Actors from the London Stage bring Macbeth to Notre DamenoTRE daME —

actors From The London Stage

(aFTLS), a self-directed ensemble of five profes-sional British actors, will present will iam Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the historic washington Hall on the campus of the University of notre dame at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11, 12, and 13. These performanc-es are part of a national tour for this production with stops at Texas a&M University, Valparaiso University, Principia college, Vassar college, the University of wyoming, and the University of north carolina — charlotte.

in Macbeth, Shakespeare’s famous witches plant an idea in the mind of a Scottish warrior and his power-hungry wife. Through blood and betray-al, the corrupted couple will uproot a nation and threaten the lives of thou-sands. Unless good men stand in the face of tyranny, “something wicked this way comes.” The infamous “Scottish play” is both a cau-tionary tale and a parable for our age. Macbeth is quick, raw, and remarkably relevant. Parental discretion is advised.

Members of the ensem-ble include aFTLS tour veterans Michael Palmer (Macbeth, English doctor,

Murderer) and charles armstrong (duncan – King of Scotland, Macduff, angus, Second witch,

Murderer). Joining them will be annie aldington (donalbain, Ross, Menteth, Fleance, Lady Macbeth,

Third witch), Joanna Bending (Bloody Soldier, old Man, Malcolm, cathness, Lady Macduff, First witch, Murderer, gentlewoman), and Ben warwick (Banquo, Lennox, Seyward, Son of Macduff, Scottish doctor, Porter).

actors From The London Stage is the nation-al outreach program of Shakespeare at notre dame. Founded by Homer “Murph” Swander and world-renowned actor Sir Patrick Stewart, aFTLS celebrates its 40th anniver-sary in 2015.

Both a unique educa-tional program and an actor-driven tour de force, aFTLS actors hail from such prestigious companies

as Shakespeare’s globe, the national Theatre of great Britain, and the Royal Shakespeare company. during their weeklong residency, aFTLS actors not only perform a full-length Shakespearean play but also visit dozens of class-rooms. Students and facul-ty witness extraordinary performances and work with artists from some of the world’s most important theatre companies.

don’t miss the frighten-ing fun of Macbeth from actors From The London Stage. There will be three performances: wednesday, Feb. 11; Thursday, Feb. 12; and Friday, February 13, 2015. all performances are at 7:30pm Eastern daylight Time. washington Hall is located on the campus of the University of notre dame. individual tickets are $22, student tickets are $12, and children under 18 are free with a paid adult (limit five). New this year: Scholastic’s After Party – Glow in the Art

7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015 at Warner Gallery

Admission: $5, open to all students in grades 9-12

For 92 years, The Scholastic art & writing award program has sought to encourage, foster, and reward creativity in our nation’s classrooms and to confer recognition on emerging talent. The Michiana region, which covers 18 counties, has participated for decades, beginning in the Tea Room of the former Robertson’s department Store in down-town South Bend.

Today, the Scholastic art awards exhibition is one of the best-attended exhibitions at the SBMa. approximately 687 indi-vidual works appear in this year’s exhibition, selected from over 3100 digital sub-missions by over 1,800 stu-dents, seventh through 12th grade in over 100 area schools.

The awards represent the most comprehensive national annual assessment of the creative spirit among american teens. Three core values have not changed since its inception: freedom

of expression, a blind adju-dication process, and work criteria based on originali-ty, technical proficiency, and emergence of personal voice. gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention designations are awarded, and five works are selected out of the gold Key awards as american Vision nominees, repre-senting the “Best in Show.”

digital images of all of the gold Key awards are sent on to national adjudication in new York city. award recipients at

the national level are invit-ed to participate in the awards ceremony held at carnegie Hall, have their work shown in noted gal-leries, attend workshops, be considered for scholar-ships, and have their names included in the new York Times article covering the Scholastic art awards.

The exhibition is one month in duration. gallery hours are wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

WHAT DO YOUR MEDICARE BENEFITS PAY FOR? Medicare began in 1965 to be a national social insurance program that allowed people age

65 and older and the disabled to have medical insurance coverage. Over the years, Medicare has made many additions to the coverage they offer. These include new managed care plans as well as parts A,B, C and D. There are many options available and

understanding the costs and coverage of each plan is an important part of the process.

