Dear All,
As you will all be aware the 4 August 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the dayBritain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history – the First World War – withfighting continuing until the 11 November 1918, Armistice Day; and although 82% ofthose who put on a uniform between 1914 and 1918 survived, many returned withterrible wounds either physical or emotional or both. It was the war that was to end allwars which we sadly know was not the case and fighting continues across the world.
In all three churches in the Benefice of Badsey with Aldington, Offenhamand Bretforton, some form of Commemoration will be (or has alreadybeen) held. Offenham held its ‘Hats Off to our Boys’ Flower Festival at
the beginning of July with my thanks to Offenham Floral Art andall those organisations in the village which were
involved. Bretforton will be holding aCommemoration Service in Church at
6.30 on Sunday 3 August. AndBadsey Church as part of theFestival of Churches will be hosting
displays over the first twoweekends in September withthanks to The Badsey Society andothers who are organising theevent.
It’s important that these eventsare not seen as a celebration in any
way, but they are very much a way ofremembering and commemorating the event and paying tribute to those who gave somuch, and it must also be remembered that people on both sides of the conflict wereaffected.
War, I fear, will be with us as long as human kind exists but I pray for a time when it willbe no more and that God’s Kingdom will be seen here on earth in the nature of Love,Compassion, Justice and Freedom.

Fewer Church Services at Offenham from SeptemberDue to a decrease in the numbers of regularworshippers, and to save on heating costs, the PCChave decided that from September Offenham Churchwill hold services only on the first and secondSunday of each month. This includes Baptisms.
It does not affect Funerals,Weddings or any FestivalServices during the year, such as MotheringSunday, Easter and Christmas; RemembranceSunday is usually the second Sunday ofNovember and will also be unaffected.
Holy Communion at 8am and COFE Service at 11am. Eucharist at 11am.
Whilst there may not be services in St Mary and St Milburgh on the third and fourth (and theoccasional fifth) Sunday of each month, Offenham is part of a benefice and everyone’s welcome atthe other services held across the benefice (see opposite).

The ladies were approached by theOffenham PCC earlier this year toconsider putting on a Church FlowerFestival as an alternative fund raisingevent to their annual fete. The idea wasput forward that we could do a tributefestival to mark the centenary of WorldWar One. A different challenge to thenormal "pretty" flower festivals of the past!
So the seed was set and the ladies hadseveral meetings to throw ideas around. The enthusiasm gained momentum andsoon we had things in place. We wantedto involve some other village groups andwere delighted when the Youth Clubagreed to decorate the tall archway overthe entrance gate. A good thing too, asour ladies are a bit long in the tooth nowfor arranging off ladders!!! They did agrand job using a red, white and bluetheme. We then spoke to the leaders ofthe Brownie Group who were also verykeen to help. One of our members cameup with the idea of cutting squares out oflarge water containers, getting thempainted in blue and then the girls were
shown how to place a small arrangement, also in red, white and blue inside thecontainer to make them look like lanterns. We mounted 23 of these up each side ofthe pathway on metals stands, made forus by Phil Gilman another villager willingto help. This created a lovely welcome toour visitors, and we had lots of commentsabout the effectiveness of these. We thenasked the primary school head teacher ifthe children could become involved andwe came up with the idea of themproducing some "Prayer Posies", as theyhad been learning about wartime activitiesand they understood how the lossescould have a big impact on a smallcommunity. Two ladies went into schoolon the Wednesday afternoon and a groupof 22 pupils were shown how to create asmall posy, again in red, white and blue. They were all very keen to get going andproduced from very good work. They hadprepared their own individual prayerwhich we mounted on a stick and placedinto their flowers. These were thendisplayed on the benches in front of thechoir stalls in the church. This proved tobe a very moving experience for many
visitors as they were amazed at theefforts of the children, both with theposies and their own words.
We got started on the Thursdaymorning with setting up props etc
and the flowers came in on Fridaymorning. A great time was had by
all, with plenty of tea and coffeeprovided. The results of thishard work was stunning, therewas some very imaginativeand evocative designsproduced, the Church lookedamazing!

We also had several stalls on the grassoutside the Church which proved verypopular, they included cakes, plants, tombola, local produce, jewellery andglassware (again made by other villagers).
The ladies of the Women's Section of theRoyal British Legion also supported us bypreparing lunches and tea and cakes forour visitors to enjoy. So we achieved avery nice village day with lots of visitorscoming to see our hard work.
We received some wonderful commentsabout the standard of the floral art workand hopefully managed to recruit a fewnew members in the process.
The Church was delighted to find out thatthe figure raised for the upkeep of ourbeautiful Church was just over £2000!!
Well done to everyone involved with theproject.
