2006-2007 OUTLOOK

The 2006-07 edition of Old Dominion women’s golf is poised to make strong improvements this season with its veteran returnees led by senior Ashley Davis, junior Meghan Schaefer and sophomore Alexis

Garduno, and the addition of three outstanding newcomers. Davis, who red-shirted last season had a solid fall season where she fi nished third at the Lady Pirate Invitational with a school record 68, and won ODU’s Lady Monarch Invitational. The two-time team MVP recorded a 75.9 stroke average in the fall and was ODU’s top performer in the last three fall events. Garduno who missed most of the fall recovering from knee surgery is back at full strength with the hope of picking up where she left off last season. Garduno was ODU’s top golfer in every regular season tournament last season. She tied for second at the Lady Monarch Invitational in the fall, and had four top ten fi nishes last season. Also returning is junior Meghan Schaefer who tied for eight at the Lady Monarch Invitational and took seventh at last years CAA Championships. Sophomore Deztany Jackson who captured the Independent division title at thePGA Minority Collegiate Championships and earned Academic All American scholar honors by the National Golf Coaches Association is expected to contribute heavily as well as Bailey Mosier and Meredith Badali. “This fall has been a season of strong growth by our squad,” said Pat Kotten, Lady Monarch head coach. “This group has really put together an effort that they can build on this spring as they go after their fi rst CAA Championship.” ODU’s newcomers have already stepped in to give the Lady Monarchs more depth down the line. Heading the list of newcomers is Laura Holmes from Ireland who tied for 17th at the Draper Valley tournament and took 22nd at the Myrtle Beach event as well as 21st at the Lady Monarch tournament. Samantha Mosko from Plymouth, MN, and Rashelle Fetty from Enid, OK have also performed well this fall. “Each member of the squad has contributed this fall in a very positive way. CaptainAshley Davis has really become the true #1 player leading the team in scoring average and fi nally breaking through for her fi rst collegiate win. Freshman Laura Holmes has shown fl ashes of brilliance becoming only the second Lady Monarch to shoot even par or better and led the team to their fi rst 2 top 10 fi nishes. Sophmore Alexis Garduno worked hard to rehab her knee and came back stronger than last season fi nishing tied for 2nd in only her 2nd tournament back from surgery. Freshman Rashelle Fetty has played well, keeping her scoring average below 79. Junior Meghan Shaefer, Freshman Samantha Mosko and Sophomore Deztany Jackson have also contributed to our success on the course this fall. Last season, the Lady Monarchs had fi ve top ten fi nishes led by the fourth place at the Tribe Classic and the sixth place fi nish at the Bethune-Cookman Classic. With more talented depth ODU has already enjoyed three top ten performances this fall. ODU won its own Lady Monarch Invitational and took ninth at Draper Valley and Myrtle Beach. “This spring is one where continued growth is expected. While great strides were made in the fall, continued hard work is needed. If we continue the effort we made in the fall, this team has a legitimate shot at winning the CAA Championship this spring at The Homestead in April and taking the next step to the NCAA Regionals.”
