of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Village of Attica September 11, 2014 was the 13 th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York City. December 7 will be the 73 rd Anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. We annually commemorate these dates to remember those whose lives were lost. In the Christian church, congregations often choose the Sunday closest to November 1, All Saints Day, to memorialize those who have gone on to the next chapter of their eternal life. In all three instances, we honor individuals who are no longer with us. In the first two cases, we remember persons whose lives were cut short by tragedy. On the last occasion, those we memorialize often died of old age. But that is not always the case. Sometimes disease or accidents take a loved one’s life far too soon for our comfort. This earthly life is uncertain. Our days are numbered. As Christians, we have the hope of heavenly life. Yet, most of us do not want to enjoy heaven any time soon. We want to live our earthly lives to the fullest! We want to die in our sleep at a ripe old age. So, we tend to push any thought of our own death back into the deep, dark recesses of our minds. We think about death as little as possible. Sometimes, we even live in denial. We believe we can make our world a totally safe place and become fearful when it is not. How can we find a happy medium? How can we go on with our lives in as normal a fashion as possible? Because there is no safe road map. There is no program to guarantee our success. When Jesus was baptized and began his ministry, his life became more perilous as he preached about God’s Reign. The more he spoke of it, the more unsafe the world became for him. Yet, he made the most of his time and went where God sent him. He did not gloss over death. Indeed, he spoke of the death he was to suffer more than once, much to the chagrin of his disciples. Like Jesus, we should tell of God’s Reign with our words and actions. We should simultaneously risk and be thankful, because we belong to God. How do we do this? We help those in need. We support those who receive negative reactions because they look different. We gather with others in times of grief. We give money and time to agencies that help with the healing process. We pray. We are thankful for who we are, whose we are, where we live, and for our well-being at this moment. As we commemorate perilous occasions, we should remind ourselves to always draw from the deep pools of our Christian faith. Let us not run from risky situations, but become like Jesus. He did what needed to be done to make this world a better place. So, how do you follow in our Savior’s footsteps? How are we his disciples? It’s Sauerkraut Supper time again! Please sign up to help! We could use more helpers in the take-out line, more waiters & waitresses. Please check the sign up sheet in the hallway. If your name is on there, please write OK next to your name if you are able to do the job you had last year. If your name isn’t on there, please sign up!

of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Village of Attica

September 11, 2014 was the 13th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York City. December 7

will be the 73rd Anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. We annually commemorate these

dates to remember those whose lives were lost. In the Christian church, congregations often choose the

Sunday closest to November 1, All Saints Day, to memorialize those who have gone on to the next

chapter of their eternal life.

In all three instances, we honor individuals who are no longer with us. In the first two cases, we

remember persons whose lives were cut short by tragedy. On the last occasion, those we memorialize

often died of old age. But that is not always the case. Sometimes disease or accidents take a loved one’s

life far too soon for our comfort.

This earthly life is uncertain. Our days are numbered. As Christians, we have the hope of heavenly

life. Yet, most of us do not want to enjoy heaven any time soon. We want to live our earthly lives to

the fullest! We want to die in our sleep at a ripe old age.

So, we tend to push any thought of our own death back into the deep, dark recesses of our minds.

We think about death as little as possible. Sometimes, we even live in denial. We believe we can make

our world a totally safe place and become fearful when it is not.

How can we find a happy medium? How can we go on with our lives in as normal a fashion as

possible? Because there is no safe road map. There is no program to guarantee our success.

When Jesus was baptized and began his ministry, his life became more perilous as he preached about

God’s Reign. The more he spoke of it, the more unsafe the world became for him. Yet, he made the

most of his time and went where God sent him. He did not gloss over death. Indeed, he spoke of the

death he was to suffer more than once, much to the chagrin of his disciples.

Like Jesus, we should tell of God’s Reign with our words and actions. We should simultaneously

risk and be thankful, because we belong to God. How do we do this? We help those in need. We

support those who receive negative reactions because they look different. We gather with others in

times of grief. We give money and time to agencies that help with the healing process. We pray. We

are thankful for who we are, whose we are, where we live, and for our well-being at this moment.

As we commemorate perilous occasions, we should remind ourselves to always draw from the deep

pools of our Christian faith. Let us not run from risky situations, but become like Jesus. He did what

needed to be done to make this world a better place.

2014 An unusual donation of 8 “My Companions”® has been given to Plymouth Crossroads, United Church of Christ home in Lancaster by John Brandon and Artone Manufacturing. Plymouth Crossroads welcomes disconnected, abused and homeless young men ages 16 to 20 to a safe home where they can develop their own plan for an independent path to their future. Their transitional program offers support for education, job training & placement, & life skills support at no cost. So bring your Christmas gift list and get a head start on shopping before things get too hectic. A stop at Vidler's is also a possibility!

Marian Shearer's Farewell

We are preparing to say goodbye to our Associate Conference Minister, Rev. Marian Shearer, who will be retiring on March 31, 2015 after 14 years with the New York Conference. As we have done for others who have left our conference, we will be compiling a memory book and monetary gifts for Marian.

Please send letters and pictures to be included in the book to [email protected] or the conference office and monetary gifts made payable to the NY Conference UCC with "Marian's retirement" in the memo to: NY Conference UCC c/o Patti Rodrigues 5575 Thompson Road Dewitt, NY 13214
