PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Rotary Fellowships are a wonderful way for Rotarians and former Rotarians with mutual interests to

come together as Peter Spurgin who is the Gold Coast Commodore of the International Yachting

Fellowship of Rotarians told us last night. Several club members know Peter and Hugh Smith is a

member of IYFR. There are 54 in the Gold Coast IYFR and they enjoy regattas and social get togethers in

many places, the latest being Hobart.

The Fellowship of Cruising Rotarians has just been established and this should prove very popular.

Amongst many others, there is a Wine Appreciation Fellowship, a Skiing Fellowship, Motorcycle

Fellowship, Flying Fellowship which Vince Rehbein, a former member is in. Check the RI Fellowship

Groups for more if you are interested. 30,000 are in Fellowships worldwide so they are very popular.

Peter has been a Careflight pilot for many years so we will ask him to tell us about that sometime soon.

Do hope everyone will make an effort to attend next week and bring partners, friends and business

associates to hear Ray Stevens MP, Leader of Opposition Business in the Queensland Parliament speak

about “Gold Coast Future Perspectives”. This is a topic that we are all interested in as are many others in

our community. The invitation is included in this week’s Rotator so you can pass that on.

Thank you to those who are hosting our Lunches for 9 (or 12- special thanks to Tony and Nancy Stenton)

on Sunday. I am sure that everyone will enjoy the chance to catch up with one another over a shared

meal.

Marion

Scribe’s Report 16/06/2015

Chair Graham C opened the meeting at 6.15pm with the loyal toast and then Michael Irving proposed

an international toast to the Rotary Club of Walnut Creek Sunrise 25 Kms from San Francisco in

California.

President Marion then introduced Skye D’Almeida, Lea’s daughter , to the meeting. Skye told us she

was a Rotary exchange student from our club in 2000 and spent a year in France which she thoroughly

enjoyed. She is about to leave for a job in New York working for a non profit company in the area of

renewable energy and cleaner transportation.

Marion welcomed Travis, Lea’s son- in- law, and also welcomed Murray Bertram to the meeting. Our

guest speaker, Peter Spurgin was also introduced.

Treasurer Merv then took the floor with the proposed club dues for the coming Rotary year , suggested

to be $310, an increase of $10 on last year. Dinner fees will remain the same. A vote will be taken next

week.

PE Lea reminded us of Opera On the Mountain on Sunday 5 July at 12 noon. Cost is $85pp which

includes lunch, drink and the concert. The profits will go to The Institute of Glycomics. Lunches for eight

( or twelve) are on this Sunday- contact hosts for details. We have Ray Stevens as guest speaker next

week speaking on The Future Prospects of the Gold Coast. Members are encouraged to bring partners and

friends for this special night. Lea announced that the new board will get together on 30 June for an

informal discussion.

Marion reminded members of the Rotaract Changeover dinner on Saturday 4 July at Ferry Road Tavern at

6.00pm. Cost $40pp dress code- masquerade. Disaster Aid Australia has sent an additional 400 tents to

Nepal donated from Victoria and ROMAC raised $20,000 for Operation Cleft.

PeterO reminded us of the Country Music Weekend at Broadbeach this weekend and needed one spot

filled on the carousel roster.

Sergeant Tony Stenton gained funds from the fact the secret greeter was Travis, Lea’s son in law

.Graham C and Peter O were sporting new haircuts as was Lea and Allan had trouble balancing the books.

Murray B is away for six weeks and Duncan played golf with 78 chaplains , and lost. Lea’s table of eight

has expanded and Michael has completed his history of the club. Lea fell asleep at the Monday board

meeting and Tony G was fined for seeing the risqué musical , Miss Saigon.

Heads and tails Lea R Raffle Beth D.

Guest speaker Peter Spurgin is a member of the International Rotary Yachting Fellowship and this

month was Rotary Fellowship month. Rotary Fellowships began in the UK in 1920 with a group of

Rotarians sharing a common interest in Esperanto. There are now 60 international fellowships in many

fields such as flying, golf and even physicians. The objective is to enhance the Rotary experience and

there are now 35,000 members in 170 countries with active and former Rotarians and their spouses.

The Yachting Fellowship was founded in 1947 in the UK and has 3,000 members in 37 countries with an

Italian commodore. Australia has 12 fleets in every state, the Gold Coast chapter founded in 1972 and has

54 members. They have lots of outings and social events together and have monthly meetings at the

Southport Yacht Club.

Most members own power boats and the fellowship supports Sailability , having assisted in the purchase

of a new boat for the organisation. They have special events with wooden boats and even a steam boat.

Vote of thanks was offered by Tracy N who told us her father is a keen yachtsman.

Marion thanked our visitors and closed the meeting at 7.30pm

DAYS FOR GIRLS Days for Girls is a not for profit organisation assembling sustainable feminine hygiene kits which are sent to girls & women in over 75 countries. The use of the kits allows the girls to attend school rather than spending several days each month in isolation, vulnerable & missing valuable school days. This volunteer organisation is supported by many Rotary clubs, & in our district is championed by Mt Warning AM Club. You may have seen the Days for Girls stand at the District conference in Goondiwindi. Recently approximately 300 kits were taken to Nepal where volunteers trekked to remote communities to deliver the much need hygiene kits. Kits have also been taken to Africa this month by Australian nurses. I have been running workshops with some of my friends where we sew items for the kits such as hygiene shields & bags using our own fabric. The girls also use the bags on a daily basis as a school bag. Southport Rotary Club has generously made us a grant of $1000 to replenish our supplies of fabric, waterproof fabric & to buy other necessities for the kits, such as ziplock bags, washers, knickers, soaps etc. All of you travellers please save your little hotel soaps as these are included in the kits as part of the hygiene process. If you would like to contribute in any way please contact me. Roz Irving [email protected] 0407 145 529

Thanks from Tracy N Pres Marion and Peter Spurgin Thoughts for the week.

if you can't have midnight snack why do we have a light in the fridge ?? Can atheists get insurance for "acts of God?" Sailing – The fine art of getting wet and becoming ill, while going nowhere slowly at great expense.”

Why is a ship called a “she” Because

It takes a lot of paint to keep her good looking She shows her topsides and hides her

bottom It’s not the initial expense that breaks you, it’s the upkeep! When coming

into port, always heads for the buoys”

After docking a sailor goes into a nearby pub and orders a double. The bar tender refuses to get it

stating, "This is a singles bar!"

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat & drink

beer all day.

The mess officer was upset because the sailors were not eating the bread. Some of the sailors

complained that the bread was too hard. The officer said, "if the Mayflower crew on their voyage

had that bread, they would have eaten it down to the last crumb." A young sailor said," I believe

that, sir but this bread was fresher then!"
