Dear PCA

I would like to thank everyone at PCANSW for theterrific job they did conducting this year State Camp.

I had a fabulous time, as did everyone else I spoke toand you must be congratulated on the monumentaleffort of organising such an event. The new instructorsprovided all of the riders with excellent instruction andI’m sure everyone came away a better rider. A specialthank you also to Mrs Edwena Mitchell for herbeautiful cooking. I would also like to thank all of theriders for making camp so enjoyable.

Dear Pony Club

I am writing to thank you for the opportunity to attendthe State Camp held at Horsley Park. Eventing is mychosen discipline and I was lucky enough to beaccepted. As this was my first State Camp, I did notknow many people or what to expect. I had no needto be worried or concerned because the instructorswere brilliant, the facilities fantastic and everyone wasfriendly and willing to help in any way they could. I hada lot of fun and made some great new friends and amlooking forward to State Camp next year (hopefully I’llbe selected again). It was a brilliant camp with lots ofopportunities to learn and extend my riding skillsunder the guidance of Pony Club and Sam Lyle. Thankyou for putting together such a wonderful camp andthank you for letting me share this experience with all the other lucky people who were chosen for state camp.

Letters to the Association

Dear Roger, Jenny, Peter, Frank, Rob, Phil,

Kim and Elaine!

I want to thank you all so much for this years state camp. For another year you all pit a stop to your summer holidaysto supervise us Kids (although I do feel I’m getting a littleold) while we rode hard, played hard, ate and slept for aweek. Again I learnt so much from all the instructors andcould feel my self improving each day as I sweated in theSydney sunshine.

The venue was simply incredible, this was my first time atSIEC and I want to thank the Pony Club of NSW so muchfor putting a lot of money and effort into organising theseamazing facilities, where Olympians have competed andtrained. It was a fun week, full of horses and friends andeach camp just gets better and better. It has been prettysad getting back to normal life and work.

I hope you all know how much every single one of usappreciates the opportunity to be part of an experiencelike this.

Hope to see you all again next year (if you’ll have me).

from Zone 28. She is a very welcome addition to the teamand her experience as a schoolteacher who has takengroups of children on tours and to camps was evident. JillBrown who retired after three camps was missed. DrFrank Kelleher again carried out the duties as stablesupervisor and again lectured on animal husbandry.

The instructors this year were: - Mounted Games: -Rob Bennett of Zone 19; Dressage: -Anne Honner; Showjumping: -George Sanna; Eventing: -Sam Lyle. Our chef was again Edwina Mitchell of Zone 3.Jenny Frankum, Zone 10 is in charge of Instruction, but asyou would imagine, keeps an eye on everything else. PhilLogue, Zone 7 has the title of Camp Commandant. He isably assisted by Peter Saville Zone 27 and Kim FeltonZone 20. The jobs carried out by all these people are veryvaried and all of them put their shoulders to the wheel asnecessary. Kim has developed into a very able lieutenantto Rob Bennett – not a simple job to such a task master.I from Zone 13 also attend the camp.

All of us are determined, that in addition to the excellentinstruction, which is available to the Camp Members, theyshould act in the way one expects Pony Club Members toact. The officials and the Camp Members at all timesmust consider our Association's reputation.

These were held as follows: -Dressage: - Macksville Zone 9Sporting and Campdrafting: - Inverell Zone 13Jumping Equitation: - Bungendore Zone 16Showjumping: - Bingara in Zone 8Mounted Games: - Tumbarumba Zone 20Eventing: - Warren Zone 4

All of these Zones and their clubs, their officials andmembers deserve our thanks for all of the effort which isput in to the conduct of these championships. Some ofthe zones appear frequently in the championships lists. I urge all zones to consider applying to hold achampionship if at all possible. We look forward to theintroduction later this year of a new state event, the StateShow Riding Championships.

