Omicron Delta Kappa was founded on Dec. 3,
1914 on the campus of Washington and Lee
University in Lexington, Va. The Society was
founded by a group of 15 students and faculty
who believed that leadership at the collegiate
level should be recognized and encouraged
across all phases of campus life. This general
principlethat scholarship alone couldnt
predict success, and that other intrinsic
qualities had value toobecame known as the
O!K Idea.
Initially, the founders had no intention of
extending the Society to other college
campuses. However, requests for charters began
to come in from local groups at The Johns
Hopkins University, the University of
Pittsburgh and Davidson College. It was clear
that the O!K Idea was one that could benefit
other institutions of higher learning. By 1917
just three years after founding the Washington
and Lee CircleOmicron Delta Kappa became
a national leadership honor society.
During World War I, O!K remained intact in
large part because of its faculty membersmany
of whom were too old to serve in the Army or
Navy. After the war when students returned to
their campuses, O!K continued to grow and
develop, chartering new circles at colleges and
universities across the country.

SPEAKER SERIES
William Dlugokienskiserves as the Assistant Dean of Students and Director o
the Gates Center, overseeing leadership and service programs. He advise
Student Government and chairs the Presidents Council of studen
organization Presidents. William also coordinates the Gates Leadershi
Scholars program as well as the Leadership Speaker Series and other campu
leadership workshops. In addition to this, he is currently the advisor for th
Omicron Delta Kappa Lake Forest College Circle.
Here is a friendly conversation with the brains behind the circle on campus.
Q.How did you get involved with Omicron Delta Kappa?
A. I got involved with the organization as an undergraduate, where I was inducted in 2001. At Lake Forest
College, the Gates Center had hoped to bring the organization to campus for the last two years. It is an
additional opportunity for involvement on campus and it is an honor society for campus leaders, which
did not exist previously. Last year was when we decided to pull the trigger and contact the National
Office. They seemed very interested and in about a semester we got official.
Q. During this process of setting Omicron Delta Kappa on campus, what surprised you the most?
A. The most surprising part of this process has been the number of students that are interested in thisorganization. For it being brand new, we always had to turn some students away because of the number o
members we can have. I think it is because of the prestige that comes with it, but nevertheless, I have bee
surprised as this does not happen commonly for a new organization. Moreover, there are leaders from all
around campus that make the selection extremely competitive.
Q. Where do you see this circle going in the next few years?
A. The next step is defining what programming will take place as well as balancing between active honor
society and just inducting leaders on campus. Over the next year, we plan to connect with non-Lake
Forest College O!Kmembers in the area and build a network with other colleges to have that supportand network from other O!Kmembers affiliates.
Q. Whats one piece of advice you would give to students interested in O!K?
A. Do it. Learn about the organization and make sure its a fit for you. Also, understand what reason you ar
interested in the organization for: if your are looking to actively involve in its programming or if you are
looking for the honor that comes with it. Both are fair reasons for applying, but it is important for the
circle to know your purpose.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Michelle Greenway is a junior at Lake Forest College. She plays for the Womens hockey an
soccer team at the college. Academically, she is currently studying Finance and Psychology. Thi
fall, she and her soccer team had a record-breaking season of 21-1 for the college. She was awarded
the Offensive Player of the Year, along with her soccer team sweeping all the awards this season
Recently, she was inducted in the Lake Forest College Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa.
Lets hear how she feels!
Q. Congratulations on your recent induction. Please
tell us about how you heard about O!K?
A. I knew someone in the circle before. They
recommended that I should try to apply as they were
taking new members. So, I checked out the
application and believed that I would be a good fit
for them. Hence, I filled the application out, sent it
in and soon found out that I was accepted. It is
exciting because I have a lot of athletic accolades,
which are always nice, but I thought O!K is an
honor recognizing leadership that I believe is one of
my stronger qualities.
Q. What are your goals as a member in the organization?
A. I definitely want to be a strong member and stay involved. Even though I am busy with school
and sports, I want to be an active member and help the organization in whatever way I can do.
As a result, I will learn a lot from it and use it as a building experience for myself.
Q. Did something surprise you when you first met all the other members?
A. Yes definitely, I saw a lot of new faces. I did know a few people but there were a lot I have never
met. I look forward to meeting them again and knowing more about them, especially how they
got to know about O!K and what they bring to the table.
Q. What are your future plans after Lake Forest College?
A. I am interested in graduate school for accounting to further my education. I also want to stay
close to the city to enhance my experience.
