Little did I expect that I would become a messenger for the Kenrick family…but that is what has happened…as you know Sr. Jane Kenrick, the South American missionary and Sister to our Sr. Judy Kenrick, has been home for the past month to be with Judy and to be the official “go-fer”…last Sunday afternoon she went to the Soccer match where Abby Wambach was play-ing…she had a spell and was taken to RGH for tests which were inconclu-sive, but are tending to a gall bladder issue…she is home now at the Mercy Motherhouse and now Judy is visiting her daily …I saw Sr. Jane on Monday and she was so disappointed that she had this incident before Abby punched the soccer ball for her 100th goal…she is better but has to take it a bit easy for a day or two. Today we begin our first article about the Priesthood…I wrote this one and hope that as the year goes on, we will be enriched by what is shared…I have already heard from 2 priests and had one feel he was not up to it…it will be interesting to see the approach that our guests will take…I had several posi-tive comments from parishioners about my June 28 article about the needs of the Priesthood…and one negative who wrote directly to the Bishop…I am awaiting the specifics of that one, but feel that we all need to foster vocations and this person I hope is doing that in his (her) life and circle of friends…it is what makes the world go round, and we need to always be respectful of one another even when we disagree…I wish the person had spoken or written to me first, but certainly do not want to keep anyone from writing the Bishop…or the Pope for that matter…one of our parishioners said he was going to It-aly in the next month and would give my greetings to Benedict XVI…and pray for his healing of that right wrist. Bea Hack has been having some trouble with one of her feet… (is it catch-ing?) and so will not be as present at all the Masses for the next several week-ends…so please if you will be away, get a sub…and watch at Communion time to see if we need someone to come from the pews…generally our minis-ters are very good and it showed last weekend when the LA’s did a super job of setting up and coordinating all that goes on in preparation for Mass…thanks to everyone on board last week.

YOU’RE INVITED

I have mentioned that we are in the process of considering our Youth Ministry program and hopefully will have some good support people to serve on an over-arching committee and as helpers for specific elements of the program…if you have some energy along this line, let me or Peggy Lynge (who has volunteered to be the lead person for now) know …we will have more to say about our initial plans for fall in the next couple of weeks. There is a need for 2 - 4 people to serve on the Parish Tithing Committee…if you would be willing to learn about the causes that ask for funds, have an interest in a limited commitment of time (4 meetings a year for 2 hours each) and an additional hour each quarter to write up the bulletin announcement), then give me a call so we can invite you to the Au-gust meeting…this is a great way to spend other people’s money so if you have been stymied by the recent economic troubles, here is your chance to help spend $115,000 in the fiscal year…what an invitation! I am off to Bristol after the 5 pm Mass on Sunday…a couple weeks vacation that will give me a chance to rest and re-new the spirit…my cabin is a great place and I look forward to not doing any big projects, but to wake up to deer in the back yard, watch the rabbits, and try to keep the squirrels out of the bird feeders…it is so close to heaven…Peace!

Gardening Angels

Wanted

Our St. Louis gardens are our first sign of welcome, and they are doing very well this year! Just as our gardens at home need con-tinuous care, so do the beds and shrubs at St. Louis. If you have a love of being outside, playing in the dirt, or a knack for trimming bushes and could give part of an evening or part of a Saturday, we need Gardening Angels! The commitment can be very flexible, for both the time commitment and the choice of specialty: We need someone to care for the geranium planter weekly (no bending, it’s waist-high!) or to spend a time or two tending another area that catches your eye. Please give Sally a ring at the Ministry Center, 586-5675, ext. 235, and we’ll find a place that fits your green thumb! Extra indulgences: Fr. Ray is sure to come by and tell you how good it is to see folks on their knees!

“There is a boy here who has five bar-ley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” - John 6:9 The miracle of the Loaves and Fishes is the only one of Our Lord’s miracles which is recorded six times in the Gospel. It carries two impor-tant messages. First, no matter how little we have, we always have enough to share. Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and do great things with them if we are just willing to let Him. .

PARISH EMERGENCY FUND There are times when people in our neighborhood have struggles in dealing with a variety of issues that some financial resources can help. This parish fund, used by Fr. Kevin, Sr. Judy and Cris Wensel, is a very personal way that our parish com-munity can help people in need. In the past few months, we have been asked to help with some orthopedic items not covered by Medicare; Dimitri House has sug-gested we help a family facing eviction; people have needed gift cards for food. This fund provides a practical one-on-one way that we can help those in need. Your support of this tithing cause does put the Gospel in practice. Thank you! P.S. we receive many “thank you” notes form the people who staff the various tith-ing recipients. They are extremely grateful for the gifts we share.

