records in his last outing against California on Sept. 20. Here’s a look:

Pac-12 Records - 566 yards of total offense a new Pac-12 single-game record for any player- 520 pass yards a new single-game record for freshmanNCAA FBS (freshman records)- Most total offense plays – 89. Previous was 80 set by two players.- Most pass attempts – 73. Previous was 72 by Luke McCown.- Ties most pass completions – 47 (Luke McCown, 2000).Arizona School Records (all players)- Pass attempts – 73. Previous was 69 set by Matt Scott, 2012.- Pass completions – 47. Previous was 45 set by Matt Scott, 2012.- Passing yards – 520. Previous was 510 by Willie Tuitama, 2007.- Total offense – 566. Previous was 517 by Willie Tuitama, 2007.- Total offense plays – 89. Previous was 74 by Matt Scott, 2012.

A Near-Perfect Quarter: Quarterback Anu Solomon and the Arizona offense turned in the best quarter of football in school history in the final 15 minutes against California. The Wildcats scored 36 points (most in any quarter in school history) while gaining 279 yards of offense on 31 plays (9.0 yards per play). Much of the damage was done through the air, where Solomon was 19-of-24 passing for 248 yards and four touch-downs. That checks out to a staggering 220.97 pass efficiency rating.

60 Minutes of Arizona: Rich Rodriguez picked up his 20th victory at Arizona against the Golden Bears on Sept. 20, and it took a comeback for the ages to do so. But of his 20 wins with the Wildcats, his squad has trailed at some point in 13 of those contests illustrating that the Wildcats are never going to stop fighting. The four most notable are mentioned above (California this year and Nevada, USC and Oklahoma State in 2012). One of the constants in those games has been explosive fourth quarters. Since 2000, the Wildcats have scored 21 or more fourth-quarter points on seven total oc-casions and three of those occurrences have been in the aforementioned California (36 points), Nevada (21) and Oklahoma State (22) wins under Rodriguez. It truly is 60 minutes of Arizona.

Rodriguez Notches Some Numbers: The memorable victory over California marked a couple of noteworthy milestones for Rich Rodriguez. It was the 140th head coaching win for Rodriguez, who is in his 21st season. The victory also improved him to 20-10 in his three seasons in Tucson, an impressive mark considering he took over a squad that was 4-8 in 2011. It’s also the second-best start to a coaching tenure at Arizona behind only College Football Hall of Famer Jim Young, who was 24-6 after 30 games from 1973-75.

Arizona Football All-Time 4-0 Starts: Arizona has started a season 4-0 on 11 previous occasions dating back over the last 50-some years. While Arizona’s stiffest challenges of the 2014 season remain ahead on the schedule, history indicates the Wildcats could be looking at a successful season the rest of the way. In fact, should UA build on its 4-0 start, history sides even more favorably for the school. The last time the Cats opened a season 5-0 was in 1998, when UA went on to a 12-1 finish. The best start in school history was a 7-0 mark to open the 1993 campaign, when the Cats went 10-2, including a Fiesta Bowl victory over Miami. Here’s a look at UA’s 4-0 starts over the years:

Season Start Pac-10/12 Final W-L Season Start Pac-10/12 Final W-L2014 4-0 1-0 ??? 1983 5-0-1 (4-0 start) 2-0-1 7-3-12010 4-0 1-0 7-6 1975 5-0 9-21998 5-0 2-0 12-1 1974 5-0 9-21994 4-0 2-0 8-4 1973 5-0 8-31993 7-0 4-0 10-2 1968 4-0 8-31986 4-0 1-0 9-3 1961 4-0-1 (1-0 start) 8-1-1

Ball Security and Limiting Negative Plays: For all the big numbers produced by the Arizona offense, it’s the smaller numbers that may matter most, especially this week in a hostile environment. After four games, the Wildcats have turned the ball over just four times, which ranks No. 8 in the FBS for fewest turnovers lost. Meanwhile, Arizona has allowed only 3.75 tackles for loss per game, a number that ranks No. 14 nationally entering this week. Both stats are equally important to helping the Wildcats to a 7.0 yards per play clip that ranks No. 15 nationally.

2014 Arizona Football Game Notes

6 2014 Arizona Football • Game 5 at Oregon

Double-DigitDeficits: Arizona’s 22-point comeback two weeks ago was the largest in school history, but it wasn’t the first time the Wildcats have made a significant come-back under Rich Rodriguez. In fact, four times in the last three seasons Arizona has overcome a double-digit deficit to win again. The previous benchmark was erasing a 21-0 deficit against Nevada on Dec. 15, 2012, at the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. The Wild-cats rallied to win, 49-48, in dramatic fashion with two touchdowns in the final two minutes. Also in that 2012 season, Arizona overcame a 14-0 deficit against Okalahoma State before winning 59-38 and also fought back from a 28-13 hole against USC in an eventual 39-36 win where the Cats had to break up a potential Hail Mary heave from Matt Barkley. Since 2000, Arizona has won a game in which it at some point trailed by 10-plus points on 11 occasions.

