Students• 3rd – 5th graders• Gifted and talented (higher IQ and

developmental level than “average” students)• Any socioeconomic level• High motivation to learn through both

auditory and visual learning styles• Large amount of existing knowledge

Objectives• Upon completion of this project, “Off to the

Endocrine System We Go,” students will be able to identify the body parts of the endocrine system by choosing the correct picture that corresponds with the given body part.

• Students will also be able to correctly answer 75% of a set number of questions about the endocrine system using only the PowerPoint.

Standards addressed: 3.2.4, 3.6.1, 5.4.9

Learning Environment• Individually• At a computer station• In a place where the students will be able to

talk quietly to themselves without bothering anyone else

Today, we’re going to learn about the endocrine system. You were already given some basic information about this body system, but you’ll learn some more detailed information today.

Pay close attention, as there will be a matching game later on and a quiz at the end!

Now, let’s get ready to learn!

Hypothalamus• Controls the pituitary gland and work with it to

secrete many different hormones• Links the nervous system to the endocrine system• Consists of neurons with a rich blood supply• Regulates homeostasis

Page 11: Off to the Endocrine System We Go! Kalyn Deno EDCI 270 0601 TeachersStudents.

Pituitary Gland• Controlled by the hypothalamus• Called the “master gland”• Works with the hypothalamus to secrete many

different hormones• Considered the most important part of the endocrine

system

Page 12: Off to the Endocrine System We Go! Kalyn Deno EDCI 270 0601 TeachersStudents.

Pineal Gland• Located in the middle of the brain• Stimulated by nerves from the eyes• Secretes melatonin, which helps to regulate the

wake-sleep cycle• Melatonin also depressed the activity of the gonads

(ovaries and testes)

Page 13: Off to the Endocrine System We Go! Kalyn Deno EDCI 270 0601 TeachersStudents.

Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands• The thyroid gland is located in the front part of the lower neck• It produces thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which help control

the rate at which cells burn fuels from food to produce energy• It also regulates body temperature• The parathyroid glands—four tiny glands attached to the

thyroid gland—function together

So far, you’ve learned about the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the pineal gland, and the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Now, let’s learn about the adrenal glands, the pancreas, the ovaries, and the testes.

Keep up the good work! You’re doing a great job!

Page 15: Off to the Endocrine System We Go! Kalyn Deno EDCI 270 0601 TeachersStudents.

Adrenal Glands• There are two adrenal glands—one on top of each

kidney• Each adrenal gland has two parts—the outer part

(adrenal cortex) and the inner part (adrenal medulla)• The cortex produces hormones called corticosteroids• The medulla produces hormones called

catecholamines

Pancreas• Serves as both a ducted and a ductless gland• Secretes digestive enzymes into the small

intestine• Its islets of Langerhans secrete insulin and

glucagon, which help to regulate the blood sugar level

Ovaries• Female gonads• Located in the pelvis• Produce eggs• Secrete estrogen

and progesterone