Again members from our northern zones attendedQueensland State Championships. These are held in farnorthern Queensland and far western Queensland at

The Pony Club Association of NSW page 6

Our Association has come to the end of another very busyyear. The annexure to this report sets out all of theschools, squads etc which have been conductedthroughout the year 2004. Our membership numbersremain satisfactory, although there was very slightdecrease during the year. This is a bit disappointing, aswe have had increases for the last few years. I think weall acknowledge that we do have a problem with numbersdropping off when children attained an age of somewhereabout 14. It would seem that not only the number of boysdramatically reduces, but also the number of girls isreducing. This has been referred to during the year and Ihope that somebody can come up with some solution. From attending various meetings, not only with other PonyClub Associations but also other sporting bodies thisappears to be a common problem. We should not sit backand just say, "it’s happening to everybody else" andaccept the situation. I ask all members to consider thisproblem and see what can be done to address it, as we certainly do not want it to become a trend, whichexacerbates.

Pony club is a wonderful family oriented organization. Itespouses excellent aims, which if respected and adoptedassist in the building of character of junior members andin their physical and mental development.

On infrequent occasions, there are disappointinginstances when some people appear to overlook that thisis a youth organisation, for the benefit of young childrenand young adults. I implore all members, parents andofficials to remember this.

A N N U A L C A M P

I refer of course to the camp, which was held in Januarylast. We never have any problem in filling the placesalthough on this occasion the number applying was notquite as high. Nevertheless there were still far more thanrequired and the choosing of applications was still verydifficult. I believe the written applications were of a betterstandard overall, but I do not suggest they could not be improved.

Again the camp was held at the Sydney InternationalEquestrian Centre, Horsley Park, a really excellent venue. The executive members who devote the better part of aweek of their time to attend the camp and carry out all ofthe necessary duties enjoy the experience butnevertheless finish the week somewhat tired. Particularthanks this year, to the new Camp Mother, Elaine Caswell

times as well as close to the New South Wales stateborder. To travel to places as far away as Ingham, forexample, for showjumping and jumping equitation is quitean effort. Queensland Pony Club members are alwaysvery welcome to our State Championships.

The Prince Philip Games were conducted at Caboolture inQueensland. The New South Wales team, coached asusual by Rob Bennett assisted by his wife Dalene aschaperone, were the winning team, Peter Nicholson -Zone 16, Brett Davies – 16 Zone, Samantha Ceccato –Zone 22, Shaun Reid – Zone 14 and Jaclyn Dowling Zone16. I congratulate them all on behalf of the association.Queensland were very welcoming hosts and the tour wasvery much enjoyed by all of the participants.

The Senior Mounted Games were held in Victoria atWerribee. This team was also successful, making it aclean sweep for Mounted Games for New South Wales.Phil Logue was coach and the team consisted of: -Brenton Ward – Zone 22, Shaun Thompson- Zone 25Geoffrey Braithwaite – Zone 7, Graham Aird - Zone 7 andKyle Eddy – Zone 16. The championship was concludedwith a dinner held in Melbourne. Victoria's hospitality wasvery much appreciated.

I must say how I appreciate hearing from Rob and Philsuch results by mobile phone more or less as the lasthorse passes the finishing post.

As everybody knows these are to be held in WesternAustralia in July this year and the competitions are in thefollowing disciplines: - Dressage, Showjumping, Eventing,Prince Philip Games and Senior Mounted Games.Throughout 2004, applications have been called for andreceived and an enormous amount of thought, planning, costing and preliminary organisation has been addressed.Immediately after the 2005 Dressage Championships, theprocess of choosing the Olympic discipline teamscommenced. At this stage I can say that the first roundhas been chosen. People will realise, that because of thevery great distance horses are to be transported, the costthereof and generally of attending such championships, together with the necessary time away; that having beenchosen, each selected member is being asked to confirmhis or her availability. It is believed that there may well bea second round of selection. All applicants will be kept asfully informed as soon as possible.

INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATION

I N T E R N AT I O N A L M O U N T E D G A M E S

Peter Nicholson – Zone 16 was the New South Walesrepresentative, who competed in the USA. The team wasplaced second. The reports of the team not only speakparticularly well of Peter's ability as a mounted gamesplayer but also of his popularity as a team member andAmbassador for his country and his sport.

