Transcript of ŌPĀWA SCHOOL · 2020. 9. 27. · our student and community learn about our Ōpāwa School...
Kia ora tātou,
Whilst it has been an incredibly challenging term for obvious reasons (moving between Alert Levels due to Covid-19), our students, whānau and staff have again provided an amazing range of learning opportunities in and out of the classroom. Highlights for Term 3 include: The increasing number of children coming into school and leaving school independently AND the vast number of older siblings supporting their younger brother(s) or sister(s) and vice versa! Our Year ⅞ Ōpāwa Dragons Basketball Team winning their weekly competition at Pioneer Basketball and this comment from the Basketball Development Officer at Pioneer:
“Congratulations! You have an amazing group of kids here, they worked so well together as a team!”
The overwhelmingly positive response to our Board led Community survey, with many people commenting about how awesome our staff are and how much we care. There were plenty of comments such as: “Outstanding school where the kids are appreciated and understood for who they are and have a sense
of belonging, and the teachers are engaged, caring and highly competent”
Every student in Year 1-4 completed the ‘Junior Run for Fitness’.
Jasmine winning the Art competition through Harcourts and now
collaborating with Justine Ottey, a local artist.
All of our Year ¾ students having their water safety lessons at
Pioneer Pool.
Every class focussing on managing their own emotions through
our school - wide Zones of Regulation focus.
Our eight teachers and their students completed our 12 month Ministry funded ‘Teacher Led Innovation Fund’ project where we have focused on shifting teacher practice to ensure students contribute to their learning in a meaningful and genuine way. Our findings indicate that these shifts have improved our students wellbeing. We have hosted Sophie, Isaac, Kristie, Oli, Ting and Rosie, six Interns (trainee teachers) from The Graduate School of New Zealand.

A group of 40 Year 5-6 students have been trained as Peer Mediators through the Cool Schools programme.
Senior speech competitions both in our school and then Latasha and Eileen competing at the inter-school competition at Cashmere on Monday night. A Skateboarding project has started which has included a ramp being designed and built by Lukas, Rob and groups of students. The first ramp is finished and has been used and next term a second ramp will be built using this collaborative process. We have a team of people who have started the process to plan nature spaces and revitalise our playground areas. Next term some students will join the team. Almost 90% of our whānau engaged with Learning conferences in the middle of the term to celebrate our children’s achievements and successes with their learning. Many students have been having their music lessons through the Christchurch School of Music and our senior students have had their weekly choir rehearsal. Twenty four students have mentoring and basketball sessions with the RAMS Mentoring programme for an hour a week. Some of our students, whānau and Robyn attended the opening of our community Opawa Library. Whaea Tracy and Shevaun have been working closely with Mātauraka Maahanui to plan how we help our student and community learn about our Ōpāwa School cultural narrative.
Our Senior kapa haka have been practising tirelessly for their (on again / off again) performance in Term 4. Groups of students have worked with Amy to complete the artwork on our Penguin - Aroha. Every child and staff member is represented on Aroha. Hosting Ministry of Education property team several times to plan our next property works around our school - hall, Rooms 17-19 and drainage work.
Senior speech competitions both in our school and then Latasha and Eileen competing at the inter-school competition at Cashmere Primary School on Monday night. Raising $1244.90 for Cholmondeley and The Champion Centre through our Ōpāwa Market Day. This was an incredible culmination of the term’s learning which focussed on Trade. This included learning about Financial Literacy, Maths and Social Studies, as well as learning about marketing and advertising.
We can’t wait to see you back in Term 4. Please look after yourselves and take care. Ngā mihi, Sally

As the author of the award-winning Tales From The Farm picture book series, I would like to extend an
invitation to staff, students and families of your school to the launch of my new book ‘A Baa-rilliant Adventure’.
This book is a collaboration with Southland illustrator, Zerika van Jaarsveld. The launch will be held in Oxford, Saturday October 3 at 3pm (the middle weekend of the school holidays). The launch is a free event open to the public (though we do need RSVPs for catering). There will be kids’ activities - dress-ups, face painting and others - along with Middle-Eastern-themed food and drinks. It should be fun. We will also share about how the book came about and the artist, who is coming up from Southland, will share some of her artistic process. Here is a link for people to register interest: https://www.facebook.com/events/631830770643788 More about the book here: https://www.talesfromthefarmpublications.com/shop-talesfromthefarmpublications/a-baa-rilliant-adventure

Garden City Rotary McDonald’s Duathlon
Due to the uncertainties surrounding mass gatherings and events during the Covid-19 pandemic, we have sadly been forced to cancel the 2020 event, scheduled for September 20th. We realise this will be disappointing to all our young competitors and their supporters, but the good news is the 2021 event is already planned and scheduled for Sunday April 11th. We appreciate the support for this charity event, and have invited all registered participants to leave their entries in for the new 2021 date. All entry monies are held in our Garden City Rotary Trust account for safe keeping. We hope that you will continue to support this event because it is our major fund-raising event to support youth initiatives in our local community. Best Regards Gavin Walter Garden City Rotary Duathlon Committee
