OPEN SESSION 

Below is a summary of the research activity on campus during February and March, 2015.  This is not an extensive list of research activities but rather represent the activities that were brought to our attention. 

INSTITUTIONAL INITIATIVES

AGILITY 

Lesley Brown (Interim VPR) and Matthew Letts (Interim AVPR) led several meetings with faculty champions to refine AGILITY’s vision as well as numerous information sessions on AGILITY with the university community, as well as throughout southern Alberta and Calgary.  Agility was announced at both the Calgary Alumni Dinner and the Town Hall. 

The University officially launched AGILITY at a media event in April.  The event included tours of the new fine arts innovation zone on level 8 of University Centre for the Arts.  As we move into Year 1 of the program, we anticipate launching scholarships, fellowships and innovation grants.  For more information on AGILITY, visit AGILITY’s website at http://www.agility‐ulethbridge.ca/  

Plans for the 2015/16 AGILITY speaker series are underway.  Initial speakers are: 

Tom Burke – Senior Investment Advisor, Canaccord Genuity, who will moderate a roundtable with agribusiness and agri‐tech leaders entitled Canadian Agriculture in the 21st Century: Technology, Finance, Sustainability 

Steve Cloutier – Chief Executive Officer, Roper Energy Inc., who will deliver a public lecture on Energy Startups: Key Lessons and Insights for Today’s Entrepreneur 

Paul Oss– Public Affairs Officer, Ministry of Innovation and Advanced Education, Province of Alberta, who will deliver a lecture on A Public Sector Perspective on Keeping Pace with Technological Change 

Chris Perry – CKP Farms Ltd. and Grow the Energy Circle Ltd. in southern Alberta, who will hold a workshop on integrating environmental stewardship and innovative technology into agriculture.

ENVIRONMENT 

David Hill (VPR Office) and Derek Peddle (Geography) spent two days in Yellowknife, NWT in meetings with various government agencies. The purpose of those meetings was to develop longer‐term working and research relationships in the use of remote sensing as an integral part of resource management and monitoring strategies for the Government of the NWT. They met with Minister J Michael Miltenberger (Government House Leader, Minister of Finance, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, and Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation) as well as senior officials in the department of Environment and Natural Resources as well as the Informatics Shared Services Centre. In addition they met with officials from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the City of Yellowknife. 

They identified opportunities for collaborative research being undertaken at the U of L (Derek Peddle and others), as well as opportunities for training and collaboration. Interest was expressed to ensure that current academic arrangements between the U of L and Aurora College might also be adapted to include expertise in remote sensing. Finally, a major international conference, the International Arctic Remote Sensing Conference

(June 15‐17, 2016) that is being organized by the Alberta Terrestrial Imaging Centre (ATIC) in 2016 will be held in Yellowknife and will be co‐hosted by the Government of the Northwest Territories. They are exploring a pilot project with Fisheries and Oceans Canada on the use of remote sensing for remote mine reclamation and contaminant tracking.

FACULTY 

The premiere performance of Brian Black's (Music) new string quartet took place at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music in London, England. 

The Complex Social Change research group launched their book, Complex Social Change: teaching, performing, exhibiting, designing, mapping in March.  This publication wraps up the first two years of an interdisciplinary research program and collaborative partnership. involving Louise Barrett (Psychology), Lisa Doolittle (Theatre & Drama), Jean Harrowing (Health Sciences), Emily Luce and Christine Clark, Bruce MacKay (Liberal Education), Tiffany Muller Myrdahl, and Josephine Mills (Art). To date, Complex Social Change has included a range of activities: connected research projects; exhibitions, performances, and video screenings; a Liberal Education course on activism; a website and social media posts; activist theatre projects; and a series of panels and guest lectures.  

This publication and the phase of research was funded with a University of Lethbridge Interdisciplinary Research Development Fund Grant.  

The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Secretariat approved the University’s request to renew Claudia Gonzalez’s (Kinesiology) CRC in Sensorimotor Control for a second five‐year term.  The award is valued at $500,000 over 5 years. Read more here: http://www.uleth.ca/unews/article/gonzalez‐has‐canada‐research‐chair‐renewed#.VS0o7_nF_Al  

Gordon Hunter (Management) recently published a book, The Older I Get the Better I Was. The book is a compilation of stories from individuals in southern Alberta describing their experiences with hockey as they or their children were growing up.  

Bryan Kolb (Neuroscience) will receive an honorary degree from the U of L at Spring Convocation. 

