A visionary global leader, entrepreneur, adventurer and bestselling author, Blake Mycoskie is Founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS, and the catalyst behind the now-ubiquitous One for One® movement. He’s championed a forward-looking model for corporate responsibility and conscious consumerism, and continues
to assist disadvantaged people worldwide—proof that you don’t have to choose between making a living and making a difference. To date, TOMS has given over 45 million pairs of new shoes to children in need. Additionally, the company and its other gratis products and services have created jobs in developing countries, and have helped fund the restoration of people’s eyesight and the improvement of water quality in various communities.
Mycoskie’s trailblazing approach to business earned him and TOMS the Secretary of State’s Award of Corporate Excellence (ACE). He was also named on Fortune’s “40 under 40” list, recognizing him as one of the top young businessmen in the world. Recognizing his ongoing commitment, Richard Branson recently asked Blake to join The B Team, a group of worldwide leaders which seeks to catalyze a movement of corporate executives who embrace a better way of doing business, both for the wellbeing of people and the planet.

For more than 50 years, former CBS News anchor and 60 Minutes correspondent Dan Rather has been the embodiment of the intrepid broadcast journalist. From the Kennedy assassination—where he was the first to break the news that the president had been killed—to the Indian Ocean tsunami, he has covered every
major story of our time, with distinction and a fierce dedication to hard news. For his unparalleled devotion to his craft, he was named the 2012 recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award for Lifetime Achievement, and has received additional, countless prestigious awards such as the Peabody, Sigma Delta Chi, CPJ Benjamin Memorial and Emmy Awards.
Rather’s reporting skills are legendary, and his single-minded pursuit of the story has taken him to datelines as far ranging as Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, China, Russia, and Cuba. On September 11, 2001, Rather stayed on the air for 18 hours straight to bring Americans news of the deadly attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Constantly looking to innovate new avenues for quality journalism, Rather has now launched a production company called “New & Guts.” He is developing a series of projects ranging from an acclaimed interview program on AXS TV to documentaries and digital video content.

Presented to the Community by:
MEMBERSHIP IMPACTLearning Society membership funds a unique learning experience for our students. Guest speakers spend an equal amount of time in a student-led discussion as they do at the evening lecture. This on campus, student-centric lecture is a signature student experience for Queens.
Relevant and Timely Speakers for Communityand Student Learning Experience
The Learning Society was the first speaker series in the nation to have General Michael Hayden and Sir John Scarlett speak together publicly. Their visit came two weeks after the 2016 Presidential Election and when geo-political and cyber security were daily breaking news.
Coming off his year in space, Captain Scott Kelly shared with our pre-med students the first published findings from NASA’s Twin Study on how the body is affected by extended time in space.

#1 Educational Program According to Queens Students
Engaging Classroom and Campus Dialogue
Learning Society speakers bring intelligent, timely discussions to the Queens community to engage students in learning opportunities before and after speaker visits. Faculty incorporate the topics into coursework, and Everett Library and Student Life create opportunities for student engagement related to the topics.
Queens students met with experts to discuss internship and career opportunities before the Captain Scott Kelly lecture.
Students were inspired to dream big after a private Learning Society screening of “Hidden Figures,” the recent award-winning movie.
-Dr. John Downey,
Dean of Student Life
Speakers such as Scott Kelly not only afford our
students an opportunity to hear from important
people in society, but also provide a wonderful
opportunity for faculty and Student Life
staff to program around their visits...
The Learning Society is a great example
of our community engaging with our
campus and our campus engaging
with our community.
