The Story of SequoyahMore than two hundred years ago near the Tennessee River a baby boy was born. The child, named Sequoyah by his mother, grew up and followed her footsteps as a trader. He was also a skilled silversmith and hunter.

Reared in tribal ways and customs, he never learned to speak, read or write English. While serving in the War of 1812 he became fascinated with the way the non-Indians were able to communicate by writing marks on paper. He referred to these as ’Talking Leaves.’

As a young man Sequoyah became very interested in developing his own system of communicating for the Cherokee. He developed an 85 character Syllabary for reading the Cherokee language. His achievement marks the only known invention of a written language by one person.

As the mighty California Sequoia trees rise out of the forest, so Sequoyah, the Cherokee for whom the trees are named, rose from his tribe to influence his people’s history.