Claudia Malacrida (Sociology) published A Special Hell: Institutional Life in Alberta’s Eugenic Years. This book is a culmination of over 15 years research and draws on oral history interviews with ex‐inmates of Alberta’s Michener Centre (formerly the Provincial Training School for Mental Defectives). The research also draws on Eugenic Board and Michener Centre archival records. Together, the survivor narratives and the archival record paint a harrowing picture of institutional life and the casual violence embedded in the Alberta Eugenics program, which operated legally and publicly from 1928 to 1972.  Claudia hosted a book launch and reading at the Penny Building in February. 

Recent research by Gerlinde Metz (Neuroscience), Olga Kovalchuk (Biological Sciences) and Igor Kovalchuk (Biological Sciences) and a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Alberta showed that stress during pregnancy has generational effects.  The resulting paper, “Ancestral exposure to stress epigenetically programs preterm birth risk and adverse maternal and newborn outcomes,” has received over 15,000 media hits around the world, and has been highlighted as one of the top articles in BMC Medicine.  Altmetric ranks it among the top 1% of articles it has ever tracked.  The article is published in the August 2014 edition of BMC Medicine and can be accessed online BioMed Central:  http://www.biomedcentral.com/1741‐7015/12/121

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW (PDF) 

The University awarded its PDF allocation from Alberta Innovates Technology Futures to Stacey Wetmore (Chemistry & Biochemistry).  The award is to be used to recruit a PDF for up to a 2 year term with a maximum funding of $140,000 (or $70,000 for a 1 year term). 

Erin Spring, a postdoctoral fellow with the Institute for Child and Youth Studies, received IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) Canada’s Frances E. Russell Grant.  Valued at $1,000, the grant is for a project that builds on previous work for her Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, and focuses on Aboriginal young adult responses to contemporary Canadian young adult fiction. Read more:  http://www.ibby‐canada.org/erin‐spring‐receives‐ibby‐canadas‐russell‐grant/  

STUDENT 

Cheyenne Conrad, a MSc candidate, is the recipient of the 2015 Canadian Meat Council (CMC) Associate Members Scholarship.  The CMC will present the award, valued at $3,000 to her at the 95th CMC Annual Conference in Ottawa in May. 

The School of Graduate Studies hosted the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Finals Competition as part of the Graduate Students’ Association 9th Annual Meeting of the Minds conference.  The winners are: 

1st: Cameron Bye, MSc Candidate in Neuroscience, presented on "What role do NMDA receptors have in learning and memory?" (Supervisor: Rob McDonald, Neuroscience) 

2nd: Kartik Iyer, PhD Candidate in Neuroscience, presented on "Brain Stimulation to Enhance Memory by Modulation of Sleep Brain Activity." (Supervisor: David Euston, Neuroscience) 

3rd: Rudy Majumdar, PhD Candidate in Chemistry, presented on "Understanding the Structure of Heavy‐Oil Asphaltenes using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy." (Co‐supervisors: Paul Hazendonk and Michael Gerken, Chemistry & Biochemistry)

Submitted 

ORIS submitted43 grant applications, requesting a combined total of $27,621,221 in new research funding.  This includes: 

2 applications to Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund, 

3 Canada Foundation for Innovation John R. Evans Leaders Fund applications, 

1 application to Phase 2 of CIHR’s Foundation Scheme competition,

FACULTY 

The University received over $29,642 in new externally‐funded research grants and contracts.  Many of these awards are multi‐year grants and the funds will be paid out over the term of the award. This includes:

The University faired extremely well in the fall grant competitions.  Overall, 27 of 43 applications were successful (63% success rate), representing $6,195,858 in new funding payable over multiple years. 

Canada Foundation for Innovation: $2,125,452 

NSERC: 3,478,839 

SSHRC: $590,567 

The success is due in part to the exceptional team of grant facilitators in ORIS – Penny D’Agnone (Health & Medical Sciences), Gillian Laird (Natural Sciences), and Hector MacIntyre (Social Sciences & Humanities). The funding results were announced in March; however, all are embargoed until a public announcement is made by the respective agencies.  Details of individual awards will be announced later this summer. 

ORIS and its numerous research committes have been busy adjudicating internal grant competitions. The competitions are as follows:   

Community of University Research Excellence Development (CREDO) grants. ORIS awarded 6 CREDO grants with a combined value of $123,813 in funding supports.  A stipulation of funding is a requirement to apply for external funding. 

