Let Her GoWell you only need the light when it's burning lowOnly miss the sun when it starts to snowOnly know you love her when you let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling lowOnly hate the road when you’re missin' homeOnly know you love her when you let her goAnd you let her go

Staring at the bottom of your glassHoping one day you'll make a dream lastBut dreams come slow and they go so fast

You see her when you close your eyesMaybe one day you'll understand whyEverything you touch surely dies

But you only need the light when it's burning lowOnly miss the sun when it starts to snowOnly know you love her when you let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling lowOnly hate the road when you're missin' homeOnly know you love her when you let her go

Staring at the ceiling in the darkSame old empty feeling in your heart'Cause love comes slow and it goes so fast

Well you see her when you fall asleepBut never to touch and never to keep'Cause you loved her too muchAnd you dived too deep

Well you only need the light when it's burning lowOnly miss the sun when it starts to snowOnly know you love her when you let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling lowOnly hate the road when you're missin' homeOnly know you love her when you let her go

And you let her go (oh, oh, ooh, oh no)And you let her go (oh, oh, ooh, oh no)Will you let her go?

'Cause you only need the light when it's burning lowOnly miss the sun when it starts to snowOnly know you love her when you let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling lowOnly hate the road when you're missin' homeOnly know you love her when you let her go

'Cause you only need the light when it's burning lowOnly miss the sun when it starts to snowOnly know you love her when you let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling lowOnly hate the road when you're missin' homeOnly know you love her when you let her go

And you let her go

Calypso, The Sweet Nymph

In the story of Calypso, Odysseus goes on Calypso’s island where she keeps him and his crew captive for over seven years. She is hoping to marry him, but Odysseus wants to go back to Ithaca to be reunited with his beloved wife Penelope. Calypso offers him many wishes, which he does not except. She realizes he misses Ithaca and his wife Penelope so she lets him build a ship and sail away. The song Let Her Go relates to this story because in the story, Calypso does not want Odysseus to leave but she realizes that he really wants to leave and go back to Ithaca. She lets him go off and sail away although she really doesn't want him to leave. In the song Let Her Go the singer, Passenger, talks about how he doesn't want to lose a girl and let her go, but he realizes letting her go would be the right thing.

But somewhere we went wrongWe were once so strongOur love is like a songYou can't forget it

Somewhere we went wrongWe were once so strongOur love is like a songYou can't forget itAt all

And at lastAll the pictures have been burnedAnd all the pastIs just a lesson that we've learnedI won't forgetPlease don't forget us

Somewhere we went wrongOur love is like a songBut you won't sing alongYou've forgottenAbout us(Don't forget)

The Lotus EatersIn the tale of “the lotus eaters” Odysseus and his

men are blown off course to a land of people called the lotus eaters that feed off of this flower, called the Lotus, that grows on the land. The flower draws them in, making them forget about going home. As they continue to eat more of these flowers, their memory of returning home becomes worse.

The song Don’t Forget relates to this because the singer is asking somebody not the forget them, she says “somewhere we went wrong, we were once so strong, our love is like a song, don’t forget it”. This line also symbolizes Odysseus longing for home and his wife, not to forget. It also shows how Odysseus’s men forget about their journey to return home and they need to not forget so they can continue on. Getting distracted and losing sight of what their goal is, are both qualities of the song and the story.

Dog Days Are Over - Florence and the Machine

Happiness hit her like a train on a track Coming towards her stuck still no turning back She hid around corners and she hid under bedsShe killed it with kisses and from it she fledWith every bubble she sank with her drinkAnd washed it away down the kitchen sinkThe dog days are overThe dog days are doneThe horses are comingSo you better runRun fast for your mother, run fast for your fatherRun for your children, for your sisters and brothersLeave all your love and your longing behindYou can't carry it with you if you want to surviveThe dog days are overThe dog days are doneCan you hear the horses?'Cause here they comeAnd I never wanted anything from youExcept everything you had and what was left after that too,oh, Happiness hit her like a bullet in the backStruck from a great height by someone who should know better than thatThe dog days are overThe dog days are done

