DG Brian’s Club visits

October 2016

I am a member of Lower Herbert Halifax Lions Club. I was born in Toowoomba in 1943 and was first schooled by correspondence, then in New South Wales and finishing school in Queensland.

I started my working life as a fisherman with my father. In 1959, while in Gladstone, I met Ellen, we married in 1962 and now have four children and four grandchildren.

Leaving the fishing Industry, I worked for Earthmoving Contractors, then later, in the Mt Morgan mine. I then moved to Bundaberg in mid-1964, and worked building cane harvesters and loaders. Then started my own engineering workshop. During this time I also operated the slipway and then built my own two trawlers, on which I employed skippers and crew while continuing to do all repairs and network.

We moved to Lucinda in 1994 while our youngest son completed his education at James Cook University.

2017-2018 1st VDG Nominee Lion Allan Hansen

From 1989 until 2000 I was the Queensland State Trawl Committee Chairman and also held a position on the Queensland Fish Management Authority Board for a period.

I was a member of Bundaberg Apex Club until reaching the permitted age of 40. I was invited to join Lower Herbert Halifax Lions in 2007 and have served as Membership Chairman, Vice President, and President twice and at present serve on the Unit Management Committee .

I am presently the Francis Creek Driver Reviver Co-ordinator for Ingham District and part of the 2016 Zone 4 District Convention Committee.

In 2014/15 I became 201Q2 Zone4 Chairman, holding the position again for the 2015/2016 year. I am presently serving as 2nd Vice District Governor for 2016-17.

2017-2018 2nd VDG Nominee Lion Gary Young

Lion Gary was born in Hobart in November 1948 where he lived at Butlers George which was near the construction of the Tasmanian Hydro Electric Scheme Power House in central Tasmania. When he was 5 years old his mother moved him to Melbourne where he lived until he was 21. Gary completed his apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner at the age of 20.

During his time as an apprentice he also joined the CMF (Army Reserve) at the age of 17. He was the youngest Army Recovery Mechanic (Tow Truck Driver) in both the (CMF) reserve and the regular Army and at that time and did not have a driving licence .

He at this time had 2+ years’ military service before he had to register for National service and was exempt because of his military time already completed.

After completing his apprenticeship Gary joined the regular Army and after completing all required training was posted to 1RAR based in Townsville. Gary left the Army in 1972 after Vietnam and lives in Townsville with his wife Pat.

Gary married Patricia in 1972 after a long engagement of about 6 months. Gary and Patty have been married for 44 years last May. They have three daughters, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren but don’t tell his wife Pat who is 39 years old with 67 years’ experience.

After leaving the Army in 1972 Gary joined Queensland Rail working firstly as a Carriage Builder in the Townsville Workshops then became the workshop Peer Supporter facilitating some 600 employees, then taught the new SAP Computer System Coach to some

400 employees. He then became the Townsville Workshop Site Materials Controller at a time when the $40 Million “Great South Pacific Express “ train was built in Townsville. Gary worked for 25 years for Queensland Rail before retiring.

While WORKING for Queensland Rail Gary joined the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard in 1983 where in 1994 he was elected to the position of Townsville Flotilla Commander and held the rating of Patrol Officer. Gary is still in Coast Guard today and is now one of the local flotillas most senior Off Shore/Reef Skippers/Crew Leaders and Trainer/Assessor currently holding Cert. IV

Trainer and Assessor. He trains all new members in the Maritime Course of “Shipboard Safety Skill Set“ which all new members must have before advancing.

In 1983 or thereabouts Gary also joined the RAAF Active Reserve and was one of half a dozen who were the original members of the squadron designated as # 27 Squadron City of Townsville RAAFAR where he remained a member for 10 years.

Gary left the RAAF to become a Naval Reserve Officer with ‘TS Coral Sea‘ the Naval cadet training unit in Townsville. Due to a heavy work load he had to decline the offer. Gary was also the Executive Officer in charge of the newly formed Dolphin Sea Cadets.

Gary has been awarded the Australian Service Medal and the National Medal for nearly 30 years of service to his country both as a member of the Defence Force and as a volunteer of a National Maritime Rescue organisation.

Gary became a Lion some 25 years ago after being introduced by the late Lion Warren Hansen. He has remained a member of the Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club and is now a life member of that club.

Since joining Lions Gary has held club positions of 1st year Director, 2nd year Director, Membership Officer, Tail Twister, Lion Tamer, 3rd Vice President, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President and finally Club President.

Lion Gary has held District 201Q2 positions of Zone 6 Chairman for two terms, Zone 7 Chairman and Regional Zone Co-Ordinator for Zones 4,5,6, and 7.

Currently Gary holds the Cabinet positions of Zone 7 Chairman (second term), District Alert/Emergency Chairman, District Insurance, Compliance, Health & Safety Chairman.

Lion Gary is also a member of the Australian Institute of Emergency Services.

Lion Gary’s goal if elected to the position of 201Q2 2nd Vice District Governor for the period 2017 / 2018 is to support the District Governor but more importantly to “SUPPORT ALL LIONS AND THEIR FAMILES “ within our 201Q2 District.