Scooby Snacks: Rich Rodriguez demands his players play hungry; perhaps no player plays hungrier than sophomore linebacker Scooby Wright. The Windsor, Calif., native has transitioned to middle linebacker and he is feasting on opponents all over the field. Through four games, Wright has racked up team-highs for tackles (51), tackles for loss (7.0) and sacks (4.0) while forcing a fumble. He leads the Pac-12 and ranks No. 7 in the FBS with 12.8 tackles per game, while his average of 1.0 sacks per game puts him No. 4 in the Pac-12 and No. 12 nationally. Against California on Sept. 20, Wright registered a career-high 18 tackles, including 4.0 for loss and 2.0 sacks. He was in on all three tackles of California’s last drive, which set up a missed field goal try and gave Arizona the ball with a glimmer of hope and 52 seconds left in the game. The 18 stops were the most in a game for a Wildcat since former NFL linebacker Marcus Bell had 20 against Arizona State on Nov. 27, 1999. The 4.0 tackles for loss were the most for any player since Spencer Larsen – a multi-purpose NFL player over five seasons – had 4.5 against USC on Oct. 13, 2007.

Big Play Cayleb: Sophomore receiver Cayleb Jones needed a game to settle in (open-er vs. UNLV), but once he did has emerged as Arizona’s big-play threat in the pass-ing game. Against the Rebels, the Texas transfer recorded only three catches for 30 yards, but since has turned in three-consecutive 100-yard receiving games. The big-gest performance of all was against California on Sept. 20 when Jones had 13 grabs for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Nine of his 13 catches went for a first down or a touchdown, and the three scores tied the school single-game record for receiv-ing touchdowns. Over the last three games, Jones has 26 catches, 445 yards and six touchdowns. Of his 29 grabs this year, 20 have gone for first down or touchdown. For the year, Jones is second in the Pac-12 and sixth in the FBS with 118.8 receiving yards per game, and his six receiving touchdowns are tied for second in the Pac-12 and na-tionally. His younger brother, Isaiah, is having a strong season at East Carolina with 29 catches for 323 yards and three scores.

Streak Snapped: One thing Arizona was unable to do against California: produce a 100-yard rusher. It was a two-fold reason. First, the Golden Bears did a solid job slow-ing down the run, and once the Cats dug a hole, needed to pass their way back into the game. Second, running back Nick Wilson left the game with an undisclosed injury in the second half after gaining 33 yards on 11 carries. Terris Jones-Grigsby relieved him and gained 28 yards on five carries, including a touchdown, but eventually it was quarterback Anu Solomon that was UA’s leading rusher with 46 yards on 16 totes. It snapped a string of 20-straight games with a 100-yard rusher dating to Nov. 10, 2012. That streak happens to tie for the longest for any FBS team since 1996-97, according to data provided by STATS. The last team to not allow a Wildcat to rush for 100 yards was UCLA the week prior on Nov. 3 in Pasadena, Calif. Here’s a look at the five longest streaks for teams with a 100-yard rusher since 1996:

Team Streak Start EndArizona 20 11/10/2012 9/20/2014Nebraska 20 10/9/1999 12/30/2000California 18 9/4/2004 10/8/2005TCU 15 11/20/1999 12/20/2000Oklahoma State 15 9/14/2007 9/27/2008

Red Zone Focus: For all of Arizona’s offensive success this season, it needs to do a better job scoring touchdowns in the red zone. The Wildcats rank No. 37 nationally scoring 88.9 percent of the time in the red zone (16-of-18), but have punched it into the end zone one only nine of those 18 trips, which is a 50 percent clip that ranks No. 100 in the FBS. Conversely, Oregon is behind the Cats in overall red zone percentage (18-of-21, 85.7 percent), but all 18 scores have been touchdowns. That results in a 76.2 percent touchdown conversion rate in the red zone, good enough for No. 19 national-ly. It’s been a key factor in the matchup of these two schools the last two seasons. In 2012, Arizona was 0-for-6 in the redzone, while the Ducks were a perfect 5-for-5. A year ago in Tucson, the Wildcats went a perfect 6-for-6 (all TD), while the Ducks were 3-of-5 (only one TD).