Medicare A covers the following services: •HospitalStay-semiprivateroom,food,pharmacy,medications,servicesrendered whileinthehospital. •Hospice •HomeHealthCare •SkilledNursingServices–onlyskillednursingorrehabilitativecare. CustodialnursingservicesarenotcoveredbymedicareA.Although skilled nursing services and rehabilitative services are available under the Part A program. If you are in a Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare Plan, you may have different rules, but your plan must give you at least the same coverage as Medicare A.

However, these plans often have different deductible amounts. It is beneficial to compare these deduct-ibles before signing up for your Medicare coverage.

February Class SpotlightUpcoming events at the

Curious Kids’ Discovery ZoneFalafel funi catered my first party in

a long time the other night. when coming up

with the menu, i wanted to have a consistent theme that was both fairly simple to prepare and impressive.

The hosts of the event aren’t vegan, so didn’t want the dishes to read veg too loudly. i decided going with a Mediterranean menu which worked out really well. The crown jewel of the menu were the falafel

sliders served with a cucumber relish and my favorite, tahini dressing.

The falafel sliders are a favorite for heavy ap spreads and late night snacks at wedding recep-tions. They keep and reheat well, can be served in a bun, a pita, a bed of cous-cous, or, my personal favorite, on a salad with tahini dressing. Pretty much everyone who tries falafel loves it, so they go

over really well. i found the original recipe for this dish in The New Better Homes and Garden Cookbook and have modi-fied it over the years.

i use cooked millet instead of just soaking the grain with the dry falafel mix, like the original reci-pe called for. i also mix in some milled flax seed. i find these additions really help to bind the falafel bet-ter. of course the key steps

in pan frying any type of slider, burger, or

fritter are: letting the oil get hot enough to bubble, pat-ting the batter down a bit so it’s a compact patty, and waiting until the first side is cooked enough before flipping.

For a crowd pleasing appetizer, serve on a sliced open dinner roll topped with the same balsamic cucumber dressing i used last weekend. The relish freshens it up and a side of tahini dressing never hurts!

Kat BarryKat's Hot TalkFalafel Millet Sliders

Yield: about 2 dozen sliders

For the falafel:2 cups dry falafel mix¼ cup cooked millet¼ cup milled flax seed1 1/3 cups cold watergrapeseed, canola, or vegetable oil for frying

For the relish:1 ¼ cup peeled and diced cucumber (about 1)¾ cup green pepper, diced½ cup thinly sliced green onions¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped1 cloves garlic, minced1 ½ tablespoons extra virgin olive oil1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar½ tablespoon red pepper flakes (optional)¼ teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)Black pepper to taste

in a large mixing bowl, mix together the falafel ingredients (falafel, millet, flax, and water). cover and let sit for at least a half an hour until the liquid is absorbed. Meanwhile, pepper all the veggies for the relish and place in a medium size mix-ing bowl.

in a small dish, whisk together the EVoo, balsamic, red pepper flakes, sea salt, and black pepper. Pour over relish, mix well and refrigerate.

Heat an electric skillet and fill with about ½ inch of oil. when oil starts to bubble, use a ¼ cup ice cream scoop to drop balls of batter into the hot oil. Flatten gently with the back of a turner. Turn down skillet heat to medium high and let patties fry for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown on the outside and firm in the middle. gently flip and fry another 5 minutes or so. cook time varies greatly depending on your skillet.

Place fully cooked patties on a paper towel lined plate and let cool a bit before stuffing buns, topping with relish, and securing with a toothpick.

THREE oaKS, Mich. — This Presidents day weekend Journeyman distillery will be releasing its limited edition Federalist 12 whiskey. This

special release rye whiskey closely resembles the origi-nal recipe george washington sipped himself. The whiskey takes its name from alexander Hamilton’s Federalist no. 12 essay, in which he wrote that a tax on whiskey “should tend to diminish the consumption of it,” and that “such an effect would be equally favorable to the agriculture, to the economy, to the morals, and to the health of the society.” during the whiskey Rebellion that followed, tax collectors would be tarred, whipped, and feathered.

