What are the benefits of SVG?
• Plan specific laparoscopic surgery and need for Colorectal input• Aid in deciding who does the surgery and where the surgery is done (in other words, if the SVG is positive, suggest endometriosis surgery occur at Tertiary Laparoscopic Surgical Unit)• Negate need for 2 laparoscopies• Exclude severe endometriosis before commencing fertility treatment
How safe is an SVG?
Ultrasound uses sound waves unlike X-rayswhich use ionizing radiation.
No anaesthetic is required. No hospital stay isrequired.
Procedure will take up to 45 minutes.
You can resume normal activities after theprocedure.

SVG
Prediction of posterior compartment deep infiltrating
endometriosis (DIE)
Prediction of obliteratedpouch of Douglas (POD)
What is SVG?
Sonovaginography is a new technique in theprediction of posterior compartment deep infiltrative endometriosis (DIE). OMNI is the only ultrasound site in Australia performing this new diagnostic technique.
This new technique is based on transvaginalultrasonography combined with the introduction of acoustic medium into the vagina which creates an acoustic window between the transvaginal probe and the surrounding structures of the vagina.
Who can have SVG?
If your patient has any of the following symptoms:
• Chronic pelvic pain• Dysmenorrhoea• Dyspareunia• Dyschezia• History of previous endometriosis with recurrent symptoms
What is visualised at SVG?
• Anterior & posterior vaginal fornices• Anterior & posterior vaginal walls• Retrocervical area• Uterosacral ligaments• Pouch of Douglas (POD)• Recto-vaginal septum• Rectosigmoid colon
Why is SVG useful?
Many women with endometriosis at laparoscopy have had a normal pre-operative pelvic scan.
SVG challenges the concept of a “normal pelvis” on ultrasound.
In other words, SVG gives extra diagnosticinformation over and above conventional sonography of the pelvis.
• SVG can predict DIE in two areas: - Rectovaginal endometriotric nodule - Rectosigmoid endometriotric nodule
• SVG can also predict obliteration of the POD
