ARTSY FARTSY LIVELY ART + CULTURE FOR SUMMER
Summer is my favourite season. People emerge from their cozy dens, ready to explore the world around them. And there is so much to discover in York Durham Headwaters (YDH). The charming villages, vibrant festivals and show-stopping art. Such a wonderfully vast array of choices!
To begin, a dash of art. Depending on my mood – is it
a folk art day or a national treasure day? – I visit one of
the region’s many galleries. The McMichael Canadian
Art Collection is a great place to start. I could gaze at
the architectural glory of the building all day long. Also,
it features works by Tom Thompson and his contem-
poraries, as well as First Nations, Métis and Inuit artists.
After strolling through the galleries, I clip-clop along the
winding outdoor pathways to the sculpture garden.
When I’m feeling somewhat intangible, a visit to the
Robert McLaughlin Gallery is just the ticket! It holds
the largest collection of works by the Painters Eleven
– Ontario’s first abstract art collective. The Station
Gallery has that vibrant buzz that comes from creative
collaboration. Housed in a vintage railway station, the
gallery hosts a bevy of working artists that use the studio
spaces and give public workshops.
Driving through YDH with the wind flowing through my
mane, I’m struck by the unique character of each small
town. For lakeside charm, I stop in Historic Port Perry
and browse the boutiques along the waterfront. To im-
press Big Red with a hearty meal in a gorgeous location,
I’ll suggest meeting in Main Street Unionville,
a simply beautiful street located in Markham. For some-
thing completely different, I gallop through Downtown
Orangeville, which has 55 enchanting wood sculptures
nestled within the tree-lined streets – not to mention
incredible shopping!
Our country was shaped by the automotive industry,
and the Canadian Automotive Museum tells the tale
with aplomb. A car enthusiast’s dream, the museum
boasts an extensive collection of Canadian and
European cars, and a captivating exhibit on Canada’s
auto-making history.
From an architectural perspective, the Hillary House
National Historic Site is worth a visit. And when you
consider that it holds the Koffler Museum of Medicine
with medical instruments dating back as far as the 1800s
– it’s a cultural double whammy! Need more history?
I also delight in visiting the Dufferin County Museum &
Archives which is filled with incredible artifacts that tell
the stories of Headwaters’ past. Another architectural
gem (a golden carrot, if you will) is the Sharon Temple
National Historic Site and Museum. This iconic land-
mark features historical exhibits, heritage herb gardens
and a picnic-perfect lawn.
To experience the sights, sounds and...ahem...smells of the
1800s, I visit the Black Creek Pioneer Village. The grain
barn is especially appealing with its intoxicating aroma of
fresh hay. For more old-time action, the Georgina Pioneer
Village depicts life between 1850 and 1920, with historical
buildings including a one-room schoolhouse and a
blacksmith shop that crafts #insta-worthy horseshoes.
At night, the YDH theatre scene sparkles with comedy and
mystery. I like to take in dinner and a show at the Herongate
Barn Dinner Theatre. Horses and humans alike adore the
clever refurbished dairy barn, and the
performances are on point!
Summer is festival season in YDH and this year’s line-up
does not disappoint. On July 22, I’ll be at the Alton Mill
Arts Centre Wine + Food Festival – the perfect storm of
gastronomy and art. I can almost taste the gourmet good-
ies and fruity wine now. Another treat for all five senses is
the Jambana One World Festival, which showcases art,
music and flavours from around the world. And of course,
it wouldn’t be summer without the TD Markham Jazz
Festival sending smooth sounds into the night sky.
Satisfy your culture cravings with YDH’s sophisticated –
yet friendly – offerings. Connect the dots to create
your ultimate summer art + culture getaway at
YorkDurhamHeadwaters.ca. Then saddle up and
head north for an unforgettable road trip adventure.

TREETOP ECO-ADVENTURE PARKZIPLINING AXE THROWING ARCHERY TAG
#visitYDH
There is a ton of cool stuff to do here that you just
can’t find in the concrete jungle.
As the resident daredevil, my friends look to me to
plan the trip – well, except for Chuckles. He’s more
of an indoor horse. But you should see him on a
zip-line. Man, that horse can fly! Treetop Eco-Ad-
venture Park has seven zip-lines where you can
hit speeds of 60km/hour. And if you’re stuck in a
car for an hour with three stinky friends, they also
have combat archery – which is like paintball but
with foam-tipped arrows. Not a bad way to release
tension, right? Oh, and if flying projectiles are your
jam, run – don’t walk – to BATL Pickering for a
round of axe throwing. It’s thrilling and
empowering, and there are coaches on hand to
help beginners, so you don’t have to worry about,
er...mishaps.