The Tarred, whipped, and Feathered Release Party highlights the weekend. Events kick off with a Presidential Buffet dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday night.

The $10 admission fee includes a special dinner curated by chef Luke caenepeel and early access to bottle sales. Tickets will be available at the door.

The whiskey will be officially released to the public at noon on Saturday. Each bottle will cost $49.99 and owner Bill welter will be on hand to sign the bottles. The party will conclude with live music on Saturday night. Peter nye will be returning with special guest Keith Baumann to play at the party from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Last year nye brought the house down with his signature blend of folk and bluegrass.

with only 500 bottles available at the distillery, the whiskey will go quickly. “we only produce this whis-key once a year in honor of Presidents day. once it’s gone you’ll have to wait until next year to get some,” says owner Bill welter.

HaRBERT, Mich. —Thanks to a unani-mous vote by the

chikaming Township Board last november, the lit ice-skating rink at Harbert community Park has been open and opera-tional since early this year. The board voted to approve a $15,000 budget increase for the chikaming Township Park Board, which manages the Harbert community Park.

after last winter saw the parks budget suffer too many cuts to assemble and open the ice-skating rink, this year, a total of up to $5,000 has been allocated for the setup, take down and general maintenance of the rink. Local resident Rennie Burian and his son, alec, will do said mainte-nance.

Saturday, Feb. 21, there will be a s’mores grilling contest and ice-skating party hosted by the Harbert Business association as part of Harbor country’s

The Township Board encourages people from all over the area to come and

enjoy s’mores, refresh-ments, and the warm glow of one of the multiple fire pits. Entry forms for the s’mores grilling contest are available at the Township center.

other upcoming events include a Feb. 14 Valentine’s day skating party, a snow sculpture-oriented event, if condi-tions allow a community/family skating night, all planned for the upcoming weeks of February and the first week in March.

chikaming Township Board member Janet Schrader is excited to have the rink operating again and says that as long as temperatures cooperate, the rink will be open.

“we will have skating under the lights every Friday and Saturday night from 6 to 10 until March 7,” Schrader said.

The rink is free to the public and is open as long as weather permits. The township, at this time, does not provide skates for rent, but are currently accepting skate donations of all sizes.

THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR AND OTHER ERIC CARLE FAVORITESSaturday, February 14, 2015, 11 a.m. & 2 p.m.

$14 $14 $18The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites includes the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly, the fanciful account of Little Cloud’s travels through the sky, and The Mixed Up Chameleon’s discovery of his own unique nature. Directed and designed by Jim Morrow, who ranks among Canada’s most esteemed puppetry creators, the triple-bill show incorporates evocative original music by Nova Scotian composer Steven Naylor and innovative “black light” staging techniques that highlight Morrow’s stunning puppets and props. The works follow closely the books from which they are adapted, providing a new generation with a seamless entry into the world of theatre and music.

Advertising works best when scheduled with frequency.

An advertiser who runs one ad and waits for results is wasting money.

If an ad doesn’t stop and pull a reader in, it is often wasted.

Advertisers who constantly change the look and styles of their ads

lose the residual cumulative benefit of the ad schedule.

Don’t forget to communicate your advertising message with your employees, sales

personnel, merchandise buyers and even vendors.

All successful advertising need to make a point. If the reader has to work to determine what the point

is the ad is wasted.

Any ad that hasn’t set a goal is wasted. Ads aimed at driving

traffic look quite different then ads trying to change opinion or

to drive image.

Often, when an ad doesn’t work the finger is pointed at the media. Understanding what placement,

frequency and message will most appeal your customers is a valuable

and necessary learning process.

Some advertisers feel every inch of an ad must be used, such as 75 things

on sale in a two inch ad. It works best to make a simple single point.

An ad targeting brides that runs in Tuesday sports may not be as

affective as one in the Sunday bridal section. Fish where the fish are.

Advertising must reflect your businesses’s image.