Health Research Accelerator Fund (HRAF). ORIS received 13 applications to the HRAF, asking for a combined total in excess of $130,000.  ORIS awarded 5 grants, each valued at $10,000 to the following faculty members: Aaron Gruber, Artur Luczak, Gerlinde Metz (Neuroscience); Monique Sedgwick (Health Sciences); Ute Wieden‐Kothe (Chemistry & Biochemistry).  (Committee: selection of internal health research peers) 

International Research Engagement Fund (IREF). ORIS received 1 application to the seed grant stream and 12 applications to the project grant stream, asking for a combined total of $244,613.  ORIS awarded 1 seed grant valued at $3,000 to Mark Walton (Physics & Astronomy) and 4 project grants, each valued at $18,000, to Andrew Iwaniuk, Rob McDonald, Matthew Tata (Neuroscience); and Claudia Steinke (Health Sciences).  Project details are found in Appendix A.1. (Committee: University of Lethbridge Research Committee) 

University of Lethbridge Research Fund (ULRF). ORIS received 23 applications seeking a combined value of $186,000. The U of L Research Committee awarded 17 University of Lethbridge Research Fund (ULRF) grants, with a combined value of $132,000. 

Funding for the HRAF and IREF programs was made possible by an allocation from the 2014 Strategic Priorities Fund. Project details are found in Appendix A.1. 

The U of L Travel Fund Committee funded 59 Priority I and 6 Priority II applications, for travel between April 1 and June 30, 2015 with a total value of $58,500. 

STUDENT 

Farzad Aryan and Mark Thom from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science are the inaugural recipients of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) – Alberta Graduate Excellence Fellowships.  The Fellowships are valued at $10,000 each for the period of January to August 2015. 

AIHS announced the results of the 2015 Summer Studentship competition. With 9 successful applications, this is the U of L’s most successful year, having averaged 6 awards in the each of the previous three years. As well, the U of L’s success rate of 64% exceeds the provincial average (40%).  We are unable to publicize the results until an official announcement is made by AIHS. 

RESEARCH EVENTS 

Research events 

The CCBN participated in Brain Awareness Week, which is a global campaign to increase public awareness of the process and benefits of brain research. Every March the CCBN engages in a week‐long celebration of the brain.  This year, Robbin Gibb (Neuroscience) presented a public lecture on “Building brains and futures: One

connection at a time” and the CCBN hosted an open house that enabled the public to tour the facility and meet the scientists.   

The Faculty of Fine Arts hosted a Department of Art Faculty, Staff and MFA exhibit at the Penny Building gallery in February. The exhibition was organized and curated by Art History/Museum Studies majors, which placed them in the interesting position of curating work by their professors. 

The Faculty of Fine Arts hosted a Fine Arts Graduate Colloquium in February.  At this event, graduate students in Art, Drama, Music, New Media and Education shared their ongoing research. 

The Graduate Student Association hosted the 9th Annual Meeting of the Minds Conference on March 20‐21. This conferences provided students from all disciplines and all levels of study (undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellows) the opportunity to present their work. Read more: http://www.uleth.ca/graduate‐studies/events/meeting‐minds‐conference  

ORIS hosted the 3rd Annual Community University Research Exchange (CURE) event in March.  CURE is an initiative that aims to connect researchers at the University of Lethbridge with community members interested in research endeavors.   

This year CURE focused on “community” from a variety of perspectives. Andy Ridge (Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development) spoke on the topic of research results and how they are incorporated into policy and influence decision making at the government level. As well, we welcomed the Alberta Gambling Research Institute (AGRI), the Alberta Centre for Child, Community, and Family Research (ACCFCR), and the Oldman Watershed Council (OWC) who each spoke about their mandates and how they have funded research which has influenced both policy and practice outside of academia. Finally, a number of posters were displayed on research topics ranging from men’s depression to gene expression to small city transit all with the common theme of having a non‐academic partner. 

ORIS hosted a Canadian Association of Research Administrators (CARA) webinar on aboriginal research ethics protocols. 

ORIS hosted a public lecture and reception recognizing the work of Carol Williams (Women & Gender Studies), Glenda Bonifacio (Women & Gender Studies), Patrick Wilson (Anthropology), Bonnie Lee (Health Sciences) and Linda Many Guns (Native American Studies).  Supported by the one‐time Interdisciplinary Research Development Fund, the group explored “Investigating the effectiveness of social programs.”  They hope their work leads to more concise ways in which disadvantaged groups, in particular women, can benefit from having input into, and influence over, social programs designed to assist them. 

ORIS hosted a SSHRC Adjudicators Meeting to discuss the recent SSHRC Insight Grant adjudication meetings and provide insight on the process.  The panel members were Joshua Knapp (Management), Heidi MacDonald (History), John Usher (Management), and Paul Vasey (Psychology). The meeting was organized by Hector MacIntyre.  

