Club Sports Team Profiles at Lone Star College-Tomball Submitted by Jason Brandolini ____________________________________________________________________________________

Men’s Basketball The Men’s sport team had a very turbulent year with grades and school attendance which really stood out over the very successful on court year that they had.

The young men were a mix of previous year’s players and several new ones who immediately gelled and worked tirelessly to make a very strong team, with a deep bench. The team won continuously taking 2nd place in the fall, and 3rd in the spring with a very large number of teams. Both times the Timberwolves made it to the finals only to fall just short of the championship trophy.

Coaches DeJesus & Joseph worked to ensure the student athletes attended all required, and even beyond, the Student Life requirements, and community service, but most especially study hall. However, many of the student athletes dropped classes and failed, or received below passing grades making a large portion of the team ineligible at the end of the AY to be able to qualify to play in the fall of AY17-18.

Women’s Basketball The Lady Timberwolves had an excellent year overall with improved play and solidarity in the spring. The team fielded 12 women student athletes initially, only 2 returners.

Head Coach Chris DeJesus and Assistant Coach Randy Johnson worked tirelessly with the Women’s team to sharpen skills and understanding of rules of the game

During the fall semester the Women had a great season winning 2nd place in the regular season standings and taking 3rd overall in the SCC playoffs. The team was the most active with participation in required Student Life events as well as completing in both fall and spring their community service.

Spring 2017 semester saw even more synergy and even more competitive play with higher scoring games. The Lady Timberwolves did not finish as high with the regular season taking 4th position (2nd with LSC teams), and finished with a 2nd place overall finish in the SCC spring tournament.

The end of the AY did not fare as well on the Women’s Club Team as it did in the end of fall, with two players not being eligible for play due to grades for the start of the next academic year.

Page 10: Office of Student LIfe LOne Star college-Tomball … of...Page | 4 Office of Student Life’s Support of Student Organizations at Lone Star College-Tomball _____ Student Organization

Page | 9

Volleyball For the first time in over three full academic years, the number one ranked Lady Timberwolves were forced to rebuild after all but one team member graduated or moved on. Coach Emily Robinson had to start fresh and build a small team of 8 players into a cohesive unit. Both semesters proved very difficult for the teams with the team taking 6th place in the fall, but making the SCC tournament only after another school’s team was determined ineligible, but lost in the playoffs. The spring was a better regular season performance, but due to a shortage of players for the SCC tournament cause the team to be disqualified and were out after they were not able to have enough players for the first round game.

The team lost more games in the fall semester than they had in the past 7 semesters combined, but went over .500 win percentage in the spring and had a 3rd place ranking going into the tournament.

The team had a horrendous showing during the monthly Student Government meetings, making only 2 out of the 8 meetings over the AY, and only one student, Alexis Bass, attended two of the 4 required activities/events for Student Life, and the team did not perform a community service in the fall, but did in the spring.

Coach Emily did not make a single event, and verbally quit, but has never offered a formal, written resignation, nor has she yet return several uniforms and pieces of equipment. A job posting yielded about a dozen applicants but have not yet received them at this time to review, but will do so with Shannon Marino and work to set up interviews for a new coach. Emily Robinson has been termed in the HR system.

The team will need new uniforms at a cost of about $300 as there may not be a complete set since these uniforms are two years old and fraying.

The team played extremely well the entire year, had a very good showing in the academic and volunteer side of things, but did not fulfill its’ obligation to the Club Sports requirements for participation in SGA, as well as at the Spring Involvement Fair.

Men’s Soccer The Men’s Club Soccer Sport team had a better 2016-17 year overall, with a completely brand new set of student athletes, who also benefited from a new set of home and away jerseys that were purchased by the Coaching staff. They were able to make the SCC playoffs during the spring semester, and ended up taking 4th place.

There were some issues all to do with the lack of participation from the coaching staff and student athletes. Assistant Coach Vic Martinez was able to make it to two of the four events (Fall Welcome Week and Spring Involvement Fair), but missed the other two required events, and Coach Tim Grove did not appear or participate in any of them. On three of the four events two, or three, student athletes came and worked the tables, but not for the full time.

It will be required upon agreement with Shannon Marino that all student athletes will watch all the required videos at the beginning of the season(s) with her and my presence as well as be verbally told and sign documentation that they understand their expectations and obligations.

Though no official word has come through System Office as of yet, it is likely no campus will carry Assistant Coaches, thus eliminating the 1 assistance coach position with Men’s Club Soccer Team.

Additional Information Attendance by family and friends remains high at the men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball home games, but very little attendance by students, faculty, and staff. The game times are generally after 6pm for the home games when there are few students on campus, except for those who are attending evening classes. Despite this the teams still in total were able to have over 650 people attend all home games for each of the four Club Sports.

System Office conducted an in-depth audit to all of LSC Club Sports and Intramurals/Rec Sports programs to see how each campus operated, budgets, and adherence to Title IX. Findings and recommendations were made, and currently discussions are underway in regards to what changes will take place, and when, to make all campuses adhere to a more universal set of policies and procedures.

The upcoming 2017-2018 AY will also see a raising of the requirements for student-athletes to be enrolled in a minimum of nine credit hours per semester in which that student is trying out, and playing for a Club Sport team. This will cover the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters.

Intramurals

This past AY saw considerable more participation and activity from on campus students who took part in more activities, more frequently.

Last year, according to attendance records, about 2800 students, participated in a variety of on and off campus activities and events, that were both active/physical participation and otherwise.