PARISH

SUPPORT

As part of our registration process to become members of St. Louis Church, we ask you to make a commitment to our common life. We use the Stew-ardship format for this com-mitment. We ask everyone to consider your abilities and to pledge your Time, Talent and Treasure to our community. We realize that we all do not have equal amounts of these categories, but we all can give something in each. Your gift, large or small, ex-presses your giving back to the Lord for the blessings that God has graced you with. Give back to God from the top of your life and not from the bot-tom; give your first fruits as Abel did.

TITHING

REQUESTS

Ever wonder how a cause becomes the tithing designation for each week? Our Tithing Committee meets each quarter to review the vari-ous causes that are submitted by pa-rishioners or from those that directly contact us. The committee assigns one or more causes to a particular weekend and writes a brief summary that appears in the bulletin of the purpose of the group or how they will use the tithe. If you would like to submit a cause for consideration, please send it: c/o the Tith-ing Committee at the Ministry Center. You should give a brief description of the organization, their resources, a possible financial statement, and how they will use the tithe. A personal statement of why you believe this cause is a worthy one is helpful. In-clude your name and phone number so we can contact you if there are any questions.

MARRIAGE AND

MARRIAGE

ANNULMENTS

There are several couples whose Mar-riages were celebrated outside the Church by a Protestant minister or a Justice of the Peace. If you have ex-perienced this form of celebration, whether recently or many years ago, and wonder about the process of hav-ing your marriage blessed in the Church; either Deacon John or Fr. Kevin will be pleased to discuss this with you. The process of an annulment is a real possibility today, but many marriage cases can be resolved without the formal process. We are eager to help any couples who have concerns or questions. The best way to begin the process is by calling the Ministry Center and scheduling an appointment with ei-ther person (586-5675).

And God Laughed

Moses and the Red Sea. Nine-year old Joey was asked by his mother what he learned in Sunday School. “Well Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy

lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. When he got to the Red Sea, he had his army build a pontoon bridge and all the people walked across it safely. Then he radioed headquar-ters for reinforcements. They sent bombers to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved.”

“Now Joey, is that really what your teacher taught you?” his mother asked.

“Well , no Mom, but if I told it the way the teacher did, you’d never believe it!”

Religious Education

Registration for our religious education programs for public school children has already taken place but if you are new to

our parish or have children that have become of age for reli-gious education NOW is the time to enroll them in a program for the fall.

Here are some guidelines for religious education:

Families must be registered parishioners at St. Louis Parish; chil-dren attending Public school are required to be in a parish religious education program every school year.

St. Louis is a stewardship parish: families are committed to sharing their gifts of time, talent, and treasure and also making a regular commitment to participation in Sunday Mass.

Sacrament Preparation

If your children are ready to receive Sacraments of First Communion, First Penance, and Confir-mation you need to register them NOW for the preparation program, even though the programs do not start until the fall of 2009 or spring of 2010.

Here are some guidelines for Sacrament Preparation:

Sacrament Preparation is a separate program from Religious Edu-cation or Catholic School and families must be registered mem-bers of St. Louis Church.

A child must have at least 1 year of Religious Education or Catholic School before they can prepare for a Sacrament.

Please contact Sue Payne at 586-5675 (Ext. 233, 24-hour voicemail) or email [email protected] for registra-tion information or if you have any questions about Religious Education or Sacrament Preparation.

St. Louis Annual Bridge Marathon will be start-ing in September. Anyone interested in playing party bridge once a month in their homes, please respond by August 15 to Fran Price, 461-9056 or Edna Shafer, 248-5217.

Fr. John Corapi, Station of the Cross Radio, will deliver an inspirational talk along with Mass at Buffalo’s HSBC Arena on August 15. For more information or tickets call 877-888-6279.

Different Drug Problem!

The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a Methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question, “Why didn’t we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?”

I replied, I had a drug problem when I was young: I was drug to church on Sunday morning, I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather.

I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my par-ents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn’t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.

I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profanity. I was drug out to pull weeds in mom’s garden and flower beds and cockleburs out of dad’s fields. I was drug to the homes of family, friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some fire-wood, and, if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed.

Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say or think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and, if today’s children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place.