The International Mounted Games are to be held in SouthAustralia this year and Samantha Ceccato – Zone 22 is theNew South Wales member of this team. These games areto be held in a few weeks time and Samantha goes withour congratulations and our very best wishes.

On behalf of our association I congratulate and thank Roband Dalene Bennett for their appointment as coach andchaperone of the Australian team and for taking on thisjob. This involves them in having the team, chosen fromthroughout Australia, for a week's training prior totravelling to South Australia, joining with the otherinternational teams for a tour in South Australia includingKangaroo Island and then competing at Gawler as part ofa Horse Festival.

It is appropriate that I should mention here that the APCCresolved at its meeting earlier this month that henceforth, the International Mounted Games Team will be chosen onmerit rather than State membership. The team will bechosen at the Prince Philip Games in the preceding year.

I N T E R - PA C I F I C R A L LY

There was no Inter-Pacific Rally in 2004. However this year, there will be a team going to Canada and Bree Furze, Zone12 was chosen from a very strong list of applicants as theNew South Wales member of this team. Congratulationsand best wishes to Bree.

We have not yet been successful in having agreement tohave the Inter-Pacific teams chosen on merit rather thanthe State basis.

OTH E R I NTE R NATI O NAL R E P R E S E NTATI O N

New Zealand invited an Australian team to consist of six (6)members under twenty (20) years of age and four (4)members over twenty (20) years. This invitation and thenecessary details were received during the State Camp andtime was extremely short for the closure of applications. Therefore it was limited to camp members and three ofthem managed to be chosen for the national team: - under20 - Kirsty Delaney- Zone 4 and Libby Smith -Zone 25; over20 - Chris McRoberts – Zone 16.

R O YA L E A S T E R S H O W

I usually have something to report in relation to the RAS inthe annual report. However all that I can say on thisoccasion, is that I wish the very few members who are ableto compete in Pony Club events at that show, the very bestof luck.

A U S T R A L I A N P O N Y C L U B C O U N C I L

The 2005 Annual Meeting was held a couple of weeks ago, hosted by New South Wales at the Gemini Hotel. As I havealready reported, the method of selecting InternationalMounted Games Teams has been altered as proposed byNew South Wales. The proposal to choose the Inter-PacificRally team on merit was defeated. The review of thesyllabus is very nearly completed.

Louise Carter the administrative assistant, resigned towardsthe end of 2004 and we now have Debbie Nichols who hasreplaced her. She commenced work one week before Jennyleft for four weeks holiday to ski in Canada. Firstly, I thankDebbie, particularly for her efforts in that period, which clearlycould not have been easy for her, but she handled it very well.Secondly I am pleased to say that both Jenny and herhusband, Greg came back without any broken legs on thisoccasion. A mildly sprained ankle is nothing.

I am sure that you will find that the pony club website is beinggreatly improved. During this coming year you will have on-line facilities available for affiliations and purchase ofmerchandise. Most, if not all application forms for things likeState championships, camp, membership of teams etc., will beavailable on the website. For those however who don't feelcomfortable with these facilities, the present methods willremain in place. Clubs might consider however, appointing aperson as "affiliations officer" who will attend to these sorts ofthings if the secretary does not wish to do so.

From time to time we are told or we hear rumours; that thepresent sports house in which our office is situated is to bedemolished or otherwise become unavailable to us. Theposition has not changed, we are still there. The executivekeeps its ear to the ground and I feel sure that if we do losethese premises there will be sufficient time and opportunity tolocate elsewhere. This may of course involved some expense.

On behalf of all I thank Jenny for the effort she puts into thejob and particularly for the interest she has in all of ourassociation's affairs. She came to us with the backgroundand experience of a keen pony club member as a child andyoung adult and as a club official. She has continually addedto her knowledge of all pony club matters, State andAustralian Pony Club Council administration.

S TAT E C O A C H E S

If you look at the annexure of schools and squads attached tothis report, you will see that Jane Frankum, as coachcoordinator, has quite a job in arranging for the schools andsquads and of course, instructing at many of them. Jane,Sarah Venamore and Gina Haddad, now with the addition ofBen Netterfield on a number of occasions, are being kept verybusy and we hear excellent reports of the schools and squads.

