The company is unique in that it represents both a payer and a provider, offering all-inclusive health coverage and services for the elderly, the chronically ill, disabled individuals and others. CenterLight serves approximately thousands of members including the largest PACE plan across New York, and operates 13 facilities, including nursing homes and therapy centers. The healthcare industry is a volatile one these days. Factors such as constantly changing compliance regulations, advanced treatment options, and a rapidly aging population are combining to create an influx of data that must be appropriately managed, accessed, and stored. Since the 1980’s CenterLight had assigned these data tasks to a homegrown system called eChamp, but by 2014, the company knew it was time for change. CenterLight embarked on a transformation project which would replace eChamp with best of breed products and create a bus which allowed all of these systems to talk to one another. Making member data more manageable and accessible When Raffaele joined CenterLight there was no concept of a data warehouse system. The system in place was effectively a data store which allowed access to the eChamp data since it could not be accesseddirectly from other systems. “The strategy,” says Raff, “was to align better with the business and attack the project using Agile Methodology. We ran monthly sprints that delivered results to the business quickly and allowed us to react based on feedback.” While the company was gaining more functional solutions for working with its critical member and provider information, there was still the matter of integrating that data into the data warehouse. Instead of funneling directly from a single source, data would now be coming from multiple applications, in a variety of formats-and at a greater volume. CenterLight needed a tool that could handle these needs efficiently, while ensuring high data quality. Why Talend? After briefly considering a handful of data integration solutions, CenterLight quickly settled on Talend as the best option. Talend not only accommodated all of CenterLight’s integration needs, but it was also far more affordable and easier to use. “Talend can simplify and parse complex XML providing fast results. Talend is so easy to use, all of our ETL developers have been able to learn the tool and come up to speed in no time.” The team implemented Talend through an Agile development process, where projects are tackled in short sprints and then assessed before the next phase is rolled out. In the long run, the company felt that an Agile approach provides great value for CenterLight because it helps the company ensure that business users are getting what they need after each phase.

Making member data more manageable and accessibleWhen Raffaele joined CenterLight there was no concept of a data warehouse system. The system in place was effectively a data store which allowed access to the eChamp data since it could not be accesseddirectly from other systems. “The strategy,” says Raff, “was to align better with the business and attack

the project using Agile Methodology. We ran monthly sprints that delivered results to the business quickly and allowed us to react based on feedback.”

While the company was gaining more functional solutions for working with its critical member and provider information, there was still the matter of integrating that data into the data warehouse. Instead of funneling directly from a single source, data would now be coming from multiple applications, in a variety of formats-and at a greater volume. CenterLight needed a tool that could handle these needs efficiently, while ensuring high data quality.

Planning patient assessment timelines and predicting member behaviorsOne of the most significant results CenterLight has seen thus far using Talend is an improvement in data quality. As data was migrated off the legacy eChamp system and into new applications, the team noted numerous inaccuracies in the data. “For example,” says Raff, “keeping current information for a provider ensures that

invoices are paid quickly and accurately improving provider retention.” To improve data quality now circulating between the data warehouse and each separate application, CenterLight created hubs for both provider and member data. Using Talend Data Integration, data is now funneled from eChamp Salesforce and the new claims processing system into each hub, where it is translated into a consistent format. In the provider hub, data is then weighed against a verified provider database from Enclarity (Lexus Nexus), after which any inaccuracies are amended and duplicates are removed. The member hub follows a similar process, targeting demographic data using a product called Melissa Data to check for inaccuracies.

Predictive analytics is another benefit for CenterLight. Because Talend now delivers a more holistic view of member data, the Business Intelligence team can look for patterns that predict how members and providers will react to changes. They can then work with nurse managers and other care providers to focus on retaining those members because it’s far easier to improve existing relationships with members than to recruit new ones in a highly regulated environment.

Planning patient assessment timelines and predicting member behaviorsIn the course of the next year, CenterLight is looking to expand its use of Talend to include Master Data Management.

The plan is to create a data governance model for providers and members that would enablethe team to spot data records with a certain level of inaccuracy and flag them for further attention.

“Overall, we have been extremely satisfied with Talend. We’re excited to see what we can do next.”
