The Kay Keeney Local History and Genealogy Department is one of Poplar Bluff Public Library’s most unique features. Now, local genealogists and history buffs alike can stay in the know and discuss their hobby in the digital realm, thanks to the new blog, Genealogy @ The Library.Shon Griffin, Poplar Bluff Public

Library’s genealogy/interlibrary loan librarian, is the man behind the blog.

Through Genealogy @ The Library, Griffin aims to share “useful sites for research, local meetings, items added to the collection, and maybe a few random musings on genealogy and libraries.”“We hope to keep our genealogy

friends updated on events of interest connected to the library,” Griffin said about the blog in a recent post. “It might be a program announcement, a new title added to the Genealogy

Department, or maybe something just to make you think.”

Read under the stars this summerHope you’re not

afraid of the dark: this year’s sum-mer reading program revels in all the good things that go bump in the night. Children’s program Dream Big – READ and teens’ WE OWN THE NIGHT kick off at Poplar Bluff Pub-lic Library on June 1.

Participants will have chances to win a wide range of prizes, in-cluding three bikes, a Kindle Fire tablet and an animal adoption, by joining in on the fun and completing reading logs.

Be sure to visit the Li-brary beginning June 1 to register and pick up your summer read-ing kit with reading and event logs and a Dream Big tattoo!

Children experience a marked loss in learning over the summer. n The average stu-dent will lose about one month of in-struction over the summer.n Two thirds of all students experi-ence grade-level achievement gaps because they don’t learn enough over the summer.n Students who read over the summer not only come back to school with stronger reading skills than their peers, but they also write better, spell better, have larger vocabularies and have better con-trol of complex gram-matical construc-tion.
