Museum Heist of Worlds largest Gold Coin

The trial is underway for the theft of one of the largest gold coins in existence. In fact at one point it was the largest one. Mints produce coinage that do represent legal tender, but also create ones which are meant to commemorate something or to be collected. In 2007 The Canadian mint pro-duced a limited six-coin run of coins called the Big Maple Leaf. The BMLs had a face value of $1 million, and at the time of their production, they were the largest gold coins in the world (the Perth Mint in Australia made a larger coin in 2012), being over an inch thick and about 20 inches across. The coins were made of 99.99% pure gold, and each one weighed just over 220 pounds, according to the online coin collection site Edmonton Collections. The back of the coins features an image of the Canadian maple leaf, designed by Stan Witten, and artist and engraver from the Canadian Mint, and the front holds a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed by Susanna Blunt. journalists stand next to the world’s biggest gold coin, called the Australian kangaroo at the Baden-Wuerttembergische Bank in Stuttgart, Germany. The coin has a diameter of about 80 cm and weighs about a ton. The coin is worth more than 30 million euros. Photo: Sebastian Kahnert/dpa | usage worldwide One of the BMLs was kept in storage at the mint, and the other five were made available for sale. Of those five, one went to Queen Elizabeth, one was sold to a Spanish trading company called Oro Direct. Two more were sold to unknown buyers in the United Arab Emirates, and the final coin by purchased by a Mr. Fuchsmann, who lent the coin to the Bode Museum in Berlin in 2010. In March 2017 the BML on display at the museum was stolen. A group of thieves got the coin out a window, down a ladder, and into a waiting vehicle to be carried away. Four men believed to be involved in the heist were eventually caught, but the coin itself was never recovered. Visitors stand next to the world’s biggest gold coin, the 1-ton Australian kangaroo, worth 30 million eurosusage worldwide It’s unlikely that the coin can be found. Despite its face value being $1 mil-lion, the quantity and purity of the gold it was made of give it an actual value of somewhere in the area of $4 million, depending on the price of gold at any given time. It’s most likely that the thieves simply melted the coin down and sold it the gold off. The trial for the men who perpetrated the theft is currently underway. 2 men received 41/2 yrs and a third 3ys 4mon

Treasure hunters find Britain's largest ancient coin hoard

Treasure hunters find Britain's largest ancient coin hoard after discovering 69,347 Roman and Celtic pieces buried 3ft under a hedge in Jersey Their find of gold and silver coins has been dated to around the first century BC Trumps the previous find of 54,951 Iron Age coins made in Wiltshire in 1978 By Luke Andrews For Mailonline Published: 05:56 EST, 2 February 2020 | Treasure hunters have set a record for the largest coin hoard discovered in the British Isles after unearthing 69,347 Roman and Celtic coins that were buried three feet beneath a hedge in Jersey, Channel Isles. Metal detectorists Reg Mead and Richard Miles spent 30 years searching the field for the £10million treasure after a woman de-scribed seeing what looked like silver buttons in the area. Their find - made in 2012 - trumps the previous record holding discovery of 54,951 Iron Age coins unearthed in Wiltshire in 1978. largest coin hoard of gold and silver pieces was found under a hedge on Jersey in the Channel Islands" Britain's largest coin hoard of gold and silver pieces was found under a hedge on Jersey in the Channel Islands

'We are not surprised at this achievement and are delighted that such an impressive archaeological item was discovered, examined and displayed in Jersey,' said curator of archaeology at Jersey Heritage Olga Finch. 'Once again, it puts our Island in the spotlight of international research of Iron Age coinage and demonstrates the world class heritage that Jersey has to offer.' Mr Miles said he and Mr Mead had been involved in the process the whole way through and described receiving the Guinness World Record certificates as 'lovely'.

Museum Neil Mahrer begins to carefully dig the silver and gold Conservator for the Jersey Heritage "Pictured above are some of the coins after they were restored. They were declared a 'treasure' under the Treasure Act 1996, which means they officially belong to the Queen, although the finders are entitled to a reward. Mr Mead has said that the least valuable coins in the hoard are likely to be worth £100 each, suggesting a valua-tion of several million pounds, without taking into account the precious jewellery also found in it. However, there has been discussion over whether the price would come down because so many coins had been found, reducing their rarity. The previous largest coin hoard from Wiltshire was discovered in 1978 at the former Roman town of Cunetio near to Mildenhall. The largest hoard of coins ever found in the world was in Brus-sels in 1908 with 150,000 silver medieval pennies from the 13th Century uncovered.