ORIS hosted a University Scholars talk in March featuring Janice Rahn (Education).  In her talk she discussed her interdisciplinary practice as a documentary filmmaker, visual artist, and curator. 

The OVPR hosted the annual Celebrating Research Excellence reception in March to recognize research and scholarly excellence at the University. 

Morgan Guo (UILO) organized a networking event to encourage communications among entrepreneurs who wish to participate in the Chinook Entrepreneur Challenge –Student Stream (sponsored by UILO). Sixteen entrepreneurs and several senior local industrial professionals attended the event. 

Dr. Jerome Singleton, who was on seconded to the Faculty of Health Sciences from Dalhousie University to assist with the implementation of the new post‐diploma degree in Therapeutic Recreation, gave a talk on “Collaboration, Coordination, and Communication of Research across the Life Course.” In the talk he explored the many potential research collaborations made possible by the addition of faculty in Therapeutic Recreation.  The talk was sponsored by President Mike Mahon and Interim Vice‐President of Research Dr. Lesley Brown.

Conferences, information sessions, & workshops 

Lesley Brown and Matthew Letts attended the annual WestVAC/VPR meeting in Victoria. This meeting is a gathering of Vice‐Presidents Research and Vice‐Presidents Academic from across western Canada to discuss current issues. 

Lesley Brown and Penny Pickles attended the annual Alliance of Canadian Comprehensive Research Universities (ACCRU) meeting in Ottawa.  ACCRU brings together senior research administrators from small‐ and medium‐sized universities to discuss current issues, meet with Tri‐Council and other funding agency representatives, and explore best practices.  Penny organized the meeting.  

Anil Pereira hosted a series of New Media Virtual Reality Workshops.  He is a Senior Advisor to Montréal‐based Félix and Paul Studios, the leader in 360‐degree, 3D, cinematic filmmaking for the new medium of virtual reality (VR). Anil demonstrated three amazing VR experiences produced by Félix and Paul Studios that recently premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. These amazing short films let viewers sit in the studio with musician Patrick Watson as he plays the piano to his dog; roam the Mongolian plains with yak herders; and join an intimate moment between Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon), and her mother Bobbi (Laura Dern), drawn from the acclaimed feature film Wild, produced by Fox Searchlight. 

David Hill (VPR Office) attended a day‐long workshop hosted by Innovation and Advanced Education, Alberta Innovates‐Energy and Environment Solutions, and Alberta Innovates‐Technology Futures on the 2014‐released Alberta Water Research and Innovation Strategy. The focus of the workshop was to identify and clarify the roles of various funders, improved connections with university researchers as well as industry and to ensure that progress on the strategy can be measured and monitored. It is clear that there is an ongoing need to focussed research in a number of areas, and that specific roles will be carried out by Alberta Innovates‐Energy and Environment Solutions. The U of L is well placed in those discussions and will remain engaged in the ongoing discussions. 

The U of L is an affiliated academic partner of Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD). The CDRD is Canada’s fully‐integrated national drug development and commercialization centre. Morgan Guo (UILO) organized a campus visit by the CDRD.  While on campus, CDRD representatives met with faculty members from Department of Biological Sciences, specifically Roy Golsteyn, James Thomas, and Igor Kovalchuk to discuss potential collaborative opportunities. 

Hector MacIntyre attended the Accelerating Alberta’s Social Innovation Ecosystem meeting in Red Deer. This meeting brought together a variety of cross‐sector stakeholders from across Alberta to discuss future steps in the wake of the provincial government’s cancellation of the Social Innovation Fund in December 2014. Over 50 attendees from government, non‐profit foundations, social innovation industry, and community groups were present. A presentation from BC ministry officials was particularly informative and highlighted the important role research universities played in developing their social innovation sector. Lethbridge College and the U of L were the only Alberta post‐secondary institutions in attendance. It was worthwhile to hear from people in other sectors about how community‐based social science research could contribute to developing Alberta’s social innovation ecosystem.  

ORIS, along with the School of Graduate Studies, hosted an Alberta Innovates Health Solutions (AIHS) information session to provide information about submitting graduate studentship, clinician fellowship, or MD‐PhD studentship applications to AIHS for training support. 

Morgan Guo gave an information session in the Faculty of Health Sciences on collaborative funding sources. More than 20 Faculty members attended the session. 

Morgan Guo attended the "Economic Summit" organized by SouthGrow. The event focused on building value chains for more industrial sectors in Southern Alberta. This event attracted attendees from industry, economic development agencies, municipality governments, and educational institution. It was a great networking opportunity for UILO.  