God bless the parents who drugged us. Source: the Internet, author unknown

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

St. Louis Church, Pittsford, New York July 26, 2009

“THE YEAR

OF THE PRIEST”

Fr. Kevin

Pope Benedict has declared June 20, 2009 to June 20, 2010 as The Year of the Priest. It is meant to provide a focus for all members of the Church to reflect and to come to a deeper understanding of the role of the priest in our common life as a Church. This time also provides a

time for us priests to reflect on our ministry in light of the Ordination rite and of the call of the Church community today. Per-sonally, I hope that this time will also stimulate all of us to become more conscious of our ability to form the Church commu-nity. Too often in the past we have allowed the responsibility to foster vocations to the Priesthood and to Ministry to be some-one else’s work---or God’s alone. If we realize that this encouragement and discernment of vocations is centered in the local Church community, in us here and now, I believe we will be a better Church.

Here is what I propose for us here at St. Louis this year: I begin the year with this article in the bulletin which will then be followed by articles by other priests and by 2 lay people. Each month we will publish an article about Priesthood from the perspective of one of these writers. I have asked priests who have served here at St. Louis to share their perspectives. These will include our resident priests, Msgr. Gerry, Fr. Ray and Fr. Al, as well as Frs. John Firpo, Chris Linsler, Jim Schwartz and Lou Sirianni, to name a few. I have also asked Bishop Clark to join this parade of writers. We will continue our article on vocations in the bulletin, tying the week’s Scriptures to the call to serve the community and then to offer a formal prayer at Mass each month in gratitude for the service of priests and to pray for vocations. We hope to invite during this time men in the parish who might be interested in learning about the Diaconate to join us for an open discussion on what Deacons do and the process of formation.

When I think back to my grammar school days and that my own idea of being a priest began to take shape in Junior High school, I know that this is a reality that I don’t fully understand. How did the idea get planted in my head, how was it encour-aged, what was my part in responding---all questions that I could not give a definite answer to, but I do know that I re-sponded. My years in the seminary began in high school and progressed through college at St. Andrew’s and St. Bernard’s. The last four years were focused on theology and saw a real change not only in me but in our Church as the Vatican Council completed its work. The Church was changing, to use Pope John XXIII’s image: opening the doors and windows to allow the Holy Spirit of God to blow anew.

I know that those years of formation were framed by my family who were devout, but not overly religious. My parents formed us in prayerful ways, with weekly Mass a given, praying before meals and before bed, and devotions such as saying the rosary in October after supper in the living room together. Religion was part and parcel of our upbringing and an honored place in our home life.

The presence of the priests of my home parish, Sacred Heart Cathedral, was important. I give much credit to Fr. Mike Hogan, retired at St. John of Rochester, for encouraging me along the way. Fr. Mike was a friendly and caring priest for me then as he continues to be for many today. But there were others also as our parish had a pastor (Bishop Lawrence Casey) and three full-time and one part-time priest (Fr. Lou Hohman).

I cannot leave these formative years without mentioning the Sisters of St. Joseph who taught me at Sacred Heart School. They were an important influence in these days. As is so often true, I did not appreciate them as much then as I do looking back today. That is one reason why I enjoyed my recuperation at their Motherhouse after my surgery in April---reminiscing and remembering.

As I re-read this I realize how vital were those days of youth to shape and form me for the future. I pray that parents and grandparents and siblings would be that kind of influence on children today. While there are fewer priests and sisters in-volved in people’s lives today, we are very fortunate here at St. Louis for the quality and spiritual richness of those who do and have ministered here. May our Church foster and call forth more ministers for the future.

PARISH AND COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

St. Louis Church, Pittsford, New York July 26, 2009

Vocations In both the Old Testament reading and the Gospel today, we see how God always pro-vides what we need. We also see that, if we are willing to share our gifts, God will mul-tiply them and make them even more valu-able. What are your special gifts and how is God asking you to share them with the Church? Our local Church needs your gifts. Have you ever considered using them in a life of service as a priest, deacon or dedi-cated lay minister? Would you like to speak to someone?

BUILDING PEACE

WITH JUSTICE In his recent encyclical, “Caritas in Veri-tas” (Charity in Truth), Pope Benedict reminds us of our responsibility to the world’s poor: “Life in many poor countries is still extremely insecure as a conse-quence of food shortages, and the situation could become worse: hun-ger still reaps enormous numbers of victims among those who, like Lazarus, are not permitted to take their place at the rich man's table…. Feed the hungry (cf. Mt 25: 35, 37, 42) is an ethical imperative for the universal Church, as she responds to the teachings of her Founder, the Lord Jesus, concerning solidarity and the sharing of goods. Moreover, the elimination of world hunger has also, in the global era, become a requirement for safeguarding the peace and stability of the planet….” (#27) Reflection: How can I imitate Jesus’ compassion and strong sense of justice in responding to the world’s greatest needs?