2014 Arizona Football Game Notes

“Tell them... tell the team to bear down.” — John Byrd “Button” Salmon, 1926 7

YPS Navigation: You almost need a GPS system to track some of Arizona’s scoring plays this season. The Wildcats have scored 14 touchdowns through three games, in-cluding nine plays of 22 yards or longer. Those 20 touchdowns add up to 629 yards – or 31.5 yards per score (YPS). Considering Anu Solomon’s 13 passing touchdowns, each has gone for nine yards or longer and adds up to 501 yards – or 38.5 yards per touchdown toss. The 501 passing yards on Solomon’s touchdowns are more than the season passing yardage total for five FBS teams (that have also played four games). Arizona has three scoring plays of 85-plus yards, tying Arkansas and UCLA as the only three FBS teams with three offensive plays of 80-plus yards this season.

That’s a Lot of Snaps: Arizona needed a school-record 106 plays to defeat California on Sept. 20. That tally also set a Pac-12 record, which ended up getting broken a week later by Colorado, who coincidentally lost to California. The Buffaloes ran 110 plays in an overtime loss in Berkeley, which leaves Arizona’s total as the highest in a Pac-12 regulation game. The Wildcats’ previous school record for plays in a game was 103 in an overtime loss at Stanford in 2012.

AFixforSix: Arizona seeks its sixth-straight win dating back to last season’s victory over Boston College at the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La., on Dec. 31, 2013. The current five-game streak is modest, but actually stands tied for the eighth-longest among FBS teams. Should the Wildcats find a way to extend the streak to six games, it will mark the longest win streak under Rich Rodriguez. Arizona’s current five-game streak is its first since it won five games in a row since closing 2011 with two victories, then opening the Rodriguez era with three-straight wins in September of 2012. The Wildcats have not won six-consecutive games since winning the final seven of the 12-1 campaign in 1998.

Fabulous Freshmen: Anu Solomon and Nick Wilson form one of the most dynamic freshman duos in the country. Solomon ranks No. 10 among all FBS quarterbacks with 1,454passing yards, a total that leads all freshman passers. Meanwhile, Wilson checks in No. 22 nationally with 482 rushing yards – the third-best mark for freshman rushers. The rookie tandem accounts for 2,103 yards of total offense. That tally would rank No. 33 nationally for all FBS teams. Continued development and health would mean the Wildcat offense is in good shape for the next couple years, too, if you care to project.

OtherFreshmenBackfields:To date, Arizona’s backfield tandem of Anu Solomon and Nick Wilson is the most productive freshman QB-RB combo in the nation. But there are a few other programs that are known to have started a freshman at quarterback and a freshman at running back this season, with a few more likely to join the ranks in the coming weeks. Here’s a look at some schools who have confirmed freshmen backfields:

School Quarterback Running Back Arizona Anu Solomon (redshirt) Nick Wilson (true)FIU Alex McGough (true) Alex Gardner (true)North Texas Dajon Williams (redshirt) Jeffrey Williams (true)Troy Brandon Silvers (redshirt) Josh Anderson (redshirt)Tulane Tanner Lee (redshirt) Sherman Badie (redshirt)

Checks and Balance: In Rich Rodriguez’s offense, the quarterback must make a deci-sion on every snap. Sometimes it’s whether to hand off or keep the ball, other times it’s the decision to run or pass. Either way, Arizona’s offense is producing balanced re-sults through four games. The Wildcats are gaining 228.0 rushing yards per game and 365.8 passing yards per game for a total of 593.8 per game (No. 6 in FBS). Arizona is one of five FBS to average at least 225 rushing yards and 300 passing yards per game, joining the likes of Oregon, Alabama, Marshall and Baylor.

Quick Nick: True freshman running back Nick Wilson is off to a sizzling start with a trio of 100-yard rushing performances in the first four games of his career. In his debut, Wilson ran just seven times, but racked up 104 yards highlighted by an 85-yard touch-down burst that ranks fifth-longest in school history. A week later, the Fresno, Calif., native exploded for 174 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown to help lead the Wildcats to a 26-23 win at UTSA. That performance ranks as fourth-highest single-game rushing total for an Arizona freshman (a look at the top-five is below). Then another week later, in his first home start, Wilson racked up 171 yards on 29 carries with two touchdowns. His season numbers stand at 482 rushing yards on 77 attempts and four scores. Here’s a look at where his top performances work for all-time UA freshman runners.