Co-Ed soccer, flag football, volleyball, badminton, racquetball, and basketball, remain the big draws for the students, with a regular group of about 40 or so particular students continually participating each and every week.

For students who like to keep their competition and their physical fitness separate, the Intramural program did offer movies night. The game night did not come off after heavy rains one night kept most people from coming to campus to participate and a second night was scrubbed due to another event that was going on that coincided with some of the students needing to be at the other event.

Will continue to work on posting and advertising for Welcome Week and Involvement Fair, as well as signage and email blast for other club and non-team sports, as well as other activities and events. In the Wellness Center North Hallway there is a dedicated cork board area for Rec/Intramural activities as well as one in the cardio room of the Wellness Center.

Working this summer to create more on and off campus gatherings and events, i.e. speed dating, Win Lose or Draw, team scavenger hunt, movie or social night out, to try to get more involvement for the students.

Participants were asked to rate their overall event satisfaction on a 1-5 scale, with 1 being “Not satisfied” and 5 being “Very satisfied”.

Reasons given for their ratings include: • because it was fun • Few events I have attended have been fun and very well organized, but I haven't been to enough to

vouch for all of them:) • Lone Star offers more than what I expected from a community college. • it was fun, and great way to relax. • i felt exclude from the event, even though I was there. • Idk it was pretty cool ig. I thought it was dumb tho that y'all made us visit a certian amount of stands

before we could get the food. I wouldve gone and looked at the stands anyway. • Because I enjoyed being part of the event since I couldn't join any events due to becoming a freshman

during my senior year at high school. • You guys did a great job! • I was told college would be boring but I actually had a lot of fun this semester. • I loved a lot of the activities, but sometimes it seemed ill prepared • All events attended were well organized, advertised and I had a good time at them. Student Life

members have made their presence know through out the semester and have encouraged all to get involved.

• I was sad we didn't really do anything for either finals week this year. • It was a lot of fun to participate but sometimes was confusing as to where to go • Friendly staff and great freebies!

If yes, which ones? • Basketball • Choir, Tennis • Inkling • Chancellor Fellows, Honors College (if these count?) • Music Club • Phi Theta Kappa • HCSO, PTK, NMUN • Music • TRIO • TRIO and Phi Theta Kappa • Drama Club • Trio

If no, why not?

• Full time employment and full time student. I find that because I work traditional work hours and because of age I am not interested in participation of any

• Need more information on these clubs, hours of meetings, locations, what is the objective of each club, their affiliation etc.

• i have just not had the time,i work full time in addition to being a full time student. • I didnt have time to go to one for 2 reasons: 1.) I was swamped in homework (6 classes) 2.) I live in

montgomery and the drive is too long. • Because my parents would like to see if I could perform better in my classes without joining any

clubs at the moment, maybe I will join in a club in the next fall. • I don't socialize. It's just not my thing I only do it because I have to. • I didn't have time this semester but next semester I am going to join one. • I have not enough information about it.

Participants were asked to rate how important they feel campus involvement is on a 1-5 scale, with 1 being “Not important

at all” and 5 being “Very important”. Reasons for ratings given include:

• Caring • Student life is important, but studying is usually more important. Sometimes classes need to come

first! • We are the life of the campus. The activities give us the full college experience. • A student should have a well rounded experience not just classes. • Because although it is nice, my grades are the most important thing to me. • Because I feel like it. • Like I said I don't socialize I find it hard to start a conversation. • You should always try to be involved in something so that way you can make life long friends • Being involved at school creates a closer tie to the college experience and helps more people stay

in school • Its important to get involved to both keep you motivated about school and to put on your college

apps when you apply to a 4 year university • I like to be involved, but it is sometimes difficult with class schedules and outside responsibilities. • It looks very good on resumes and shows people that you are a well rounded student. I think

volunteering and participating in activities is key to student success and networking. • You make life long relationships and build important skills by being involved outside of class. It

makes the campus feel less like school • I think it is important for a student to create social relationships and it allow looks good to

universities. • The more connected you are on campus you are the more networking skills you obtain.

Open Ended Questions What programs or events would you like to see the Office of Student Life host on campus?

• Not interested in any at all since anything takes place during my work hours • Idk • I cant think of any at this time • More guest speakers, or music acts. • Something that celebrates the diverse culture of different students in the school, that will be all

inclusive to everyone including foreigners like me who still have a lot to understand. • A video game tournament for many people to either join in the fun or have a good laugh while watching

the tournament. • A law club maybe • Anything with free food. • Speech classes and leadership • More of the full involvement fairs. Bringing in the different activities that students can be a part of, and

giving them time to reach out to the students • More free food :) and finals week events with puppies! • Host Information sessions. We can focus on celebrating for example Hispanic Heritage Month, Black

History month etc. • I did hear that one year they had massage therapists come by during finals week, that'd be cool to see. I

don't know if that counts XD • day for student parents and their children • Something to do with artwork, like painting on a canvas.

What do you feel should be the Student Government Association's main priority throughout the year?

• NA • Idk • Creating more student volunteer opportunities! • I am not a fan of hovernment. • Share more information on their activities. • The students • Informing the students on the benefits of being involved in government, and sharing their opinions. Also

to encourage voting due to the low-voter turnout • No opinion • Making student feel less stressful for their year at Lone Star • Not sure. • I'm not sure how that works so I am not sure exactly what they do. • Keeping students up to date on what is going on in the political world. • Keep students informed • The students and their comfort and safety around campus
