STREAM REPORT
STREAM: Ben Smith Creek BASIN: Wilson River Basin DATES: June 26 – July 7, 2006 SURVEY CREW: Sally Gee and Sheri Etchemendy REPORT PREPARED BY: Peggy Kavanagh STREAM ORDER: 2 BASIN AREA: 8.7km2 FIRST ORDER TRIBUTARIES: 3 USGS MAPS: Jordan Creek ECOREGION: Coast Range Volcanic HUC NUMBER: 17100203 LLID: 1235194455903 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Ben Smith Creek habitat survey began at its confluence and extended 2841 meters
to end at a tributary junction. Second-growth timber (15-30cm dbh) and young trees (<15cm dbh) were the land uses. Rapids were the dominant instream habitat type. Substrate types were fairly uniformly present, with gravel being the most prominent. Trees found most frequently in the riparian zone were hardwoods 3-15cm dbh. Sword fern, salmonberry, red alder, and big leaf maple were ODF species of interest most commonly present. Wood volume for the creek was moderate. West Fork Ben Smith, which is at the start of reach 2, was also surveyed during 2006 summer.
REACH DESCRIPTIONS:
Reach 1: (T1N-R7W-S10NE) Length 563 meters. Reach 1 began at the Ben Smith Creek
confluence and extended to the confluence of West Fork Ben Smith Creek. The channel was constrained by terraces in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 9.0 (range: 2.2-20.0). Land use for the reach was second-growth timber. The average unit gradient was 3.8 percent. Stream habitat was primarily rapids (37%); dry units were present. Stream substrate was mainly gravel (35%). The percentage of fines in riffles was high (24%). Wood volume was 22.5m3/100m. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zone were hardwoods 3-15cm dbh (based on 2 riparian transects). ODF species of interest included sword fern, Douglas fir, red alder, and vine maple.
Reach 2: (T1N-R7W-S11NW) Length 371 meters. Reach 2 continued from the confluence of
West Fork Ben Smith Creek to a geomorphology change. The channel was constrained by terraces in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 7.8 (range: 6.0-10.0). Land use for the reach was second-growth timber. The average unit gradient was 3.4 percent. Stream habitat was dominated by rapids (60%); dry units were
present. Stream substrate was mainly gravel (37%) and fine sediment (32%). The percentage of fines in riffles was high (26%). Wood volume was 51.3m3/100m. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zone were hardwoods 3-15cm dbh and hardwoods 30-90cm dbh (based on 2 riparian transects). Salmonberry, sword fern, and red alder were ODF species of interest most frequently found in the riparian zones.
Reach 3: (T1N-R7W-S11SE) Length 1225 meters. Reach 3 continued until a land use change.
The channel was constrained by alternating hillslopes and high terraces in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 4.2 (range: 2.0-7.5). Land use for the reach was second-growth timber. The average unit gradient was 4.8 percent. Stream habitat was primarily rapids (50%); dry units were present. Stream substrate was a mix of fine sediment (27%), gravel (33%), cobble (23%), and boulder (16%). The percentage of fines in riffles was moderate (20%). Wood volume was 57.6m3/100m. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zone were hardwoods 30-50cm dbh (based on 4 riparian transects). Sword fern and red alder were ODF species of interest found frequently in the riparian zone.
Reach 4: (T1N-R7W-S14NE) Length 682 meters. Reach 4 extended to a tributary. The channel
was constrained by alternating hillslopes and high terraces in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 3.3 (range: 1.5-5.0). Land use for the reach was young trees. The average unit gradient was 12.0 percent. Stream habitat was primarily rapids (24%), cascades (29%), and dry units (28%). Stream substrate was a mix of fine sediment (21%), gravel (29%), cobble (20%), and boulder (21%). Wood volume was 23.7m3/100m. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zone were hardwoods 3-15cm dbh (based on 3 riparian transects). ODF species of interest most frequently recorded in the riparian transects were sword fern, red alder, big leaf maple, and Douglas fir.
COMMENTS: The crew observed fish throughout the survey until unit 302 (2818 meters); however, the upper
fish distribution was not determined. There were three potential barriers to upstream fish migration in the surveyed length. Unit 234
(2126m) was a step-over-boulder 1.0m high; unit 250 (2212m) step-over-log was 4.0m high; and unit 296 (2801m) was 2.8m high step-over-bedrock.
There were a couple of habitat structures in the surveyed length. There were habitat and fish study signs observed. The crew did not properly measure high terraces; therefore terrace height and width data are
incomplete. The reach calls are valid.