2014 Arizona Football Game Notes

8 2014 Arizona Football • Game 5 at Oregon

In the Trenches: For all of Arizona’s youth on offense, the Wildcats do have some experience along the offense led by fifth-year senior tackles Mickey Baucus and Fabbians Ebbele. The two bookends have combined for 83 starts, led by Baucus’ 42 which is a team-high at any posi-tion. Senior center Steven Gurrola (18 starts) and junior guard Cayman Bundage (17) add 35 more starts to the front-line experience. Lene Maiava (5) and Jacob Alsadek (1) have split time at the other guard spot this season, rounding out the offensive front that, in total, has 124 career starts to its credit.

Austin Ascending the Charts: Senior wide receiver Austin Hill is moving up the list on several Arizona receiving charts. In his career, Hill has 117 receptions for 1,938 yards and 16 touchdowns. In terms of yards, Hill has etched himself into the No. 8 spot in program history, just behind Richard Dice (1,957 yards, 1993-96). On the touchdowns list, Hill ranks tied for No. 8 with Jon Horton (1983-86) and Rob Gronkowski (2007-08) and is one behind Dice’s mark of 17. A native of Corona, Calif., Hill is two receptions shy of matching Richard Dice’s (1993-96) 119 receptions for 10th-most in school history. Additionally, Hill has a reception in 21-consecutive games played, including two or more over the last 19-straight contests.

More Streaking: As a team, Arizona has rushed for 100-plus yards in 26-consecutive games dating back to Sept. 22, 2012 (at Oregon). In fact, that loss at Oregon is the only game in the Rich Rodriguez era in which the Wildcats have failed to reach the century mark in rushing yards. Otherwise, UA is 20-9 in the other 29 games under Rodriguez. The current 26-game streak is the longest for the school since joining the Pac-10/12 in 1978.

Outta This League: In two-plus seasons at Arizona, Rich Rodriguez is a perfect 11-0 against non-conference opponents. That includes two victories over each of the three non-conference teams on the slate this season. The Wildcats have defeated UNLV by identical 58-13 margins in each of the last two years, and downed UTSA 26-23 after winning 38-13 in Tucson last season. The third opponent the Cats faced this season was Nevada, which Arizona rallied to upend, 49-48, at the 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl and then dispatched last week in Tucson with a 35-28 win.

Tevis a Tucson Talent: Another overlooked star of the Arizona defense is senior safety Jared Tevis. A former walk-on from Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Tevis is known as one of the hardest hitters in the country despite his smaller stature (5-foot-11, 202 pounds). In four games this season, Tevis is second on the squad with 37 tackles, a 9.3 stops per game clip that puts him sixth in the Pac-12 and No. 48 nationally. In his career, Tevis has started 26 games and racked up 208 tackles, along with seven forced fumbles and three interceptions. He’s been named a semifinalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, College Football’s Premiere Scholar-Athlete Award. A former walk-on and Tucson native, Tevis earned his undergraduate degree in finance in May 2014 with a cumulative GPA of 3.28. He started graduate classes in business at Arizona’s esteemed Eller College of Management this fall. He’s a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic First-Team honoree with the potential to earn a third award during the 2014 season, and is a member of the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Bednarik Award Watch Lists this season.

Arizona Fast: As the YouTube video released this summer by UA’s video department suggests, the Wildcats like to play as fast as they can. The Wildcats wasted no time proving that two weeks ago against UNLV en route to a school record 787 yards on 94 plays, which were more offensive snaps than in any game a season ago. If you blinked, you might have missed some highlights. Arizona had touchdown drives of 38 seconds, 40 seconds, 14 seconds and 13 seconds. Arizona kept its foot on the gas pedal the next week, striking for an 85-yard Anu Solo-mon touchdown pass to Cayleb Jones to put the Wildcats on the board some 18 seconds into the game at UTSA. As Rich Rodriguez says, you won’t see the Wildcats standing in a huddle “holding hands and singing kumbaya”.

AFixForSix(Hundred):The Wildcats have accumulated 600 yards of total offense on only nine occasions in program history, but it’s a feat that is becoming more common under Rich Rodriguez. That’s because Rodriguez’s teams have already done it six times in two-plus seasons, and those six performances are all in the top-seven in the single-game record book, paced by the remarkable 787-yard effort in the season-opener against UNLV. Here are the 600-yard games of the last couple seasons:

Opponent Date Total Yards Rush Yards Pass Yards Plays UNLV 8/29/14 787 371 434 94 S. Carolina St. 9/15/12 689 366 323 102 Colorado 10/26/13 670 404 265 82 California 9/20/14 627 107 520 105 Toledo 9/1/12 624 237 387 80 Stanford 10/6/12 617 126 491 103

Where it Ranks: Arizona’s 787 yards of total offense against UNLV on Aug. 29 shattered the old school record of 691 yards set against New Mexico State set back in 1969. Indeed, the Wildcats had never eclipsed the 700-yard mark, but now have one of the highest single-game outputs of any Pac-12 school. In fact, the only program with more than 787 yards in a game is USC, which set its school record of 978 yards against Pamona in 1925.