I make particular reference to Junior Regional Schools. Youwill note how popular they have become. They are the resultof a suggestion from the state coaches and this is indicativeof their interest in the association and its progress.

T H E E X E C U T I V E

I thank every member of the executive for the work that theyput into the association and the time that they give to do this. All of them are busy in their zones and they also have somelife outside pony club, perhaps somewhat restricted.

There has been quite a change in the administrativeprocedures of the Council. The Victorian delegate is theTreasurer and the Western Australian delegate is thesecretary. They are both carrying out their duties in a "hands-on" manner. The President, Don Nixon the Queenslanddelegate is also carrying out his duties in a very direct way.Mrs Brideoake, the former executive director now has aconsultancy contract with the Council to carry out specificand reduced duties.

What might be seen as the consideration for having one of theteams chosen on merit, is a partial capitation fee. This is to beset at the November meeting each year and uponconsideration of the budget for the ensuring year. Thirty-fiveper centum (35%) of the moneys required in addition togrants and other income, is to be paid on a State basis andthe balance on a per capita basis. As members will realize, this has been an ongoing matter for years. It is probably nota bad decision under circumstances, which might otherwisehave meant the disintegration of the Australian Pony ClubCouncil. I do believe however that there should be furtherdiscussions about representation generally.

F I N A N C E S

Members will shortly see, on the presentation of the financialreport by Doug Denby, that our finances are very strong.Throughout the year, we have met all requests for schools andsquads and we are in a position to continue to do this.Sometimes of course there has to be negotiation aboutfinding a date suitable to all parties. As advised last year, it isnecessary to have substantial available funds, as insurancepremiums must be paid prior to the commencement of theyear. We are fortunate to obtain a substantial grant from theNew South Wales Department of Sport and Recreation forwhich we do thank the Department very much, not only forthe grant but the continual support that we have from it.However we cannot be assured that we will always have thegrant and must look to be self-supporting.

I N S U R A N C E

Fortunately there was no public liability claims during the year. There have been a number of personal accident claims and sofar as I'm aware most of these are quite minor. The covers wehave for 2005 remain the same as last year with an addition ofa personal liability cover where there is no other personalliability policy held by the individual member. The arrangementwe have, as to the casual employment of members of the PaidInstructors Panel is working smoothly. Apart from theadministrative costs the association meets both superannuationand workers compensation payments as required.

A D M I N I S T R AT I O N

Jenny Amadio has continued throughout the year to keep thework up to date and at the same time to initiate actions tobring all of our office procedures into the 21st century.

Members who have attended the State Camp of the Pony

Club Association of NSW consider this to be a highlight of

their Pony Club days. The Camp is for the top fifteen riders

in the state in the disciplines of Dressage, Showjumping,

Eventing and Mounted Games. Sixty riders come together

from all across NSW to receive instruction by Level III EFA

Instructors in the Olympic disciplines. Past Instructors

include Wayne Roycroft, Vicki Roycroft, Colleen Brook,

George Sanna, Gillian Rolton, Gillian Rickard, Sam Lyle

and Anne Honner. Mr Rob Bennett currently instructs the

Mounted Games.

Camp starts on Sunday where all riders meet and settle in.

Instruction takes place from Monday to Thursday and

riders depart on Friday morning. Evenings include lectures

from well-known personalities in the horse world,

veterinary surgeons and a lot of fun things! State Camp is

not only about receiving the best instruction for you and

your horse it is also about making great friendships which

can last a lifetime and meeting other members from all

over NSW.

Your horse will be well looked after by experts who give24-hour supervision and you will stay in comfortable twinshare cabins onsite at SIEC and receive all meals. Horsesare stabled and instruction takes place at SIEC which hascovered stables, an indoor arena, various outdoor arenasand a training cross country course. All this for a nominalfee of only $55 (including GST)!

