THE WORD THIS WEEK

The message of God’s for-giveness is one that we are famil-iar with, but which the Lord still wishes to emphasise. Our hu-man approach to forgiveness is so often flawed we hold grudges, erect barriers, make demands and establish conditions. Jesus wants to remind his listeners

and us that God’s forgiveness is overflowing and bounti-ful. Saint Paul was well aware of this: he had persecuted the Church, calling himself the greatest of sinners; and yet, thanks to the inexhaustible patience of God, he can count himself a believer. We must be open to the gift of forgiveness for ourselves, and also (as the Parable of the Elder Brother shows) open to that forgiveness offered to other whom we would condemn.

Dear Friends,

This weekend marks the 15th anniversary of September 11 and for many the attack on our soil is still vivid in their minds. While we cannot forget what happened, we need to prayerfully remember the victims and their families. At the same time pray for the perpetrators so that their hate filled hearts may turn to the true God who is full of love and compassion. The hatred still continues and we as Christians are taught not to hate, but to love. Remembering the words of Jesus: “love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you” (Lk. 6:27f), we should continue to pray for all those who persecute Christians and peace loving people.

I have good news concerning the construction of our Gazebo. After this long wait, we finally have the permit for the construction of the same. The contractor will do his best to complete the construction as quickly as possible, but there are inspections from the county and those could still delay the process. By the time you read this, perhaps the first stage of pouring the concrete will have been completed. As I have mentioned before, this time, we are building the gazebo in concrete so that it will not be destroyed again like the last time.

As I had appealed to the congregation last weekend, our fund raising drive for the replacement of our air-conditioning is on and I am seeking the cooperation of all the parishioners to raise the ($100K) one hundred thousand we need to replace the unit. Each family can contribute according to its means. I hope to receive the cooperation of all our families. As I mentioned in my appeal, kindly use the building fund envelopes to make your contributions toward the same. For the benefit of those who do not receive the envelopes, there will be specially marked envelopes at the back of the church for this project. Last week there was a visitor at the church who made a $20 contribution to the air conditioning project. If a visitor who has no connection to our parish is willing to make a donation, how much more should we be in making a sacrifice for our church? There are families that prefer to make a one-time lump sum donation, while others can only make a weekly or monthly donation. You decide how you want to do it. We will have a thermometer indicating how much we receive. To date, we

have received $4657.33 for the air conditioning project. As I mentioned during my appeal, we are glad that the a/c is still working, but we don’t want it to die on us. We would rather replace it before it completely dies rather than wait for it to die and then replace it because that would leave us with no a/c for a considerable amount of time.

We had the special second collection last weekend for the flood victims of Louisiana, and this weekend we have the second collection for Catholic University of America. We also have the mission appeal this month for the last weekend, which is for a diocese in Ecuador. With all of these collections, I’ve decided to cancel our monthly second collection for St. Vincent de Paul and Haiti. It is not that they don’t need our help, but because there are so many second collections, I thought it prudent to sacrifice our charity so that others may benefit by it. I know that it is optional and there is no obligation on the part of anyone to contribute toward the second collection. But we do have an obligation to help the poor and the needy and hence the collection for Louisiana and the mission appeal are important and we need to support them. Next week I will be writing about the diocese that will benefit from the mission appeal.