Can you hear the horses?'Cause here they comeRun fast for your mother, run fast for your fatherRun for your children, for your sisters and brothersLeave all your love and your longing behindYou can't carry it with you if you want to surviveThe dog days are overThe dog days are doneCan you hear the horses?'Cause here they comeThe dog days are overThe dog days are doneThe horses are comingSo you better run

Sirens: Scylla and CharybdisIn this episode, Sirens: Scylla and Charybdis are both monsters trying to trap and lure Odysseus and his men to them. Portraying themselves as beautiful angelic creatures and literally sucking them in is how they do so, but really, they are monsters who eat and swallow up anybody in their path. These three monsters cause Odysseus to struggle and creates conflict.

The song The Dog Days Are Over relates to the Sirens. In the song, there is a line that says “Run fast for your mother and fast for your father, run for your children and your sisters and your brothers”. Basically they’re saying run for everything you love and care for, because if you don’t focus and don’t get away, you won’t survive. This relates to the sirens, because the people are running and trying to get away, just like how Odysseus and his crew are trying to get away from the Sirens.

Resist the Temptation

Resist the temptation of the beastYou'll slip and lose your grip and forever fall asleepThe venom is contagious, beware of its spellWhat you thought would be heaven, turns out to be hellI wonder if she knows the devil's taken off her clothesDeep into her soul, slow, now he's in controlPoppas doing worse, a victim of the deadly curseWouldn't be the first to leave the ghetto in a hearse and oh, how it hurtsThe children pay the biggest priceNever get the chance to grow up with a happy lifeBlame it on the rock, but we know that's a bunch of crapSomeone's at the top supplying us with much crackKeep them in a daze, don't let them see the other wayLet 'em all get paid, wont live to see another daySee they never got a breath of the sunshineNow the kids addicted and only hit it one timeWe are destined to be dead as a nationDon't let it come to this, resist the temptationGamble for your soul with the devilYou wonder how low can you go before you reach the lowest levelAs everybody sits and stares

There's no use looking in you eyes cause there isn't anybody thereAnd though it may make you wanna cryGot you stealing from your family and you don't even know whyI guess you think they will understandYou feel cold cause you sold your soul to the dope-manNow there's no turning back, in factIt's decided that would live and die for the crackYou got no friends cause you cheated them allYou feel lonely, low, defeated and smallNo one was there when I took the wrong pathAnd nobody cared if I died in a blood bathBut is this my destiny?Tell the Lord they got my mind but he can have the rest of meCause I'm ready to end it allOne bullet to the brain, forgive my sins and allI didn't mean to be a botherA failure as a son, a husband and a fatherI wish I could turn back the timeGo back and let it find why I let it crack my mindAnd my only explanation, it came to thisResist the temptation

The Cattle of the Son GodIn the story The Cattle Of The Sun God Odysseus

and his crew have to try and avoid many temptations like the sirens., and make smart decisions like choosing to confront either Scylla or Charybdis. The Sirens have beautiful voices and sing irresistible songs that lure in sailors into their islands reefs which have clashing rocks. Choosing to go around the rocks, Odysseus must confront Scylla or Charybdis. Scylla is a six headed monster that can not be defeated in battle. Charybdis is a monster whirlpool that sucks in anything near it three times a day.

The song Resist The Temptation relates to this part of the story because in the song it talks about avoiding temptations in life and in particular situations, and making good choices. In the story of The Cattle Of The Sun God, Odysseus has to avoid a lot of temptations such as the Sirens. Also, he has to make smart decisions by choosing to confront Scylla or Charybdis.