Where in the World? The Arizona football roster includes players from 19 states and others from South Africa, American Samoa and Mexi-co. From the Pac-12 footprint, the Wildcats have players from Arizona, Washington, Oregon, California and Colorado, while excluding only Utah. Elsewhere around the U.S., Arizona players hail from Texas, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Ohio, North Carolina, Wisconsin, New York, Georgia, Hawaii, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The message from Coach Rodriguez and Co. is clear: no matter where you’re from, if you love playing football, you can come to Arizona.

Weekly Honors: For his efforts against California, receiver Cayleb Jones (13 catches, 186 yards, 3 TD) was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 22. It was the first such honor for Jones, a transfer from Texas, and the first for a Wildcat this season. Anu Solomon was named the Athlon Sports Pac-12 Player of the Week and a Manning Award Star of the Week after his school-record performance that included 520 yards, 47 completions and 73 passing attempts. He was also named the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl Pac-12 Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The Graduates: Five of Arizona’s starters have already earned their degrees from the school. Bookend tackles Mickey Baucus (economy and industry) and Fabbians Ebbele (economy and industry) have combined for 77 career starts on the offensive line and each has a degree in hand. On the defensive side of the ball, lineman Dan Pettinato (sports and society) and defensive backs Jared Tevis (finance) and Jonathan McKnight (social behavior and human understanding) have also earned their degrees.

UpNext:Arizona returns home to host No. 16 USC in a Pac-12 South Division showdown at Arizona Stadium on Oct. 11. The Family Weekend contest will kick off at 7:30 p.m. (MST) with a live television broadcast on ESPN2. Thereafter, Arizona has its last bye weekend of the season before hitting the road for two games at Washington State (Oct. 25) and at UCLA (Nov. 1).

Arizona Notebook

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- The goal posts lying flat on the field, Arizona’s fans lingered on the field, congregating around the locker room entrance nearly 30 minutes after rushing out of the stands.

For Oregon, it was a crushing blow, to its national title hopes and maybe its BCS bowl chances, too.

Ka’Deem Carey ran for 206 yards and four touchdowns while becoming Arizona’s all-time leading rusher, and the Wildcats pulled off a monumental upset by taking advantage of numerous Oregon miscues, shocking the fifth-ranked Ducks 42-16 on Saturday.

Arizona was coming off consecutive home losses, the most disappointing last week’s toe-stubbing against Washington State.

Oregon had raced through most of its schedule, a loss to Stanford putting a dent in its national championship hopes, but a Rose Bowl bid still on the table.

The Wildcats (7-4, 4-4 Pac-12) turned the tables on the fast-paced Ducks, eschewing the normal slow-it-down routine most teams play against them by keeping their foot on the throttle.

With Carey bursting through the line to punish defenders and B.J. Denker dinking and dashing with a variety of fakes, the Wildcats jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and kept going for their first win over a top-five team since knocking off No. 2 Oregon in 2007.

Oregon (9-2, 6-2) gave the Wildcats plenty of help with three turnovers and turning it over twice more on downs to end its national title hopes and, possibly, its four-year run of BCS bowls.

Carey was the workhorse for Arizona as he has been all season, carrying a school-record 48 times while scoring on runs of 6, 1, 9 and 2 yards to break Art Luppino’s career record of 48 total touchdowns set from 1953-56. Carey also reached 3,913 career yards rushing, breaking the mark of 3,824 set by Trung Canidate from 1996-99.

Denker threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 102 more and Arizona had 304 yards rushing, a season-high against Oregon.

The normally high-flying Ducks couldn’t keep up in the Wildcats’ final home game of the season.

Oregon sputtered most of the day, showing only flashes of the offensive brilliance that had them No. 2 in total offense and third in scoring entering the game.

Marcus Mariota threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions, his first since Nov. 17, 2012, against Stanford.

The Ducks outgained Arizona 506-482 in total yards, but couldn’t overcome all the uncharacteristic miscues to lose consec-utive road games for the first time since 2007.

Earlier in the week, De’Anthony Thomas said it was no big deal for the Ducks to go to the Rose Bowl. After this debacle, that’s out of reach, too.

Mariota’s first interception came on a spectacular play, kick-starting Arizona for the monumental upset.

