Hoy, hay algunos paisajes a los que nos terminamos acostumbrando de tanto verlos u oírlos. El gran riesgo del acostumbramiento es la indiferencia: ya nada nos causa asombro, ni nos estremece, ni nos cuestiona... Algo así puede pasarnos con el triste paisaje que asoma cada vez con más fuerza en nuestras calles (gente de toda edad pidiendo o revolviendo la basura, durmiendo en las esquinas…) y en nuestro mundo (terrorismo, guerras…). Con el acostumbramiento viene la indiferencia: no nos interesan sus vidas, sus historias, sus necesidades, ni su futuro. Sin embargo, es el paisaje que nos rodea y nosotros, queramos verlo o no, formamos parte de él. —A este corazón acostumbrado viene a despertarlo y rescatarlo del mal de la indiferencia la invitación de la Iglesia al ayuno: un ayuno que debe partir del amor y llevarnos a un amor más grande. El ayuno que Dios quiere es “no dar la espalda al hermano”. ¡Ayunar desde la solidaridad! Hoy solo se puede ayunar trabajando para que otros no “ayunen”.

(Città del Vaticano, Vatican) Today, there are some landscapes we end up getting used to see and hear. The big risk of getting accustomed is indifference: we are not surprised anymore by anything; nothing can give us a shake or question us… Something similar may happen to us in relation with the sad landscape that sticks out harder and harder in our streets (people of all ages begging or stirring the garbage, sleeping in the street corners…) and in our world (terrorism, war…). After our getting accustomed comes indifference: we can’t care less about their lives, their history or their future. However, this is the landscape around us and we, like it or not, are part of it. _This accustomed heart of ours is waken up and rescued from the evil of indifference by the Church’s invitation to fasting: fasting that springs out of love and that takes us to a higher love. The fasting that God wants is not “turning our back to our brethren”. Fasting from the standpoint of solidarity! Today we can only fast toiling to stop others from fasting.
