We have a lot to be enthusiastic about as we head into the 2018 spring sports season. These young men have been working hard this offseason; I am so proud of their hard work and dedication. As a staff we will continue to develop these young men into leaders, and challenge them to be the best they can be both in and out of the classroom.

The O’Dea Fighting Irish Baseball Team is excited to begin the 2018

season. These young men look to build off a successful 2017 run where

they earned a #1 seed for the Metro League Tournament, and a trip

to the State Regionals in Pasco. This year’s team is led by returning

1st Team All-Metro senior, JJ Engman, as well as returners Leo

Rivera, Ben Larson, Joey Butler, Bror Grondal and some very talented

underclassmen. The young men that represent the Baseball Program are working hard to

prepare themselves for a successful season, building comradery and extending the O’Dea

Brotherhood to the diamond, in the hopes of bringing back home the Metro and State Titles.

Michael Doyle // VARSITY HEAD COACH

Coach Mike Doyle, O’Dea class of 1997, has been the Head Baseball Coach at O’Dea High School for 11 years, after 6 years serving as an assistant coach in the program. During Coach Doyle’s tenure, the Irish have amassed 151 wins to 72 losses, a .677 winning percentage, a 15-5 State Tournament record, 3- WIAA 3A State Titles (2009, 2010, 2014), and 2 consecutive Metro League titles (2014, 2015). Throughout his tenure, Coach Doyle has been recognized as the 2009 Metro Coach of the Year and Associated Press 3A State Coach of the Year, 2010 Washington State Baseball Coaches Association All State Coach, 2014 Seattle Times - Star Times Coach of the Year, and the 2015 Northwest Baseball Umpires Association Coach of the Year. After completing his Bachelor’s Degree in History at Gonzaga University, Coach Doyle completed his student teaching at O’Dea, and has been a full-time faculty member since 2007. He is Limerick House Dean and teaches 11th grade United States History, as well as Elective Courses Modern American History, and Confl ict in the 20th Century. Coach Doyle shares in his baseball passion with his wife Brittany and children Barrett and Caprice.

Head Coach Drew Snider and the O’Dea High

School Lacrosse Program are looking forward

to a challenging 2018 season and to build off

the momentum of a successful 2017 campaign.

The Irish fi nished as Metro league champions

and moved on in the playoffs to the private

school league state championship game. While the outcome was

not what the Irish had hoped for, the experience will serve them

well this season and beyond. Expectations are high for 2018 to

compete for an opportunity to play for a state championship. Coach

Snider has put together a solid coaching staff to teach and prepare

the boys this season. Accompanying Coach Snider (Maryland)

is Craig Snyder (U.S.Naval Academy), Kris Snider (Virginia), Eli

Gobrecht (Ithaca), BJ Grill ( Marquette) and John O’Neill (Cornell).

Drew Snider // VARSITY HEAD COACH

Head Coach Drew Snider started the O’Dea High School Lacrosse Program in 2014. In 2016, Snider led the Irish to their first D1 playoff and ultimately losing in the Elite-8. Drew led the Irish to their first ever State Championship game in 2017. Drew graduated from O’Dea in 2006 as a two-time All-American and went on to play at the University of Maryland. At Maryland Snider led his team to two NCAA Div. I National Championship appearances being crowned captain his senior season. After Maryland, Snider was drafted by Major League Lacrosse’s Denver Outlaws and won a world championship in 2014. Snider was named captain of the team in2016, and he led them to their second MLL Championship that same year. On the international level, Snider is currently on the active roster of Team U.S.A Lacrosse as a midfielder. He will represent the United States in the 2018 World Lacrosse Tournament that will be played this summer in Netanya, Israel July 12-21 2018. A terrific honor for Snider. Drew is also an assistant coach at University of Washington and has recently founded a youth lacrosse organization called CitySideLax.

The O’Dea Soccer team is looking

to continue their success as they

enter the 2018 season. Despite

the graduation of nine seniors from

last year’s division champions, the

program returns six starters including Senior captains

Teddy Nickerson, Derivan Dockter, Stephen Scheer and

reigning Player of the Year, Banks Telkamp, as well as

talented Juniors Aaron Craddock and Matthew Suk. This

year’s team is focused on continuing to play an attacking,

fl uid-style offense, building champions both on and

off the fi eld, and bringing home the league and state

championships.

Kevin Fieser // VARSITY HEAD COACH

Coach Kevin Fieser has been the Head Coach at O’Dea High School since 2014 and is the youngest coach to have been voted Coach of the Year for the Metro League in the last 15 years. Coach Fieser graduated from O’Dea in 2004 as a four-year letter-winner and 4-time all-league selection. He fi nished his career in the top 5 in assists and was twice voted team MVP and Most Inspirational Player. In his eleven years coaching, Fieser’s teams have won 5 division titles and he has led his team to the playoffs in 13 out of the past 14 seasons. When he is not coaching, Kevin is studying Math and Engineering, works as a supervisor at a local retailer, and enjoys supporting the Sounders, hiking, and spending time with his wife, Gina and dog, Ozzie.

Welcome to another exciting season of Fighting Irish Tennis! Our 2018 squad has four returning varsity players: John Misel, Cody Peterson, Charles Long and Jack Hillyer. Additionally, the Irish adds top nationally ranked junior player, Thomas Paulsell, to the squad. These young men look to lead a talented team to another successful season in a competitive Metro League.

Todd Jordan // VARSITY HEAD COACH

Coach Todd Jordan is entering his third season as the Head Coach of the Fighting Irish Tennis Team. Todd has over 25 years of tennis coaching experience. He spent 15 years coaching tennis in San Diego where he was a high school coach at Rancho Bernardo High School and also ran his own junior academy. Currently when Todd is not at O’Dea, he coaches all levels and ages of players at Tennis Center Sand Point and Sand Point Country Club. Additionally, Todd still competes regularly in local and national tournaments and he is currently the top ranked player in the Men’s 45’s singles division in the Pacifi c Northwest.

Our Fighting Irish Track and Field team is full of skilled and talented athletes that are ready to carry on the tradition. Last year’s team fi nished 5th at State and many of our top competitors graduated. This opens the door for a new wave of athletes to step up and make a name for themselves. Leading the way for our distance group will be seniors Isaac Mohn (800, 1600, 3200), Andrew Hogan (1600, 3200), and Sean Lewis (800, 4 x 400). Their experience will benefi t them and the up-and-coming group of young runners. Myles Klingler

and Griffi n Korican are our returning senior shot putters and are expected to come up big for us at Metros this year. Our pole vaulters have been showing great improvement over the last couple years. Milo Malkoski is the most experienced member of this cohort. He is poised to make a strong run to state for his senior year. Our sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers are still young and improving. We, of course, have a rich history in these events, but the question remains, who will carry on the legacy? With the talented pool of young athletes, it will be fun to see who will step up to the challenge.

Vince Butorac / / VARSITY HEAD COACH

Vince Butorac has been O’Dea’s Head Track & Field coach since 2015 after spending the previous six years as an assistant coach at O’Dea. In his three years as the head coach the Irish have won two Metro League titles, produced six individual state champions, 12 top 8 placers at state in other events, and fi nished each year in the top 8 at the state track meet as a team. Coach Butorac has a total of 17 years of coaching experience (Kent and Mexico City) and ten years of experience as an athlete (Elma HS and Central Washington University). Over the course of his coaching career he has worked with throwers, sprinters, and hurdlers, but his area of expertise is coaching the jumps. Off the track, Coach Butorac serves as the Chemistry teacher at O’Dea. He and his wife Courtney have two young boys, Leo and Mario, that love to be around the track.