It came on Oregon’s first play from scrimmage, when Bralon Addison dropped a pass near the sideline. Arizona cornerback Shaquille Richardson snared the carom and flipped it back to teammate Scooby Wright as he was falling out of bounds. It ended Mariota’s Pac-12 record streak of passes without an interception at 353 and Carey followed with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Milestone Wins

Rich Rodriguez enters his third season as head coach of the Arizona football program. He was introduced as Arizona’s 30th head coach on Nov. 22, 2011.

Rodriguez carries a career record of 140-94-2 in 21 seasons, marked by Division I records of 60-26 at West Virginia, 15-22 at Michigan and 20-10 with the Wildcats. He is the first coach in Arizona history to lead the program to bowl games in his first two seasons at the helm.

In Rodriguez’s second season, the Wildcats post-ed an 8-5 record with a bowl victory over the Bos-ton College Eagles in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La. Arizona also knocked off a top-10 ranked team for the second-straight season with a 42-16 win over No. 5 Oregon on Nov. 23.

Running back Ka’Deem Carey earned consensus All-America honors for the second-straight sea-son, was named the 2013 Pac-12 offensive Player of the Year and a Doak Walker Award finalist. He ended his three seasons in Tucson as Arizona’s all-time career rushing leader (4,239 yards) and all-time all-purpose yardage leader (5,483).

Senior B.J. Denker threw for 2,516 yards, com-pleting 233 of 381 attempts with just seven inter-ceptions, and connected on 16 scores to eight dif-ferent receivers. Showing his versatility, Denker also rushed for 949 yards on 181 attempts with 13 scores.

The 2012 season proved successful for Arizona in Rodriguez’s spread-offense, no-huddle system. The Cats beat No. 10 USC, 39-36, on Oct. 27 en route to an 8-5 season and a win over Nevada in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Carey led the na-tion in total rushing yards (1,929) and yards per game (148.38) while rewriting the Arizona record book. For his efforts, Carey was named first-team All-Pac-12 and a consensus All-American, UA’s first on the offensive side of the ball.

Rodriguez inherited a fifth-year senior in quarter-back Matt Scott who was perfectly suited to run the Wildcat offense. With Scott as signal caller, Arizona was 7-5 as he orchestrated come-from-behind wins against No. 10 USC and Nevada in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Earning sec-ond-team All-Pac-12 honors, Scott led the confer-ence in yards per game with 301.7 and ranked No. 2 in the league in total yardage.

Austin Hill totaled 81 catches for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns to lead the Wildcat receivers in 2012. He was named a Biletnikoff Award semifi-nalist, second-team All-Pac-12 and fourth-team All-America by Phil Steele.

Arizona Notebook

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Anu Solomon threw for 425 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start, and Arizona broke a 45-year-old school record with 787 total yards in a season-opening 58-13 rout over Nevada-Las Vegas Friday night.

Solomon shook off some early-game jitters with a series of big plays to break the school freshman record for pass-ing yards, highlighted by a 92-yard touchdown pass to Austin Hill on the first play of the second half.

Terris Jones-Grigsby laid the groundwork, running for 124 yards and a touchdown in Arizona’s first game in three years without two-time All-American Ka’Deem Carey. Freshman Nick Wilson added an 85-yard touchdown run to help the Wildcats break the school record of 691 total yards, set against New Mexico in 1969.

UNLV failed to capitalize on a few early offensive opportunities and had no chance once Arizona got rolling for its second straight lopsided loss to the Wildcats.

Blake Decker threw for 252 yards and a touchdown in his debut for the Rebels, who lost to Arizona by the same score last season in Las Vegas.

Solomon spent his freshman season learning Arizona’s system while redshirting behind B.J. Denker, then emerged from a four-way battle to start this season’s opener.

Coach Rich Rodriguez said Solomon wouldn’t have to worry about looking over his shoulder if he makes a mis-take, but added the other quarterbacks would likely play this season, if not Friday.

Solomon, who’s from Las Vegas, had a bit of trouble with his touch early, overthrowing a couple of long passes, including one to Samajie Grant that would have been a touchdown.

He finally dialed one late in the first quarter, dropping in a pass behind coverage for a 39-yard touchdown to Nate Phillips.

Solomon kept the big plays rolling after that, squeezing a ball in front of coverage to Grant, who turned it into a 63-yard touchdown pass. Solomon added a 13-yard scoring pass to Davonte’ Neal that put Arizona up 24-6 at halftime.

Solomon opened the second half with the 92-yard catch-and-run TD to Hill and Jones-Grigsby was rewarded for his hard work with a 2-yard touchdown run that made it 38-13.

Solomon finished 25 of 44 and completed passes to 10 different players. Hill (110) and Grant (101) each went over 100 yards receiving.

Like Solomon, Decker won a close quarterback battle, edging out junior Nick Sherry after transferring from Scott-sdale Community College.