Cairns Barrier Reef Lions feed grey nomads

Another Thursday night and the residents of the Lake Placid Caravan Park sit down to enjoy the BBQ provided by members of Cairns Barrier Reef Lions.

“Our needs are simple” one resident said, “some food, a wine and much laughter”, and while Lions provided the food, the residents provided the rest and had a great time.

Along with the fun, fellowship and the food, over $2500.00 was raised by the visitors to Cairns as they enjoyed a meal each Thursday night. A big thank you to the park managers for inviting Lions in to cover the Thursday BBQ, and to the residents of the caravan park who support us.

Pictured below, the final BBQ for the visitors to Cairns with a few club members.

On 3rd September, Whitsunday Lions lost its longest serving member with the passing of Lion Alf Scully. With over 50 years of Lions service between the Bowen and Whitsunday Clubs, Alf was a dedicated and passionate member of our organization.

He was one of the founders of Lions Camp Kanga, and as Zone Chairman at the time, Alf was a true believer in the value of the project. Alf dedicated many hundreds of man hours to get the Camp up and running.

Alf was a Life Member of the Whitsunday Club, with Melvin Jones, and William R. Tresize awards to his name. As a very successful businessman, he put all his leadership and mentoring skills to great use in promoting the Lions organisation, he was a champion to all who knew him.

Our condolences to Evon and family at this sad time.

Zone 2 Lions enjoy social day in Irvinebank

There might not have been many of us, but the Atherton and Mareeba Lions who took up the invitation to visit the historic tin mining town of Irvinebank in the dry country west of Herberton had a great day out.

We began with a visit to the Loudoun House museum, the oldest highset timber and corrugated iron building in North Queensland, built by the town’s founder John Moffat in 1884. Nearby Vulcan Mine, the richest and deepest tin mine in Australia, began operations in 1889 and was the mainstay of the local economy for 30 years. The last crushing was in the early 1990s.

Next we headed for Brian’s Shed, a wonderland of tools and old machinery. While the vehicle bodies may be rusted and broken, Brian and his mate keep each engine working to perfection—even the old 1955 Zephyr!

Our final stop the local pub for fish and chips and a couple of drinks—a great day out and well worth a visit.

Lions Don and Roslyn Bryant of City of Townsville Host Lions Club recently visited Norfolk Island Lions Club which conducts its dinner meetings in the old Surgeon’s Quarters, which houses the Lions Historical Photography Display of Norfolk Island. For those Lions who have been fortunate enough to have visited Norfolk Island, it is located in the Kingston precinct of the old convict settlement.

Norfolk Island Lions Club has 23 members and those in attendance made Roslyn and myself very welcome. Much more could be scribed, but space is unfortunately, prohibitive.

After the dinner meeting was concluded, the trestle tables and chairs were removed and stored and the row of display stands replaced. The row of historical photographs pictured are just a small part of a large and wonderfully presented, informative and interesting viewing.

Lion Don would suggest that a vast percentage of Australians are not aware of Norfolk Island’s WW2 defence and strategic involvement.

Mareeba Lions and Lioness were out early and in force to set up for the 2016 MSF Sugar Limited Mareeba Lions Family Fun Metrogaine. 40 teams set out on the course around town to solve the puzzle and win the points. As well this year the event incorporated skateboarding competition, graffiti master class, basketball, and Zumba—just in case anyone still had some energy left!

A number of major sponsors supported the event resulting in the event raising $5,000.00 for the Australian Lion Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

Mareeba Metrogaine another outstanding success

Recently His Excellency the Hon Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland, presented fourteen Far North Queensland residents with honours and awards.

Amongst the recipients was Mareeba Lion Tom Braes who was honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division, for supporting the advancement of a number of Far North Queensland

The wisdom of an elder ... Sally was driving home from one of her business trips

in Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road. As the trip was a long one, she stopped the car and offered the Navajo woman a ride.

With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car. Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk, but the old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw and studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally.

‘What in bag?’ asked the old woman. Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, ‘it’s a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband.’

The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said:

‘Good trade ...’

Lost in translation! A hotel in Zurich: Because of the impropriety of entertaining guests of the opposite sex in the bedroom, it is suggested that the lobby be used for this purpose.

In a cemetery: Persons are prohibited from picking flowers, from any but their own graves.

In a Nairobi restaurant: Customers who find our waitresses rude, ought to see the manager.

In a Bangkok Temple: It is forbidden to enter a woman, even a foreigner, if dressed as a man.

A cocktail lounge in Norway: Ladies are requested not to have children in the bar.

A doctor's office in Rome: Specialist in women and other diseases.

On the menu of a Swiss restaurant: Our wines leave you nothing to hope for.

In a Japanese bar: Special cocktails for the ladies with nuts.

A Croatian hotel: The flattening of underwear with pleasure, is the job of the chambermaid.

A hotel in Osaka: You are invited to take advantage of the chambermaid.

A Thai advertisement for donkey rides: Would you like to ride on your own ass?

An airline ticket office in Copenhagen: We take your bags and send them in all directions.

In the lobby of a Moscow hotel: You are welcome to visit the cemetery, where famous Russian and Soviet composers, artists and writers are buried daily, except Thursday.
