Hong Kong Dear Mum, Let me say I love you! Do you know why? This year, I read a book called ‘Oliver Twist’. It’s about a boy named Oliver. He lived very hard lives because his mother died when he was a child. He just lived without love. Although Oliver had everything at last, Oliver was not really happy since he had no mother’s love. How lucky I am! Mum, you are patient. You tell me the importance the ability of taking care of myself and teach me to fry eggs, cook noodles and some simple dishes. I always make things in a mess even when doing some easy housework like ironing, cleaning and tidying. You have never given up even I have made mistakes again and again. You always encourage me “practice makes perfect”. It really works. Thanks, mum. I can manage a lot of things myself now when compared with last year. Mum, you are wise. Every year, you discussed and searched information about a trip with me. You spent a lot to enrich my view. I know more countries and different kinds of people, languages and food. You always remind me to plan things well. It really works. Thanks a lot, mum. I can organize a trip or an event myself now. As I flipped through the pages, you were the first thought that flashed through my mind. Was it because of your velvet bathrobe and slippers? Did you give me a soft toy rabbit? No, it was neither of these. Have you ever read the story? It’s about the love a toy rabbit had for a little boy and how the love between them made the toy rabbit “Real”, the rabbit’s word for “alive”. I think the story is about how love, if strong enough, can unite creatures even if they are living in separate worlds. The love and the care between the boy and the rabbit seems like our very own. Dear Mum and Dad,

This is the first time I write to you. Honestly I feel kind of weird. There is a lot in my mind. I really want to pour out all my secrets, but, when I picked up my pen, I hesitated. I do not know if God’s pigeon will help me to deliver this letter to you or my words will just fade out in the air.

I cannot stop thinking of you recently. My emotions are stirred up after reading a book called Blessing Parents. I was really touched by the stories in the book and I even cried a lot. I was specially moved by one of the stories in the book. It is about a mentally handicapped girl who does not know what love is. One day she falls into a river accidentally. Her sister jumps into the river, without the slightest hesitation, and saves her life. However, the poor sister is drown and loses her life. The mentally handicapped girl finally knows what love is. She is sorrowful but it is too late.

This story reminds me all your love. I know both of you love me very much. Although my memories are scrappy, they are full of colours . I can still feel your warmth and tenderness. When I was young, you gave me your best. We were not rich but life was sweet. We used to play in the park every Sunday. Daddy, your arms were very strong and I liked to swing on them. Mummy, hugged me in your arms. Your hair was so soft and long. Those

were the best days of my life.

I know I was not a smart girl and sometimes I was too stubborn to correct myself. Thank you for teaching me how to tell right from wrong. I will not forget what you said in the rest of my life. You are the best parents in the world. I am so proud to be your daughter. I know you are with me all the time, although I cannot see you. Your LOVE is always in my HEART. I Love you, Mum and Dad.

Dear Ariel, my dearest sister,

I have read a book. I am sure you are happy to hear this as it means your constant talks of how useful reading is have finally some effects! The story is quite old but you see a good story, like love, is timeless.

This interesting story is about two twins, Ruby and Gamet. They looked the same and they did everything together. However, Ruby was loud and outgoing while Gamet was shy and quiet. As life changed, they moved to a new town, got a stepmother and entered a new school. Finally, they learned to grow up differently and remained as best sisters and friends. In a way, I see how we are related to them. The book showed me, despite many differences, we sill have a lot to share.

Today is your birthday. You, six years old than me, seem to have an upper hand. I used to think I had to follow whatever you said, even when I did not agree. If I refused to do so, you were always angry with me. Occasionally, I even thought I hated you for making me do things in your ‘clever’ way.

Growing up, we have not always agreed but isn’t that how we are supposed to be? By being different, when I talk to you about things that trouble me, you show me the other side of the story that I cannot see. Sometimes, it is even the answer to my problem. You are encouraging and see possibilities in me because you look at things differently. You know my

NG Chun-heiSt. Paul's Co-educational College Primary School Topic To My Dear Sister with Love

best and worst, and even more, you love me anyway.

Here, I want to express my joy of having you as my sister. We are as close as hands and feet. We can laugh and play and talk over little secrets that I dare not tell Mum and Dad. You are a blessing that has filled my life with love and happiness. What’s more is that I am thankful, not only because you are my sister, but you being you. Our differences, I have realized, only bring us closer and paint an even more colourful picture in life. I have challenged your limit of patience you have ever reached. You have shown me part of the world I have never known.

Happy Birthday and love you forever!

Love, Adriel

Dearest Daddy,

How are you? You have been working in Australia for a week. How is your work? I miss you so much.