Morgan Guo (UILO) attended an UAV demo organized by Alberta Geomatics Group (AGG).  At the demo, a geomatics company Ventus (founded by two U of L alumni) presented their latest UAV (drone) for aerial

surveillance services. Ventus grew fast in past few years and has had clients from major oil& gas companies. This event was great networking opportunities for UILO. 

In partnership with a local volunteering group and Economic Development Lethbridge, the UILO sponsored and co‐organized a visit by Professor Rupal Patel, a speech scientist and social innovator from Northeastern University of Boston, Massachusetts. She gave presentations to Faculty Members and local entrepreneurs.  

ORIS hosted Dr. Frederic Couty (Program Officer for NSERC’s Strategic grant program) and Irene Mikawoz, (Manager of the NSERC Prairie Regional Office, Winnipeg) for an information session on NSERC Strategic Grants program.   

ORIS launched a special two‐stage initiative on research‐creation in conjunction with the Faculty of Fine Arts. This initiative will be led by Dr. Ashok Mathur, Associate Professor and Head of Creative Studies at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan), and Dr. Glen Lowry, Associate Professor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. As a writer, cultural organizer, and interdisciplinary artist Ashok’s work addresses the intersections of race, indigeneity, and creative and artistic research. As a Canada Research Chair in Cultural and Artistic Inquiry (awarded 2005 at Thompson Rivers University) as well as a principal and co‐investigator on several SSHRC grants including research‐creation, he has organized and coordinated many successful initiatives in the arts. Glen is a senior researcher in Emily Carr’s Social and Interactive Media Research Centre (SIM), focusing on new media platforms that link scholars, artists, and audiences across cultural and geographical distances. Recently he has been developing a qualitative study of SSHRC’s research‐creation grants. 

Research‐creation projects integrate creative and intellectual research activities. The label is somewhat novel but this form of scholarship is not. Researchers and creators working in fine arts faculties have long known that their work is a unique category in academia, while funding agencies have only recently begun to recognize this. The aim of this special initiative is to provide researchers with practical tools that will assist in the development of funding proposals to capitalize on this trend. The scope goes well beyond preparing grant applications, however.  

ORIS hosted an introductory session facilitated remotely by Ashok and Glen. They provided participants with information and preliminary tasks to work on leading up to the main workshops in April. At the end of April, Ashok and Glen will be on campus for a two day session to stimulate, encourage, and challenge participants through innovative exercises, concrete anecdotes, and a variety of other tailored sessions designed to help navigate this emerging landscape. Building on the notion of Research‐Creation of new and specialized knowledge, Ashok and Glen are interested in discussing projects that deal with Indigenous issues in research‐creation, so participants engaged in these areas are particularly encouraged to attend. 

Matthew Letts (Interim AVPR) attend the attended the annual Alberta Gambling Research Institute conference in Banff as a Board Member and Poster Adjudicator. Rhys Stevens (library) also attended as Board Member. Rob Williams (Health Sciences) played a key role in organizing the international conference, which also included presentations by Yale Belanger (Native American Studies); Darren Christensen, Bonnie Lee and Claudia Steinke (Health Sciences), among others from the U of L.  David Euston (Neuroscience) also attended.   The Director of the Board is Seamus O’Shea. 

ON THE HORIZON

May 

The Brenda Milner Lecture Series, organized by the graduate students at the CCBN, will host Dr. Freda Miller (University of Toronto) as the keynote speaker and guest of honour.  A public lecture will be held on May 6 at the Lethbridge Lodge Hotel.  

Institute for Child and Youth Studies will be hosting a conference on “Mapping the Landscapes of Childhood II.” The conference runs from May 8 to 10.  Additional details are available here: https://www.uleth.ca/conreg/icys/

The Department of Modern Languages is hosting the “Highway 2 Conference: Making Inroads” in May.  This conference brings together academics in and beyond the Highway 2 corridor who work in languages, art, literature, and culture.  

June 

Paul Vasey (Psychology) is organizing a conference entitled “The Puzzle of Sexual Orientation: What is it and how does it work?”  The conference will be held on campus. 

August 

Claudia Malacrida (Sociology) is organizing a conference on “Controlling Sexuality and Reproduction: Past and Present,” planned for August 12‐14, 2015. This conference seeks to explore and challenge historical and current efforts to control and marginalize certain kinds of sex and reproduction, and to illuminate commonalities and differences amongst these various efforts to police sexual, reproductive and family lives.