Decker was able to gouge out a few big chunks in the first half, including a 52-yard pass to Devonte Boyd and a 49-yard run. The Rebels couldn’t capitalize on the good field position, settling for a pair of field goals and a 43-yarder that Jonathan Leiva missed at the horn.

Decker hit Anthony Williams on a 2-yard score early in the third quarter, but it was too late; Arizona was well on its way to another blowout.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Nick Wilson is off to a fast start for the Arizona Wildcats.

The freshman ran for 174 yards on 30 carries, and his go-ahead touchdown changed the momentum in Arizona’s 26-23 victory over Texas-San Antonio on Thursday night.

Wilson gave Arizona a 20-16 lead with a 2-yard run with 26 seconds left in the first half.

Cayleb Jones had an 85-yard scoring reception for Arizona on the first play from scrimmage, and redshirt fresh-man Anu Solomon was 17 of 32 for 231 yards after throwing for 425 yards and four touchdowns against UNLV.

UTSA coach Larry Coker, who started the school’s program in 2011 after his national-title stint at Miami, thought Arizona’s touchdown at the end of the half changed the game.

Casey Skowron made four field goals, converting from 44 and 28 yards in the third quarter to make it 26-16.

The Roadrunners, coming off a 20-point victory in their opener at Houston, pulled within three on David Glasco II’s 3-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Arizona intercepted two of Tucker Carter’s passes in the final 1 1/2 minutes to seal the game, though the final pick off was nullified by a penalty.

The Wildcats had 452 yards of offense after setting a school record with 787 yards against UNLV

It looked as if it would be another blowout shortly after the opening kickoff. On the next play, Solomon flared a conservative sideline pass at Jones close to Arizona’s 30. Jones eluded a tackle and scored on the 85-yarder 18 seconds into the game.

Jones was back in his home state after sitting out last season following his transfer from Texas. In Austin, he re-ceived a two-year probated sentence for misdemeanor assault for punching a Longhorns tennis player in 2013.

Jones caught four passes for 143 yards. He caught two passes in 10 games for Texas.

Arizona scored on the next possession as well after holding UTSA to three plays and a punt. The Wildcats got inside the 20 before Solomon was sacked by defensive tackle Ferrington Macon, which brought out Skowron for a 38-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead less than 5 minutes into the game.

UTSA responded by going 85 yards for a touchdowns, using 11 plays and 5 minutes off the clock just before the end of the first quarter. Carter, who ran twice during the drive for 28 yards, got the Roadrunners on the board with a 10-yard scoring completion to tight end David Morgan II.

Carter finished with 228 yards and a TD on 22-of-33 passing.

After giving up Skowron’s 23-yard field goal, the Roadrunners took a 14-13 lead on Kam Jones’ 18-yard run.

It went to 16-13 with 4:43 before halftime when the spread-offense deep snap was high to Solomon, who scooped up the loose ball in his own end zone and was chased out of the end zone for a safety.

Arizona Notebook

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Anu Solomon threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, Nick Wilson ran for 171 yards and Arizona held off Nevada 35-28 Saturday night.

Arizona (3-0) came into the game with the nation’s fifth-best offense and had another big night against the Wolfpack, rolling up 507 yards.

Wilson ran for a pair of touchdowns and gave Arizona a 100-yard rusher for the 20th straight game, tied for longest in the FBS since 1996. Solomon finished 22-of-26 passing and threw two second-half touchdown passes to Cayleb Jones, who had nine catches for 116 yards.

Cody Fajardo kept Nevada (2-1) in it, throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns, but the Wolfpack turned the ball over on downs their last drive.

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said after the 2012 New Mexico Bowl that he hoped to never face Fajardo again. The Wolf-pack quarterback lit up the Wildcats in that game, throwing for 256 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 140 and another score.

Fajardo, on the other hand, was looking forward to facing Arizona again. Despite having what may have been the best game of his career in the bowl game, Nevada lost the game 49-48 after the Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the final minute.

Fajardo had some success against Arizona early as the Wolfpack picked their way down the field.

Nevada held the ball for the game’s opening 9:33 and had another scoring drive that lasted 6:08.

The problem for the Wolfpack was how both ended: in field goals.

Thirty-two plays, 141 yards and more than 15 minutes resulting in just six points -- a dangerous game against an explosive offense like Arizona’s.

The Wildcats needed just 1:50 to score their first touchdown, a 2-yard run by Wilson. The freshman scored the next one, too, bursting off left tackle for a 28-yard score.

