ODFW AQUATIC INVENTORY PROJECT STREAM REPORT STREAM: North Roy Creek LLID: 1239723447946 BASIN: Siletz River HUC NUMBER: 17100204 DATES: August 11- 17, 2011 SURVEY CREW: Kip Woods / Mark Stone REPORT PREPARED BY: Staci Stein STREAM ORDER: 2 BASIN AREA: 3.4 km 2 FIRST ORDER TRIBUTARIES: 1 USGS MAPS: Mowery Landing ECOREGION: Coast Range Sitka Spruce REACH DESCRIPTION: (T09S-R11W-S13NE) Length 2078 meters. The North Roy Creek survey began at the confluence with Roy Creek and continued upstream to a major unnamed tributary junction that contributed 50% of the flow. The channel was constrained by terraces in a broad valley floor. There was 105 meters of secondary channel habitat. The average valley width index was 8.0 (range: 4.0-10.0). Land uses were second growth timber and mature trees. The average unit gradient was 0.6 percent. The stream habitat was primarily scour pool (46%) and beaver dammed pools (37%). The stream substrate was silt and organic fines (46%), sand (38%), and gravel (16%). Nineteen percent of the stream banks had undercut. Large wood debris volume was 48.3m 3 /100m of stream length. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zone were hardwoods 30-90cm dbh (based on six riparian transects). Doug fir, elderberry, hawthorn, and cascara were noted in the riparian zone. COMMENTS: This is a very low gradient stream with many beaver ponds. Coho and trout were observed and spawning gravel was noted; however, most of the substrate was mud and silt. Additional wildlife observed included rough skinned newt, crawdad, red-legged frog, and both abandoned and active beaver activity. The riparian was healthy with large, older trees. The crew commented on the large available area of rearing habitat and the little amount of spawning habitat. There were many wood debris jams noted throughout the survey. Roy Creek and South Roy Creek were surveyed 2011 summer as well.