Land of the Dead

In the tale of The Land Of The Dead, Odysseus goes to a place near the homes of the Cimmerians. This place is where the dead souls receive reciprocity. Circe instructed him to dig a trench at a certain spot, then pour milk, honey, mellow wine, and pure water into it. He also sacrificed a ram and a ewe to attract the dead. He sees Elpenor, one of Odysseus’ men who died the night before the crew left Circe’s home. Also, he see his mother, Anticleia and other people he recognizes

The soundtrack I See Dead People in the movie Pirates Of The Caribbean At Worlds End reminds me of this story. This soundtrack relates to the story because in the movie they were around dead souls receiving reciprocity like in the story. Jack Sparrow saw a lot of comrades just like Odysseus did.

The cyclopsIn the story of The Cyclops, Odysseus and his

men sail to the island of the Cyclops. They went into a cave full of sheep and crates of milk and cheese. Odysseus and his men decided to linger around the cave. Eventually Polyphemus goes to the cave and makes a show of hospitality at first, but then goes mad. He eats two of Odysseus’ men and the rest become trapped in the cave. After a while, Odysseus gets the Cyclops drunk and stabs Polyphemus in the eye, blinding him. Odysseus hid underneath the sheep and when Polyphemus opened the cave back up, Odysseus and men escaped.

The song “Son of Poseidon” fits this story not only because Cyclops IS the son of Poseidon, but it is soft and deep in the beginning, showing their patience. Then it gradually gets louder showing the troubles and suspense Odysseus is facing with the cyclops. Towards the end of the song, it is the loudest, showing off how Odysseus has escaped and won.

Help is on the Way(They said, they said)One by land, two by sea.Right there in front of me.Help is on the way.

Five thousand feet below,As black smoke engulfs the sky,The ocean floor explodes,Eleven mothers cry.My bones all resonate,A burning lullaby,You can't take that from me,Just go ahead and try.

She stands at the shoreline,With hands in the air,Her words pierce the dark night,"Does anyone care? "And all along they're saying

Help is on the way(They said, they said)Help is on the way(They said, they said)One by land, two by sea.Right there in front of me.Help is on the way.

Right here! Right here! [x3]

Choking on the black gold,Upon which we rely,We keep axes in the attics,To see cameras in the sky.

Help is on the way(They said, they said)Help is on the way(They said, they said)

We were told just to sit tight,'Cause somebody will soon arrive.Help is on the way.But it never came!It never came!

Help is on the way(They said, they said)Help is on the way(They said, they said)One by land, two by sea.Right there in front of me.Help is on the way.On the way.

Enchantress CirceIn the story The Enchantress Circe Odysseus and his

crew were on there way home to Ithaca and some of his crew members decided to open a bag of winds that Aeolis gave Odysseus. That bag of wind blew them all the way back to Circe island. When they got to her island some of the crew went to search for food on the island and they were captured by Circe and turned into animals. One of the crew members escaped and came back to the ship and told Odysseus what happened. Odysseus went to go save them and when he was going there Hermes meets him and gives him a potion to protect him from Circe powers. Once he finds Circe they make a deal if Odysseus sleeps with her she will turn his crew back to humans. After he slept with her she turned his crew to men. Although, he cheated on his wife Penelope he had to to save his crew.

In the song Help Is On The Way, the singer Rise Against talks about how help will come and save them and do whatever it takes to save them. In the story Odysseus had to save his crew and turn them back to humans and he did what he had to do to save t his men.

Odysseus and PenelopeIn the story of Odysseus and Penelope. Odysseus has returned home from his long journey at war. His wife is very sage and cautious at first, because he’s been gone so long, she can’t believe it’s him. She gives him tests and on the last test, she says to set out the bed in the hallway, but he says that is not possible, because he built it around something and it cannot be moved. She then realizes it’s him, runs into his arms and weeps, because finally after all this time, she is reunited with her husband.

The song Ho Hey can relate to this story, because it talks about how lonely he/she has been, as it says in the line “I’ve been living a lonely life” just like how Penelope has been lonely in marriage without Odysseus. It also talks about how “they” belong together and how they need each other. In the line “I belong with you, you belong with me”. This symbolizes how Penelope needs Odysseus and how Odysseus belongs with her.