Um, new topic! One of my favourite things to do
in life is hitting the trails. Uxbridge is literally the
Trail Capital of Canada. My friends and I blaze our
way through the wicked network of trails on foot or
bike. For more action, we head up to Albion Hills
Conservation Area for over 50 kilometres of super
fast double-track and single-track mountain bike
trails. The views are so extraordinary...if you slow
down long enough to look.
I think summer is for making a splash. Which is
what the Rail Yard Wake Park is all about. It’s an
easy way to get into board sports like wakeboard-
ing. They use a cable system to pull riders so the
lake is completely boat-free, and beginners get
help from certified instructors. So, yeah Ma, it’s
totally safe! Another addictive water sport is stand-
up paddle boarding. Let’s call it SUP. You stand on a
board (kind of like a surf board, but thicker) and use
a paddle to motor through the water. Last summer,
my family went to Port Perry SUP to take on this
cool new sport...everyone from my 5-year-old
cousin to my 80-year-old granny had a blast. If you
wanna stay seated, that’s cool too! Rent a canoe
or kayak, and explore the sparkling waters of the
Island Lake Conservation Area.
Back on land, there is nothing like burning rubber
at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. I’m talking
extreme karting action AND you get to watch
celebrity drivers speed by on the legendary Grand
Prix Circuit track. And get this: after some high
performance on-track coaching, the gang and I will
take an adrenaline-charged hot lap with the Ron
Fellows Driving Experience.
Let’s be real. There are days when being outside
just won’t work. It could be too hot or too rainy. Or
you don’t want to wreck your flower girl dress be-
fore your auntie’s wedding even starts. Don’t worry.
There’s lots to do indoors, too. Like defying gravity
at Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Whitby or Vaughn.
Their wall-to-wall trampolines take dodgeball to a
new level! And speaking of levels, the HUB indoor
climbing centre is the biggest climbing gym in
Ontario. They’ve got lessons and supervised climb-
ing for beginners, and experts can try to conquer
the Dragon – a beast of a climb that ends with a
thrilling jump into a foam pit.
Can I tell you a secret? Sometimes I like to chill out
and go fishing. The gang and I will book a charter
from the Port Whitby Marina and fish for salmon
and trout. At the end of the day, we take the fish
home for the world’s freshest barbeque or charcoal
grill. Yum – so smoky and delicious!
So, break free from the city. Choose your own
adrenaline-soaked adventure at
YorkDurhamHeadwaters.ca. Then pack a bag,
make a playlist, and carpe diem. This is gonna
be your squad’s raddest summer ever!

A WORLD-CLASS GOLF HOLIDAY IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD
If you’re as passionate about golf as I am, you’ll
recognize the name of Doug Carrick – he’s
crafted award-winning courses across Canada
and around the world. We’ve got two
Carrick-designed courses in our region: the
challenging rolling greens of Osprey Valley Golf and the exquisitely creative layout of
Eagles Nest Golf Club. Trust me, these courses
will keep you on your toes. Bring your A-game
and a little luck, and you’ll love every swing!
My Aunt Henny-Penny used to say that a long
day on the links left her feeling “peckish”. When
I want a little nosh with my game, I visit the in-
ternationally recognized Angus Glen Golf Club.
It has two challenging 18-hole championship
golf courses – and offers a swanky afternoon
tea on the first Sunday of every month.
Look what I’ve done. I’ve mentioned food and
now I’m all hungry. But that’s the thing about
golf – it pairs well with friends and food.
When golfing with friends, I love Deer Creek Golf. Its North Course will challenge the pros,
while the South Course is friendlier for begin-
ners. We’ll play a round, then meet for drinks
and laughs on the patio at the Gem Room
Restaurant.
One of the best kept secrets about golf is that
when you play with your sweetie, the date lasts
all day! I like to treat my sweetheart to a game
They say that golf is an individual sport. I say that’s poppycock!
