The Programme

• Three year programme started in September 2012

• One of the first ODP programmes in the UK to be delivered at

degree level

• The only one in Scotland

• 40:60 split between theory and practice

• First students due to graduate this year

Interprofessional learning

In each academic year some modules will be taken with other

students from the School of Health & Life Sciences

This will allow students to:

– become part of the wider student body

– become accustomed to collaborating with the other professional

groups that they be working with when they qualify

Demonstrate an understanding of the role & responsibilities of the student and registered ODP in relation to the HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics

– Observe and appreciate the role of the ODP in anaesthetic practice

– Observe and appreciate the role of the ODP in surgical practice

– Demonstrate appropriate levels of professional behaviour in practice

– Apply the principles of the HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance & Ethics to the role of the ODP including accountability, confidentiality & maintenance of patient dignity

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and processes involved in the delivery of safe perioperative care

– Demonstrate an understanding of perioperative infection control

– Identify and utilise the measures employed within the perioperative area which ensure patient safety

– Participate under supervision, in the receiving of patients for clinical procedures, including necessary documentation

Demonstrate engagement with the principles of effective communication in relation to patients, carers and the perioperative healthcare team and identify strategies to overcome barriers to communication

– Develop and utilise appropriate communication skills with patients and their carers

Describe the principles of patient assessment in relation to the respiratory and cardiovascular system:

– Assess and describe the patient’s cardiovascular and respiratory condition by observation

– Undertake and report results of non-invasive monitoring, specifically; blood pressure, pulse, ECG, respiratory rate and depth and oxygen saturation monitoring
