Archery will always be a learning game. The least expensive way to learn is to learn from someone else’s mistakes. So, here is my most recent learning opportunity. I hope this saves someone else from making the same mistake. Last week, I took my bow out of my case for the second time this season, and went to a league night to shoot. I have had the same equipment for many years, and for that reason I didn’t feel the need to check my equipment before shooting. I stepped

Page 2: ODFW Corner ODFW Quiver for... · arrow, aimed, and pulled the trigger. What came next was a sound that made all of What came next was a sound that made all of the shooters jump,

up to the shooting line, and my first arrow flew just fine. I drew back my second arrow, aimed, and pulled the trigger. What came next was a sound that made all of the shooters jump, as we watched pieces of my arrow fall to the floor. After checking the rest of my arrows for more hairline fractures, I went to shoot my third arrow. I drew back, start aiming, and in the back of my mind I thought “this doesn’t look right”. I let down my arrow, and inspected my bow. After a closer look, my sight pins were broken – bent every which way, and my sight bubble had fallen out. First lesson: Always test your arrows before shooting. Ask your coach or a pro-shop to show you how to do a flex test, to listen for the sound of a crack in your arrow. My shot was lucky, in that the arrow went far enough forward that it did not hurt me or the people next to me. Carbon (or other arrow shaft materials) would not be fun to pick out of your skin and will most likely result in a hospital trip. Second lesson: Look over all of your equipment before shooting. Push or tap on things that are screwed onto your bow to make sure nothing has come loose and that you don’t hear anything rattling. Take a look at your limbs to make sure they are not cracked, your strings to make sure they aren’t dry or frayed, and your cams to make sure they haven’t been bent. Find a routine that works for you and get in the habit of checking over your bow each time before shooting. Third lesson: Pack your bow case nicely so that nothing is pushing against other pieces of equipment. I believe my back-up stabilizer became wedged underneath my sight, so that the pressure caused the pins to move, and then break. I don’t think this is how my arrow broke, but it is possible. On a better note, I already have my new sight and I’m ready to throw it on my bow and get re-sighted in so that I can be ready for outdoor tournaments this season. I hope this was a good reminder for everyone, and that it doesn’t happen to you! As always, if you have any questions or if there is anything I can help you with let me know. Happy Shooting,

S3DA Western Region Virtual Tournament

What is the S3DA Western Region Virtual Tournament? Being on the west side of the United States means that we have to drive a little further if we want to have a real tournament to compete with other states. The virtual tournament takes the traveling aspect out of the equation. How it works is that the archers have from March 1st – April 30th to turn in 4 official indoor scores. An official score consists of the archer declaring that they are shooting for an official score before shooting begins. There must be 3 S3DA members present (on the scorecard there is room for 1 shooter and 2 scorer signatures). These can be archers or coaches. S3DA tournaments are 6 ends of 5 arrows shot at a single/5-spot blue face target. Registration is open from now until March 15th. How can I compete in the S3DA Western Region Virtual Tournament?

1. Register as an S3DA student member at www.s3da.Sport80.com : $25 annual fee

2. Visit www.s3da.Sport80.com, go to events, and locate S3DA Western Region Virtual Tournament – Hosted in Oregon [$12 fee]

3. All scores must be shot at a range, club, or shop that holds a current S3DA membership or registers with Tournament director for the event.

4. Ranges, Clubs, or shops can email [email protected] to register for the event.

5. At least 3 S3DA members need to be present during official scoring. 6. Any questions can be sent to Stephanie Rustad, tournament director, at

[email protected]

Who are the current clubs/teams that are participating? If you are looking for other S3DA members to shoot with to have your 3 official signatures on your card, these are the tournament sites that have registered so far:

Asked & Answered

ODFW is here to help grow your archery program in any way that we can. Please submit questions to [email protected] and they may be featured in the next issue of the ODFW Quiver. Q: How do I find more opportunities for my archer to shoot their bow? A: There are many opportunities and formats for archers to shoot their bows. Some of these options are available year round, while some are time-specific. It is personal preference whether to focus on one area of archery, or to try multiple items off the list. Lessons: One-on-one between an instructor and an archer, or with an instructor may work with a group of archers. This would be for archers looking to improve their shooting form and technique.

Page 11: ODFW Corner ODFW Quiver for... · arrow, aimed, and pulled the trigger. What came next was a sound that made all of What came next was a sound that made all of the shooters jump,

Leagues: Similar to bowling leagues, archery leagues are usually a weekly event that a group of archers will get together to shoot with one another. These can be competitive or fun shooting. Clubs/Groups: All around the state there are archery clubs where archers can become a member. The membership benefits are usually access to indoor and/or outdoor range and the club/group will host: leagues, tournaments, and/or have open shooting. Check out: S3DA, NFAA, OBHA, JOAD, and NASP to find local groups near you. Open Shooting: An archer can go to a range and shoot without there being a scheduled tournament or event. A small fee may be charged to use the range. Tournaments: Archers shoot a pre-determined style of archery, and score each shot. Tournaments are a way for an archer to grow, both by competing against themselves and against others.

Indoor Target: Usually shot at 20 yards. There are a variety of targets that will be used for indoor shooting, the most popular are Blue-face and Multi-Color.

Outdoor Target: Used in S3DA, similar to USAA FITA tournaments and Olympic style archery. This tournament is usually held in a large field. The target faces and shooting distances vary on which organization is hosting the tournament.

Indoor 3D: The targets will be set up in a parallel line to the archers or in a v-formation. The archers move down the shooting line shooting a different target each round.

Outdoor 3D: The targets can be set-up similar to indoor, or on a roving course. Roving 3D courses are similar to golf courses, where the archer will travel along a path to each target location. It is popular to set up 3D courses following trail systems in the woods.

Field: Similar to Outdoor 3D – the archer will follow a walking course and shoot paper circle targets.

Safari: Usually held with a Field Tournament – the archer will follow a walking course and shoot paper animal targets.

Bow Hunting: The practice of hunting animals with a bow. Bow hunter education is available to be an ethical and safe bow hunter. Hunting seasons and regulations can be found in the Oregon Hunting Regulations. Bow Fishing: The practice of fishing with a bow.

Words from the Community

James B. We got our kit early last year, and had our first PE classes with grades 4-8. This year, with a new PE teacher that is incredibly helpful and supportive, we will have a more robust and lengthy opportunity to introduce and reinforce our archery skills. This in school program is run under the NASP guidelines, and begins after the Thanksgiving break. We are also offering an after school program, under a group 4H umbrella, so that we can also offer recurve equipment and instruction. For the in school PE program, we offer NASP training to approximately 25 students in grades 4 through 8 (~125 students). This year's program is scheduled for 2-3 weeks, 4 days per week, and select add-in dates throughout the rest of the year, as weather and scheduling permit. In the after school program, we draw between 4 and 18 students, dependent on conflicting athletics. The favorite shooting game at our in school program is Balloon Bust. There is a giddy sense of accomplishment, when the bubble pops! In our after school program, the favorite game is Big V. On a large piece of cardboard draw a large V, with the bottom about a 1/3 of the way up from the bottom. The game is to get as close to the bottom of the inside of the V, without touching the lines. It's harder than it looks! My favorite part of shooting is focusing my self-awareness, both physically and mentally. I shoot both indoors and outdoors, and have found that no matter where you are and what the shot is, it's still just You/Bow/Arrow, and your eternal desire to make every shot worth having been shot. I also derive great joy watching young archers come to the sport knowing nothing, and 3 days later are upset when they shy one out among the Smurfs from 7 yards. Their drive to excel is engaging and encouraging.
