On A Seven-Mile Sojourn, and Seven More (Joyful) Miles Copyright 2020 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

Today’s second reading contains a favorite word of mine: sojourn. It’s journey-esque, but besides a travel element, “sojourn” has a temporal element with a side of displacement. Dictionary.com defines both the noun (“a temporary stay”) and the verb (“to stay for a time in a place; live temporarily”). Peter — or whoever authored Peter’s letter — uses a form of the word as he opens with a greeting to the inhabitants of various regions: “…to the sojourners of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, in the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification by the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ, may grace and peace be yours in abundance.” First of all, wow! That guy can write a letter! But I digress… Per one biblical footnote, the author is addressing the Gentile converts of Asia Minor because they accept the Christ, in contrast to “…their actual existence as aliens and sojourners scattered among pagans.” So, the faithful there don’t really live there. They’re a Promised Land people called to Jesus (and ostracized for it), not to their faithless days of yore. To this exact point, the author goes on: “If you invoke as Father him who judges impartially according to each one’s works, conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning, realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished lamb.” “…during the time of your sojourning…” Without even knowing it, the two disciples in today’s Gospel are sojourning as well on those seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus. As they begin, they are perhaps in even worse shape than the faithful Gentiles in Pontus, Galatia, and Cappadocia, for not only were they ostracized for following the Christ before his crucifixion, they are now disheartened and downcast — displaced, in a sense — by the recent events. But this is when Jesus appears (unbeknownst to the two) and asks, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” Cleopas can hardly believe his ears! “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” he answers. The two give Jesus the details, and he recounts for them the Scriptures pointing to the Christ, causing their hearts to burn within them. Nearing Emmaus at day’s end, they ask the stranger to stay with them. He agrees, and later takes bread, blesses it, and gives it to them. Only then do they recognize him as Jesus, but in that moment, he vanishes from their sight. No longer disheartened/ downcast/ displaced, they set out immediately for the seven miles all the way back to Jerusalem to tell the eleven, who are gathered there, saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” This time, though, the seven miles is just a joyful journey. Their sojourn of disillusionment is seven miles behind them.

Parish Life During the Coronavirus Crisis

Our regular weekend and morning Masses are cancelled. Here are some ways you can enjoy Mass during this difficult time: • Mercy Home offers a Sunday morning broadcast of the Mass at 9:30 a.m. on WGN.

• The Archdiocese of Chicago broadcasts Mass at radiotv.archchicago.org/television/broadcast-masses; you may also view those same Masses at the archdiocesan YouTube channel by visiting youtube.com (search for “Catholic Chicago”).

• Masses are also available on EWTN. Daily Mass is at 7:00 a.m. and replayed at 6:00 p.m. On Sunday at 7:00 a.m. Mass is live, then they replay it at 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Visit ewtn.com/catholicism/daily-readings for the EWTN webpage of Daily Mass and Readings.

• Daily readings may also be found at the website for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, usccb.org.

• Relevant Radio offers many resources, including daily Mass at relevantradio.com. Rectory Hours: By order of the governor the Rectory will be closed until May 1. You may call and leave a voice message and someone will return your call. Church Envelopes: You may drop off your Church envelopes in the mail slot at the back door of the Rectory. Open the screen door and drop them in the mail slot. You may also mail them to the Rectory. All of St. Christina activities are cancelled until further notice. • All weddings and baptisms must be postponed and can be re-scheduled only once the

order is lifted. There are no exceptions to this, regardless of the size of the group. However, in case of an extreme emergency for baptism, please seek the permission of your bishop. Funerals and wakes must be postponed until Governor Pritzker’s order is lifted.

• No confessions until further notice.

• The Adoration Chapel is closed until further notice.

• Split the Pot is on hold until the coronavirus issue is resolved and Sunday Masses resume. The pot will continue to grow and envelopes can be turned in at the Rectory or when Masses resume.

• SCRIP Cash & Carry is CANCELLED until further notice.

• The Baby Bottle Project is on hold. When the Rectory re-opens, they can be dropped off at the Rectory. At the present time, there is no secure place to drop them off since everything is locked up.

Baby Bottle Project POSTPONED Our Parish is participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis

pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 36,000 babies — and their mothers — from abortion since opening in 1984. Baby Bottles can be returned when the Rectory re-opens or Masses resume. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. If you wish to make a donation by check, please make it payable to: The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Please do not make it payable to St. Christina Church.

Bulletin Submission Guidelines To submit items to The Sign, please email your article or announcement (HARD COPIES CANNOT BE ACCEPTED) to Marybeth Sprague at [email protected] by Monday at 12:00 noon for publication in the following Sunday’s bulletin. Earlier deadlines apply to some holidays. Microsoft Word is the preferred file format; Microsoft Publisher or high-quality PDF files are also acceptable if necessary. Please send any accompanying images as separate email attachments at the highest resolution possible. Acceptable image formats are JPG, TIF, or PNG. We reserve the right to edit submissions for content or space.

• The Lenten CRS Rice Bowls can be turned in when the Rectory re-opens or Masses resume.

• Women’s CRHP Retreat will take place May 30-31. • Senior exercise is CANCELLED until further notice. • First Communion has been postponed. Date to be determined.

By order of the Governor the Church is locked until

Sew… We Need Your Help! If you can sew, we need your help! Disposable face masks are in short supply and fabric masks can help our healthcare workers and senior citizens. There are many designs online but simple is best. The instructions below for a simple mask can be adapted depending on what you have available. Tightly woven cotton fabric is best. If you don’t have flannel for the lining, use two layers of cotton fabric. If you don’t have elastic, use bias tape or fabric to edge the short end of the mask and make 10-12" ties on each corner. A collection box has been placed in the vestibule of the Oak Lawn Village Hall by the police desk on the west side of the building. The address of the Village Hall is: 9446 Raymond Avenue, Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. Please put your completed masks in a plastic bag and drop them in the box. They will be distributed as needed to local health care providers, nursing homes, etc. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. Dig into your fabric stash and be creative! Happy sewing! Since many stores will be mandatorily closed, fabric can be purchased at Walmart, Amazon or mail order from Joann Fabrics.

Important Rectory Information The Rectory is closed until May 1st by order of the Governor. Voice messages will be returned. Emails will be answered. Please continue to drop off your envelopes in the mail boxes at the front and back doors of the Rectory. You may also mail them to the Rectory.
