LINDA BURKHOLDER What’s for dinner?Where’s my mermaid Barbie? Did you find the other cat carrier? All four wisdom teeth.

Sloppy Joe’s and salad. Wherever you left it. No. I even looked in the attic. I’m thinking we sold it in a yard sale. It’s a good thing we still have dental insurance for you!

LONGHORNS TRADITION

When you first step into Darrell K Royal-Texas Memo-rial Stadium, you realize that you are part of one of the most legendary football stadiums in the country. Such names as Colt McCoy, Vince Young and other elite athletes, first come to mind. As the 2006 Rose Bowl Champions, lead by NFL QB from the Tennessee Titans, Vince Young, you should be proud to represent the Longhorns! In 2010, The Longhorns, led by Senior QB, Colt McCoy, fell short to the Alamaba Roll Tide. Al-though the Longhorns did not win the game, they made the school proud by competing in the biggest game of the year.

some lasting value. For the Graphic Design-er, this is problematic. To begin, most of our products are impermanent, and in many cases the substance of our messages has a shelf-life. Also, the desire to be relevant and impactful balances with the pragmatism of any serious profession. One such pragmatic truth is that the message of a design work is often not our own. Designers function as the Aaron the the client’s Moses, a mouthpiece for those who lack the gift of rhetoric. Plato had no great es-timation for Rhetoric or its practicioners, and it can be imagined that he would think any higher of the graphic designer. Still, the art of rhetoric, in the designer’s case a semiotic brand of it, resonates vastly in society. In the respect, the transcience of the design and its message is overcome by the consequences they produce. When seen as a catalyst for change, as an impetus to buy, vote, feel, or simply do, the power of design is apparent. Oscar Wilde proclaimed that all art is quite useless. The designer seeks to show otherwise.

I stand on the threshold of maturi-ty. At 24, it is long overdue. The pecu-liar thing about accomplishment is that

one can only recognize personal growth in retrospect. In the torrent of the artistic act, one sees only inadequacy and frustration. While sitting at the computer at two in the morning with a stress-induced eyelid twitch, I seldom see myself as progressing toward any significant event. The diffi-culty in appreciating one’s progression as an artist, or human being, is that progress is attached to milestones, some fabricated by society, and others occuring by nature. This is in many ways correct, yet the at-tainment of truth and self-mastery are not a result of reaching an event, but in the insights and struggles experienced in their attainment. The trajectory of human existence careens relentlessly to its own end. As an artist particularly fascinated with this cessation of being, I created a book that contained quotes and statistics on death. This was done in part to stave off my own overwhelming fears regarding death with the power of humor, as well as to cope with the futility of any human en-deavor on a cosmic scale. Any man is concerned with his legacy, both through progeny and through action. An artist is concerned with crafting an im-age or object that presumably possesses
