• The Medication Back-Up is an employee assigned to administer prescribed medications to students in the absence of the school nurse.
• This employee must be trained in medication administration procedures by the school nurse.
• The Medication Back-Up should only be utilized in infrequent and non-routine circumstances.
• Location of Medication Keys
• Location of Medications
• Medication Book
• OHS contact x6368
• Pharmacy Labeled Bottle
• Healthcare Provider’s Order
• Oral medications
• Inhalers
(that don’t require a nursing assessment)
• Auto-Injector Epinephrine
(if trained)
• Discretionary Medications
• Medication via Nebulizer or Injection
• Any other medications that do not have:
- Pharmacy Labeled Bottle
- Valid Healthcare Provider’s Order
• Oxygen by nasal cannula or mask
• Oral medication requiring dose calculation, pill to be crushed or cut
• Rectal Diastat
• Insulin, Glucagon

• Give full attention to the task of medication administration