The Camp is open to Pony Club members who:

a) will be aged 15 to 24 years inclusive on the first day;

b) have passed their "C" certificate;

c) are of State Championship standard in their chosen

discipline;

d) will be mounted on a suitable horse to maximise

benefit from top instructors;

e) are recommended by their Club and have

satisfactory attendance at Pony Club rally days

(must have attended at least 3 rally days in the

preceding 12 months);

f) are recommended by their Zone Chief Instructor as

a worthy Pony Club member of sufficient standard;

g) applicants for Showjumping and Eventing should be

A Grade

Fifteen members are selected in each discipline.Dressage, Showjumping and Eventing applicants mustapply on the official application form that will bedistributed to all Club and Zone Secretaries in August. This is also available from the Association office. Theapplication form asks questions about your performancesin Pony Club and outside competition, certificatesachieved, previous instructional schools attended, experience with other horses etc. You must be approvedby your Club and Zone. It is very important that theapplication form is filled in carefully and correctly, as thisinformation will be used to select participants.Applications close annually on the 1st November. TheMounted Games riders are selected at the previous year’sState Championship and designated selection day.

While State Camp is designed for the top fifteen riders inthe State, providing that you are of State Championshipstandard and have suitable performances to back up yourapplication we encourage all promising riders to apply. Please don’t feel like you may not be good enough, because you just might! Even if you are not selected inthe first instance, horses go lame, riders get sick or can’tmake it and you may get in as a reserve. We are oftenshort of reserves and it seems a shame to have adiscipline go unfilled when members out there want to gobut haven’t applied.

Apart from filling the criteria for grading, rally attendanceetc., the selectors are looking for good Pony Clubmembers who regularly attend their Club rallies, haveperformances at State Championships and also at Cluband Zone level, have performed well in open competitionand have been riding the particular horse for asubstantial period of time. You must nominate on aparticular horse and most details will pertain to thatparticular horse. Camp is designed for steady horse/ridercombinations that have been together for a while andhave performances; it is not designed for new or veryyoung/green horses. Major requirements of State Campapplicants are ENTHUSIASM, a desire to learn andimprove and be willing to try your hardest.

Please, if you feel that you may be of the appropriatestandard, consider applying for the State Camp. It is avery worthwhile experience, hopefully one you will wantto come back to again and again.

From Zone 21

There was movement in the Zone, the word was passed alongWe thought of having a Hickstead, and it got the gong!!!

We pushed and shoved until we got our way,And to our surprise – it was happening one day!!

A band of girls was all we had to make our Hickstead come alive,Some days it really felt like that we wouldn’t even survive.

We begged and borrowed from whom we could and from those we could not pay,Our Hickstead is coming together and it’s happening in Hay!!

With Question 1 from ZCI –what rules do we apply? Are we Showjumping or cross-country – we just looked into the sky.

Ring, ring to Sydney, who then set us straight,We must go to what the rulebook says and go to Table A.

Our date was set in August, and we were already to go,The weather turned against us – it did everything by snow.

Under four inches of water, we decided to pull the pin. After a special meeting – Programs in the bin!!

Our Show was in September and the course was still not done,The date was set for November – now its not just fun.

With the programs sent out again and the entries coming in,We girls, we started to panic and then we called on kin.

Our band of girls, we battled on, blistered, burnt and sore,Our muscles ached and our bones hurt – right down to the core.

The day was nearly upon us and darkness was so near,We still had to number jumps – all we wanted was a beer!!

6am we were to start – till the water jump- find a judge,We all slept in and were a little late – now the water jump’s sludge.

Trucks and floats begin to arrive –Oh my god – how will we survive!!

The crowd gathered all around – under the awning they could be found,The first bell rang and off they went for all to see,

The first rider was on our course – their face filled with glee,Proud parents watched and cheered – the clapping did not cease

Our Hickstead was working - now there could be peace!!

Narrandera, Leeton, Griffith, Hillston and Balranald and Colly all showed their supportHay had a Hickstead – who would have thought!!

The Pony Club of Hay would like to thank you all, For the support and donations – we all had a ball.

See you all back next year – but it won’t be in the heat,And the band of girls would have recovered from the band aids on their feet!!
