WHAT IS GLAUCOMA? Glaucoma is a common eye problem that causes vision loss and, if untreated, can cause blindness. Usually the deterioration is very gradual and not noticeable, so regular eye examinations are recommended for people from middle age. WHAT TYPES OF GLAUCOMA? (4 TYPES)
open angle — where this is no obvious problem, but the fluid pressure builds up angle closure — where the fluid stops circulating and the fluid pressure builds up quickly, causing pain in the eye and fairly sudden loss of vision normal pressure — where the eye pressure hasn't changed, but the optic nerve is still damaged secondary — where glaucoma arises after inflammation, injury, or surgery to the eye WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GLAUCOMA?
Most people with glaucoma have few to no symptoms until their eyesight is damaged. People with angle clo- sure glaucoma can get blurred vision, pain and a red eye, and might see haloes around bright lights.. They can also feel nauseous, with headaches and vomiting. This is an emergency and you should seek treatment straight away so you don’t lose vision.
WHAT CAUSES GLAUCOMA? Doctors don’t clearly understand why glaucoma happens. The optic nerve carries signals from the back of your eye to the brain and allows you to see. Nerve damage often has something to do with the fluid in the eye. WHO IS AT RISK OF GLAUCOMA? You have a close relative with glaucoma / have high eye pressure / are over 50 / are short-sighted or long- sighted / use cortisone (steroid) medications for long periods / have diabetes / have high or low blood pres- sure / have migraine headaches / have had an eye operation or eye injury
HOW IS GLAUCMA DIAGNOSED?
An optometrist or ophthalmologist (specialist eye doctor) can detect it early on if you have regular eye exam- inations every 2 to 3 years.
HOW IS GLAUCOMA TREATED? If you have angle-closure glaucoma, treatment will need to be provided quickly to reduce the pressure. This may be done with eye drops or intravenous medication. You may also need surgery. Nerve cells damaged by glaucoma can’t be repaired. Treatment is designed to prevent or slow further dam- age, mainly by reducing the pressure in the eye. This involves: eye drops or medicine laser surgery or other surgery to open or create a new drainage channel

Another month bites the dust: “Time and tide wait for no man” comes to mind. Our garden is in excellent shape; the winter planting started. The paw paws producing profusely. Lyn provided some very healthy looking tomato seedlings, thanks! Always nice to have some sponsors, you don’t have to be a member to contribute. We are in the progress of renewing some water pipes as too many leaks occurred in the old ones. Despite doctor’s orders, our president Dave, helped by Chris, did a lot of hard work to rectify the situation. Our busy member, Robin, turned out to be very handy on the ride on mower to keep the grass in check which thrifted on the previous flooding of our garden era. Any ensuing damage of the calamity has been taken care of. Some time ago, we planted a Poinciana tree in a corner of our Garden in honour of our former president Lew Proberts. The tree is developing well but would need a proper plaque of the well liked benefactor of the Gemfields community. Any ideas as how to proceed in this matter are welcome. Talking about benefactors, we like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Peter Brown. Peter was a previous member of our Garden Club and will be remembered as an industrious worker with a great vision for our local community as a whole. Vale Peter. As usual, we are looking for new members. We have a monthly meeting on the first Saturday of the month at 9 am at the Garden, come and take part. You also can ring our secretary Pat at 49854544 for further information. The yearly fee is $15- which includes a plot, seeds, tool for use, a well appointed club house and so on. We also have community fruit trees. Last but not least, every Sunday market Chris will be at hand to explain the health properties of the Gumbi Gumbi trees and sell seedlings and the like in aid of the club.

HOME ASSIST ON 4936 8522 OR 1300 223 301 RUBYVALE PROGRESS ASSOCIATION NEWS PAGE WHO WE ARE The Rubyvale Progress Association (RPA) is a body of community-minded people working together to manage public spaces, maintain public amenities, host public events, and instigate projects to bring about a broad range of improvements to our town – for the benefit of both residents and the travelling public on whom many of us depend for our livelihoods. WHAT WE DO We work to maintain and improve public amenities such as the Rubyvale Hall and the Rubyvale Rec- reation Area (on the flats), and liaise with Council in managing their upkeep. We liaise with CHRC, the Community Reference Group, Tourism and other organisational bodies to increase awareness of particular needs of Gemfields Communities, and promote tourism in our area. We lobby Council to instigate new public works – such as the Dump Point on the Sapphire/Rubyvale Road (a waste management system for the benefit of caravaners), a project now nearing completion just in time for the 2021 tourist season. We liaise with other agencies to promote awareness of, and instigate action on local issues – such as the recent Weed Management Day co-sponsored by the Fitzroy Basin Association (FBA). The RPA plans to work together with the FBA to access funding to implement weed control programs locally – both mechanical and chemical controls to be employed to help manage and/or eradicate some of the many invasive weed species that degrade the beauty and integrity of our natural environment. We fund-raise, e.g. through running the Rubyvale markets, and submit applications to various fund- ing bodies to bring the things on our agenda, such as town beautification projects and community events, to fruition. Our biggest event, put on free-to-the-public each year in August, is the Saturday Night Spectacular – SNS. Planning for this event has already begun and we hope to keep making this signature event for Rubyvale at Gemfest time a bigger and bigger success each year. (More on planning developments for this year’s Spectacular in next month’s newsletter). In the spirit of Many Hands Make Light Work, we appeal to all of you who would like to give some- thing back to the community to rally round when extra hands are needed and help keep these good things happening for our town. We hold meetings on the second Monday of the month, from 7pm – 8pm at the Rubyvale Hall. All members of the community are welcome to attend. Finally, I would like to acknowledge here the long-time contribution of the late Peter Brown to the work of the RPA. Peter not only held the offices of President and Vice President for many years, AND put in the hard slog – planting trees, hauling firewood etc – he also took on much of the back- ground liaison work – with local and regional NGO’s as well as government bodies – to progress the profile of our unique physical and cultural landscape here on the Sapphire Gemfields. Peter will be greatly missed in the community. His commitment was inspirational. His legacy will be long remem- bered.

GEMFIELDS LOCAL AMBULANCE NEWSLETTER
On 11th February our local committee had an 8.00am meeting with Assistant Acting Commissioner Warren
Kellett for the purpose of awarding our President Ron Pont with his 25 year badge of service and also a
presentation to Andrew Borchardt and Dave Bradbury of their 10 year service medal. The time has just flown
since Dave first arrived on the Gemfields. A breakfast of bacon and egg muffin was expertly cooked by
Andrew. Photos of this event can be seen on our Ambulance Facebook page.
We are also very pleased to let everyone know that our local ambulance now has a lifting device to help
people who cannot get up on their own if they fall down. It has taken more than 2 years of asking and we are
so happy to have been able to purchase this lifting device for use on the Gemfields. It has already been put to
good use.
The Sapphire Markets are up and running so come and say hello to us on Sunday morning at our caravan. We
have first aid kits and snake bit kits available as well as other bits and pieces for sale and give away.
