ODBC REGATTA COMMITTEE: 2017 ODBC CUP INVITATIONAL REGATTA Liz Beckman

The ODBC Regatta Committee is pleased to announce the 2nd annual ODBC Cup Invitational Regatta to be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017. Skippers and crew from seven countries have been invited to participate in a series of sailboat races on the Potomac River in front of the club. ODBC will represent the U.S. in an attempt to repeat last years decisive win over teams from three other countries. To help kick things off, ODBC leadership will host an opening reception for skippers and crew at the club on Friday, August 18. On Saturday at 9am, President Richard Banchoff will lead competitors in a champagne toast prior to the start of the first race at 10am. Following the races, ODBC will host competitors and guests at the awards ceremony and cookout. COMMODORES REPORT: BURGEE TRANSITION TO THE NEW CLUBHOUSE Bill Gard Most yacht/boat clubs around the world identify themselves by unique pennants, or burgees. A popular tradition among boaters who are traveling is to visit local yacht clubs and boat clubs and while there, exchange burgees with boaters from those clubs. Old Dominion Boat Club has participated in this ritual for many years and we have collected over two hundred and fifty burgees from around the world. Our collection was formalized, organized and expanded in 1997 by former Commodores

. We have burgees from Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii, Europe and many more states, countries and continents. Our ODBC burgee has flown over the North Pole and over the Washington Monument (there are photos of these in the tap room). The current construction schedule for the new ODBC Clubhouse anticipates occupancy beginning in mid-September of this year. At that point, the club will have 60 days to transition from the old clubhouse to the new facility.

Top: Burgee Display in ODBC Taproom Bottom: New Taproom Rendering with Burgees

The architects rendering above of the new Taproom shows burgees mounted on parallel wires adjacent to 18 ceiling beams, but in the real world we will have burgees mounted on burgee staffs inserted into 4 rails attached to 6 ceiling beams around the perimeter of the bar. To accommodate the burgee transition, Forrester Construction, ODBCs general contractor, will fabricate, finish and install 200 linear feet of pre-drilled trim rails for mounting the burgees. At 6 on center, 200 feet of mounting rails will accommodate approximately 400 burgees.

. For twenty years, an average of 12 burgees per year have been added. Thus the 200 feet of rail installation will give us room for twelve years of burgee expansion. For the upcoming move, well procure enough materialsdowels, finials, hooks, etc. -- to install 300 burgees, enough for expansion for the next four years. To install the burgees, the plan is for ODBC volunteers to inventory, clean, organize, move and mount the collection on newly assembled burgee staffs. There are quite a few steps involved in executing the plan, including

Ensuring the existing display conforms with the burgee log and updating the log or the display as necessary;

Cleaning the burgees;

Procuring dowels and cup hooks, and cutting the dowels to size to fit

their new locations;

Attaching finials to the dowels and staining the assembled burgee staff;

Drilling pilot holes for the cup hooks from which the burgees will

hang, and attaching the 600 cup hooks;

Attaching the sequenced burgee collection to assembled burgee staffs;

Moving and installing the burgees in the new Tap Room.

Your suggested changes or additions to the plan are welcome. To comment or volunteer, email Bill Gard at [email protected]

FROM THE HOT DECK OF THE SOCIAL CHAIRMAN Bob Waters

Our June 3rd Lawn & Dock party was a great success for the following six reasons: 1. The outstanding efforts of those social committee members who dedicated their time preparing and setting up this event for all of our members to enjoy. 2. Participating Boaters who selflessly provided great apps/drinks etc. for all guests at their expense. 3. The volunteers who helped the day of the event with Raffle, ticket taking and as food servers. 4. Our club staff that prepared all of the food and table set up/tear down. 5. Mother Nature in providing outstanding weather. (Lets hope she does the same on July 15th) 6. And lastly, the ODBC members and their guests who purchased tickets (Sold Out event) and attended the last L&D at our current location. All seemed to enjoy themselves immensely. Non-Member Guest Limit Reminder Id like to remind all members that in accordance with our ODBC rules, members are allowed up to six (local) non-member guests per month, including social events. (Does not include the members spouse/significant other) One rationale behind this is so that members have sufficient space, whether in the Tap Room or at an event. It also precludes a member from monopolizing an event with his/her guests to the point that other members cannot attend due to space/ticket availability during social events. You can read the full non-member guest rules on our website under House and Ground Rules, Art II. Tier-Level Event Tickets At the June 5th General Membership meeting, a member questioned why we dont sell tier-level tickets for certain social events. After discussing at the June 8th social committee meeting, the social committee unanimously decided not to have tier-level tickets/tickets sold for after-dinner only. This would reduce the number of folks buying full price tickets, which will be required in

order to plan and pay in advance for the food/labor, band, entertainment, decorations etc. It will also require extra member volunteers to set up and man this endeavor. And there would be less comfortable space for those who purchased the full event ticket. Additionally, the unknown extra people would not be able to attend after they purchased tier tickets should the event be moved inside due to weather. The latter could not be accommodated due to Fire Marshal room headcount capacity. Why do we limit the number of Social event tickets for sale? One main reason tickets are limited is due to Fire Marshal headcount capacity for our inside rooms. Safety first!! So if we have an outdoor event, which can hold a greater number of folks, we always have to keep in mind the contingency of where would we hold the event inside in case of inclement weather? We also only have limited tables/chairs on hand and limiting tickets helps us to program food quantities. This will be more important as we move to our new clubhouse, as our room sizes are smaller thus less people capacity by Fire Marshal count. Luau, July 15th And finally, a pitch to get your July 15 Luau tickets early. If you wait until the last minute the odds are that they will be sold out. This will be our last Luau at this location and we are planning on it to be the best ever! Again, tickets will be limited. There will be a wait list for those who waited too long but the odds are slim of a member wanting to sell their ticket(s).
