READINGS FOR THE WEEK

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

I am gentle and humble of heart Today's Gospel in an answer to a very simple question: who is this Jesus we follow? What is he like? He tells us himself: he is gentle, and humble of heart. There is a sim-plicity about this Gospel which speaks very clearly to tired hearts. Indeed, it is often the case that we overlook the simplicity of the Gospel message - which is why it is valuable to be as children, constantly wondering and mar-veling at the beauty and fascination of Jesus. How much God must love us: the message of salvation is so easy to receive, the promise is so welcome. This is a Sunday to wallow in the wonder of a God who is kind and full of compassion.

THE WORD THIS WEEK

An excerpt from: One in a series of historical reflec ons by Tim Lanigan 2/2015 At a moment when the vice president of the United States, the speaker of the House of Representa ves, and six of the nine jus ces of the Supreme Court are Catholic, it may be hard to imagine a me when Catholics were not only a small percentage of the popula on, but a marginalized one as well. For example, in the 1850s, only five percent of Ameri-cans were Catholic. Today, it’s 25 percent. But more im-portantly, in the late 19th Century, Catholics had li le repre-senta on in the seats of power.

CatholicNegroAmericanMissionBoardFrom its beginning, the Catholic Negro American Mission Board has provided for the needs of African American Catho-lics. Spreading the Gospel among African American communi-

es was a chief concern of then-Father John Carroll, at the me Prefect Apostolic of the United States and later to be-

come the na on’s first bishop. The monetary costs of Catholic ministry in the face of segre-ga on and discrimina on became too much for the Commis-sion for the Catholic Missions and its na onal collec on to handle on its own. To raise the profile of evangeliza on work by and among African American Catholics, the bishops elect-ed to establish the Catholic Negro American Mission Board at New York City in 1907.

Sunday, July 16th, 2017 The Black and Indian Mission Collection (BIMC) exists to help diocesan communities to build the Church and preach the Gospel of Jesus among the African American, Native American, and Alaska Native people of God. Every year, it is the amazing generosity of Catholic faithful just like you who enable the Black and Indian Mission Office to support the following important priorities:

Enlivening Parish Life & Catechesis Helping Educators Reach Kids

Empowering Evangelizers Encouraging Vocations

Many people benefit from your support of the BIMC: • Students in the small mission school in the Deep South. • The Catholic community served by a na ve deacon in Alaska. • The Na ve American par-ish on the prairie. Your support helps all of them come to know Jesus. • The BIMC helps get good teachers in schools that would otherwise struggle to stay open. • Funding from the BIMC helps dioceses form lay ministers and catechists to spread the Gos-pel in their own communi es. • Suppor ng the BIMC helps encourage young African Americans and Na ve Americans to give their lives to the Lord as priests, brothers, or sisters.
