Aloha and Welcome!
Aloha and a warm welcome to athletes and supporters visiting Maui for the 2016 XTERRA World
Championship. Congratulations on qualifying to race at this year’s XTERRA World Champs.
From its humble beginnings with 123 athletes on the beach at Wailea, Maui in 1996, the sport
now boasts a global footprint. There are athletes from 46 countries and 39 U.S. states who have
earned the right to race for the title of World Champion. Maui’s race course is one of the
toughest in the world and will test your skills and endurance on Hawaii’s legendary beaches and
trails.
We wish you great racing, much fun, and a wonderful stay on Maui and in the Hawaiian Islands!
Thank you for joining us.

*Sunscreen information
Help protect Hawaii’s reefs. Last year, Hawaii’s corals were devastated by a massive coral
bleaching event, which resulted in the loss of 50% of our corals. Scientists at the 2016
International Coral reef Symposium and the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress agreed on
the negative impacts of oxybenzone and other sunscreen chemicals on corals, and
recommended use be eliminated in areas with coral reefs.
We ask that you do not use sunscreen that contains oxybenzone (benzophenone-3; BP-3).
It has been shown to increase the rate of coral bleaching, and to cause deformities in coral
larvae, making them unable to swim, settle, or form new colonies.
Sunscreen chemicals wash off users when they enter the ocean, particularly if it is applied just
before getting in. Read the label on sunscreen to make sure that is does not include
oxybenzone. Preferred options include zinc oxide and titanium oxide.
Baggage Storage – is not available. Leave valuables at home.
Hotel check-out
If you are a guest of The Ritz-Carlton and are leaving the hotel on Sunday, you must check out

4c Cutting the course: short-cutting and/or cutting trail switchbacks on course is not

accurately as possible. All protests will be investigated. Because of the nature of XTERRA, it is not always possible to see
infractions. XTERRA courses are out of sight and marshalled only where necessary. In every case
there will need to be verification of the infraction. Officials will not be drawn into a “hear-say”
argument.