Today I read an interesting book called ‘The Incredible Present’. I was attracted by the mysterious book cover. There was a girl doing an experiment in a science laboratory. I have always wanted to be a scientist so I started reading it at once. I liked Lily, the protagonist, very much. She was a young girl with a wonderful sense of creativity. However, she was not happy with her life as her parents traveled a lot. She was staying with her granny and relatives, but she only wished for her parents to stay at home and talk to her. I felt so sorry for Lily.

Daddy, I think I am much luckier than Lily. You chat with me every day. I love to share my happiness and sadness with you. Whenever we spend time together, I feel great joy. You have always been such an incredible father and teacher. You understand me like no one else does. When I am sad and down, you comfort me. You are my bridge over troubled water. When I am sick or scared you will stay with me and pray with me. You teach me to laugh and overcome my fears. Sometimes you are angry with me but you never scold me. Instead your silence alarms me and makes me twist back.

You have taught me again and again to never give up but follow my

dreams. I will study hard to make my dreams come true. A successful scientist needs an imaginative mind. You are the only one who always stands by me and admires my funny inventions, no matter how messy and troublesome they are. You are full of encouragement and hope.

Dad, I love you for your eternal joy and your unconditional love. I truly thank God for the amazing father he gave me. You are the best Daddy in the world.

Dear Mum,

I’ve just finished reading the touching story by Adeline Mah. The novel is called “Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter” and it is a biography of Adeline’s unfortunate upbringing. After reading this book, it has made me more grateful for my family and the things I have. It makes me stop and think of you. I am writing this letter to tell you how much I appreciate and love you.

Adeline Yen Mah had an excruciating childhood. Born in a traditional wealthy Chinese family where males were favoured over females, Adeline wasn’t given any love or care from her parents or siblings. Even worse, she was labelled as “bad luck” because her mother died for giving birth to her. Her life seemed to be full of tears, misery and pain.

Adeline’s story allowed me to realize that love and care are vital for every youngster. Children are like seeds. Love and care are like clean water and sunshine. Seeds cannot grow without these essential elements. I have always thought that love from family is guaranteed, but in reality, it is not. Not every child has love from their parents. Adeline is an example. In her family’s eyes, Adeline was garbage and useless. In order to catch her father’s attention, hoping that someday he would proud of her, she immersed herself in school and strived for academic achievement. In contrast, my life is easy as I always have love from you. I am a fortunate girl.

As I mulled over Adeline’s destiny, I noticed that only a simple hug from you or a sweet smile from Dad, are the things I have taken for granted. I am always cared and loved for; but for Adeline, all these things were as hard to come by as precious diamonds. I know sometimes I can be mischievous and make you angry, but you never give up on me and you support me unconditionally. Thank you, Mom. I will always cherish your love.

Dear Mom,

Last night, I struggled very hard on my bed after spending hours on three moving stories by Jodi Picoult, downloaded with Dad’s kindle. These short pieces, though sharing the common theme of “leaving home”, look very differently. Heart-rending and touching, they made me ponder at an inappropriate time of a day. I remember you lying beside me before the fall of my eyelids. If I could not have fumbled and grasped your warm caring hand in the dark, I would need something to put me to sleep.

Mom, don’t read the first piece, which is all about the tragic loss of a child - the worst thing ever happened to any parent. My heart sank heavily and my eyes were already filled with tears after turning a few pages. I do not want you to stand the pain and sorrow of the story, for sure.

The second piece is a letter of advice from the author to her eighteen-year-old son leaving for college, sweet and canny! I am not smart or “grown-up” enough to comprehend and learn every piece of advice. However, I was quick to perceive the heartfelt words of the author: a person who loves you will make you a “better version” of yourself, because you have done that to Dad and me.

I found the final piece most appealing. One normal day Jenna found her mom leaving home with a note - “taking a break”, followed by her phone call made from San Francisco, twenty-two hours from home by bus, affirming her “vacation”, though everybody mistook it for a strike to make a point! Regrettably, what she did was only to see how living someone else’s life was like!

YIP Chun-heiSt. Paul's Co-educational College Primary School Topic Let Me Say I Love You, Mom

Mom, I have thought of all the things I have taken for granted: your love, your care, particularly your sacrifices! In most of your industrious life you work two jobs, one paid and one unpaid, without complaint. That unpaid job is onerous, with a term unreasonably long and terminable only when either side comes to an end. Since the day you assumed duty, you have never taken any vacations, and not even a single sick leave, no matter how sick and tired you are. I remember once you asked me, “ Would you like to trade place with a prince?” I hope you know my unspoken answer!

Mom, I love you so much!

Yours forever, Sherman