Solomon, who threw an ill-advised interception early in the second quarter, showed off his athletic ability just before halftime, rolling to the left and throwing off his back foot to hit Tyrell Johnson perfectly in stride for a 35-yard touchdown.

Fajardo finally got the Wolfpack into the endzone after that, orchestrating a quick 75-yard drive capped by his 7-yard touch-down pass to Jarred Gipson that cut Arizona’s halftime lead to 21-13.

The confidence of seeing six points go up on the board instead of three carried over into the third quarter, when Fajardo opened with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Hasaan Henderson.

Arizona had an answer. Two, in fact.

Solomon threw another touchdown on the run, this one going the other way, this one a 22-yarder to Jones. The Solo-mon-Jones connection worked again on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 24-yarder that put the Wildcats up 35-21.

Nevada and Fajardo still weren’t done.

He found Jarred Gipson on a 6-yard touchdown pass that cut Arizona’s lead to 35-28 and the Wolfpack got the ball back at their own 17-yard line with 3:04 left.

Fajardo took Nevada to near midfield, but his fourth-down attempt was just out of Jericho Richardson’s reach.

» Arizona won its 12th-straight non-confer-ence game dating to the 2011 season. That string is a new school record since UA first established any conference affiliation in 1931 (Border Conference).

» Head Coach Rich Rodriguez and the Wild-cats have opened the year 3-0 for the third-straight season. The last UA coach to lead the program to consecutive 3-0 starts in the first three years of a tenure was Jim Young (1973-75).

» For the fourth-straight game, Arizona pro-duced a 100-yard rusher (Nick Wilson, 29-171) and a 100-yard receiver (Cayleb Jones, 9-116).

» Solomon saw his streak of 83-consecutive passes without an interception come to an end. It was the first thrown interception of his career and first turnover of the season for Arizona.

Arizona Notebook

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Anu Solomon hit Austin Hill on a 47-yard Hail Mary on the game’s final play and Arizona scored 36 points in the fourth quarter to pull off an improbable 49-45 win over California Saturday night.

Cal (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) threatened to turn Arizona’s whiteout into a blowout, deflating the Wildcats and their white-shirt-wearing fans with two quick scores and a 22-point halftime lead.

Arizona (4-0, 1-0) charged back behind Solomon, who threw for 520 yards and had four of his five touch-down passes in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats recovered an onside kick after Cal was called for a batting penalty and pulled within 2 after Solomon hit Cayleb Jones on a 15-yard scoring pass.

Arizona got the ball back with less than a minute left and pulled off the miracle when Hill, a senior who missed last season with a torn ACL, brought the ball down between five Cal defenders.

Solomon shook off a pair of first half interceptions to complete 47 of 73 passes, both school records. Jones caught 13 passes for 186 yards.

Arizona finished with 627 total yards and Cal had 573.

Behind Jared Goff, who threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns, Cal led 31-16 heading into the fourth quarter.

That’s when Arizona kicked its high-octane offense in gear, marching for one score after another.

Solomon hit Hill on a 9-yard touchdown pass, then Jones on a 16-yarder after Khalfani Muhammad scored on a 50-yard touchdown run. Muhammad scored again on a 6-yard run to put Cal seemingly in good posi-tion, up 45-30 with just over 5 minutes left.

But the Wildcats kept coming.

Arizona marched for a 6-yard touchdown run by Terris Jones-Grigsby then recovered a second try at an onside kick after Cal’s batting penalty. Jones, who had 13 catches for 186 yards, pulled down a 15-yard pass from Solomon with 2:44 left, but the Wildcats’ 2-point try failed.

With a chance to put the game away, Cal couldn’t finish it off. James Langford hooked a 47-yard field goal left, turning the ball over to Arizona at its own 29-yard line with 52 seconds left.

Solomon completed a couple of short passes before finding Hill on a 20-yard pass that moved the chains and briefly stopped the clock. Arizona raced to the line and Solomon spiked the ball to set up the final shot at the end zone.

Hill came down with it, sending the Wildcats streaming from their sideline and the Bears collapsing to the turf.

» Arizona overcame a 22-point halftime deficit (28-6) to win 49-45. It is the largest deficit over- come to win a game in school history, topping three previous occasions of 21-point deficits.

» Previously, the largest deficit overcome to win a Pac-10/12 conference game was 18 points. That happened to be against California on Sept. 27, 1980, when the Wildcats erased a 21-3 third-quarter deficit to win 31-24 in Berke-ley.

» Arizona’s 36 fourth-quarter points are the most in any quarter in program history. The previous mark was 35 points in the second quarter of an eventual 70-0 rout of Idaho in 2008.

» Quarterback Anu Solomon set a school sin-gle-game record with 520 passing yards.