Hole-In-One Golf Courses For Players Of All Stripes By Chelsea Chicken
Why keep the fresh air, gorgeous vistas and delicious challenge of the game all to yourself? At York Durham Headwaters (YDH), we believe that when you share golf with friends and family, you share an unforgettable experience.
at Copper Creek, followed by a tête-à-tête in
the dining room. We’ll share tagliere for two
and a bottle of wine, and leave with stars in our
eyes. For a longer romantic retreat, we book
a getaway at the Hockley Valley Resort. The
18-hole course is set within the natural land-
scape and offers stunning views. After a day of
golf, we treat our tender muscles to a couple’s
massage and explore Adamo Estate Winery
before heading back to the resort and lingering
over a candlelit meal at Cabin. What could be
more perfect? Remember: the couple that golfs
together, stays together!
As you may have guessed, my love affair with
golf is lifelong. It started when I was a little
chicky following Mum and Dad as they played
around the world. I heartily recommend intro-
ducing your little ones to the sport too. We like
the Lynbrook Family Golf Centre where you
can play a full nine holes or challenge the fam
on the mini-golf course. Bathurst Glen has a
terrific family course that introduces kids to the
sport, building confidence without the pressure
of playing on a full course. And after twilight,
for every paid adult, one child plays free!
Golf. It’s a sport best shared with others. Design

When it comes to spirits, if we want authentic black strap rum and moonshine, we go to the Last Straw Distillery. The distillery tour is the bee’s knees – and so are the spirits! The thing is, moonshine gets Gatsby’s stomach rum-bling. After a tour, we always pull up to Asian Legend for the most delicate and delectable dim sum in town.
With spirits having their moment, the craft beer movement remains strong in YDH. One of my favourite breweries is the Old Flame Brewing Co. in Port Perry. Take the tour, smell the malts and hops, and taste the difference handcrafted makes. And while I’m in town, I always make time for beet salad at Marwan’s Global Bistro. It is unbeatable!
Now, with a name like Manantler, you know you’re in for an epic ride. The Manantler Craft Brewing Co. offers six signature suds and 25 other brews. I’m stuck on their explosive Seismic Narwhal. If old Papa Hemingway were here, this would be his beer.
Speaking of beer, it’s hard to believe you can improve on pizza, yeah? Allow me to intro-duce beer-infused pizza crust. Gatsby couldn’t
I’m a man of few words. Except when it comes to the outstanding local food and drink coming out of York Durham Headwaters (YDH). My man Gatsby and I are teaming up to cruise the region and relish all it offers. Buckle your seat-belts, rev up the jalopy and leave the wet blankets at home – summer’s here!
Back in the day, YDH was a hot spot for rum runners. What pairs well with giggle water? Yep – cheese. You better believe Gatsby and I will be all aboard the Boxcars & Beers: The Cheese Train for a curated cheese and craft beer tasting. We’ll disem-bark in Uxbridge for an additional tasting and tour of The Second Wedge Brewing Co.
While in town, we’ll grab a bison burger at the Urban Pantry Restaurant. Then browse the farmers’ market and pick up a new cheese board at The Passionate
Cook’s Essentials before we hop back on the train and head for home.
Our region is a beverage boom town. Craft breweries, wineries, cideries and distilleries are cropping up everywhere. It’s an exciting time for anybody that craves premium local ingredients in their booze! For the best of the best, I tackle the Rural Routes & Dirty Boots self-guided craft brewery tour which explores all the great brews and tasty treats in Durham. Gatsby and I plan to park our bikes and hit the road with the top down and the tunes cranked. We’ll sail through the region, stopping only to sample artisanal beers and ciders, with fresh charcuterie (just for me of course), fresh produce and bread.
During Prohibition, Grand Valley was infa-mous for being the wettest town in Ontario. The Grand Spirits Distillery is the first legal distillery in the region. Gatsby’s keen to sample their handcrafted whiskey and gin. Then we’ll head to Landman Gardens & Bakery for a farm fresh dinner in the Blackhouse. After dinner, it’s back to Grand Spirits. The joint hosts copacetic speakeasy vibe held in an old-time school house.
FanaticsFOODIE believe his taste buds when I took him to
Hungry Brew Hops. We paired their smoked duck pizza with the gastropub’s own lager and let me tell you – it was the cat’s pajamas.
As you can see, summer is one of the top four seasons to enjoy food and drink in YDH. But don’t be a sap. If you’re going to get zozzled on giggle water, call a taxi, make a date with Uber, have a designated driver (DD) or better yet, stay overnight at one of our lovely accommodations.
If you go for a DD, pay them in artisanal cheese. Trust me.
