outrage and even a lawsuit, before NARAS reinstated Latin jazz back into the system. In the end,Latin jazz musicians gained strength and unity from this experience, making the genre evenstronger, more versatile and universal than ever.

In order to pinpointing the genesis of Latin jazz or, to be more precise, Afro-Cuban jazz (as it wasoriginal known), we have to go back to the early days of jazz and the music of Jelly Roll Morton, who utilized Cuban habanera elements in his 1920s compositions, an approach he called "theSpanish tinge." He indicated that his "Spanish tinge" was an integral part of the formation of jazzmusic. Shorthly thereafter, the Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol composed a jazz standard,"Caravan" that also revealed such "Spanish tinge", but was not clave-based. While directing thebig band known as Machito and his Afro-Cubans in 1943, Mario Bauzá penned the score titled"Tanga", which is regarded as the first true Latin jazz composition written within the 2-3 Cubanclave meter.

In 1947, bebop innovator and jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, along with Cuban conga drummerChano Pozo, wrote "Manteca," the first jazz standard to be rhythmically based on the Cubanclave. The partnership of Gillespie and Pozo somewhat internationalized the new Afro-Cuban jazzmovement, which they baptized as "cubop", in reference to the fusion of bebop with Afro-Cubanrhythms. From this point on, the marriage of jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms started gaining fansand popularity all over the world.

Drummer/vibraphonist Cal Tjader came onto the scene in the early 1950s and featured a youngCuban conga player by the name of Mongo Santamaría and his percussive Nuyorican protégéWillie Bobo. In Spanish Harlem, two young musicians, both going by the same nickname "Tito"(Puente and Rodríguez) were battling it out at the legendary Palladium nightclub in New York Citynext to their idol Frank Grillo, better known as Machito. Many others followed, including Charlieand Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Sabú Martínez, Cándido Camero, and Patato Valdés, tomention but a few.

In Brazil, the West Coast cool jazz movement had inspired bossa nova movement that emergedin the mid-1950s and was nourished by the samba rhythms. By the early 1960s, bossa novagained worldwide popularity, under the leadership of Antonio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto andStan Getz.

After the initial participation of Cuban musicians and rhythms into the Latin jazz musical stew,Cuban musicians living in Cuba were mostly forgotten after the establishment of the U.S."embargo" in the early 1960s, with very few making an impact in Latin jazz until the emergence ofthe group Irakere in the mid-1970s. Led by pianist Chucho Valdés, Irakere featured PaquitoD'Rivera and Arturo Sandoval among several other top Cuban players In addition, Cuba hasbeen musically represented in the U.S. by Mongo Santamaría, Chico O'Farrill, Israel "Cachao"López, Cándido Camero, Armando Peraza, Chino Pozo, Patato Valdés, and Francisco Aguabella,(and later by Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, and subsequent musical defectors.).

Today, Latin jazz has no set boundaries, limitations or set conditions. The new blends include a

wide range of forms and genres from Latin America, the Antilles, and the Iberian Peninsula, including but not limited to Andalucian flamenco, Argentinean tango and milonga, Afro-Peruvianlandó, Colombian cumbia, Venezulean vals, and multilingual rhythms from all the islands in theCaribbean.

In 1993, trombonist/bandleader William Cepeda proclaimed his music to be "Afro-Rican jazz"(blending the traditional rhythms of Afro-Puerto Rican music with jazz). Latin jazz bands arecalling home places such as Japan, Sweden, France, Great Britain, Australia, and Holland, justto name but a few. Some Latin jazz artists you need to check out, aside from the alreadymentioned, include the Fort Apache Band, Bongó Logic, Jane Bunnett, Michel Camilo, ChanoDomínguez, Caribbean Jazz Project, Cubanismo, Jorge Dalto, Frank Emilio, Hilario Durán,Giovanni Hidalgo, Mark Levine, Clare Fischer, Danilo Pérez, Hilton Ruiz, Bobby Sanabria,Sonido Isleño, Batacumbele, John Santos, Papo Vásquez, Orlando "Maraca" Valle, BobbyMatos, Azymuth, Henry Cole, and Miguel Zenón.

The following are three Latin jazz acts that are enjoying new live groundbreaking recordings as ofthis writing. Two of them are veteran West Coast bandleaders and household names in the worldof Latin jazz (Poncho Sánchez and Pete Escovedo) and the third one is one of the topprogressive and experimental new Latin jazz bands in the scene: Ninety Miles (featuring DavidSánchez, Stefon Harris and Christian Scott).

Vibraphonist Stefon Harris (a four-time Grammy-nominee from Albany, New York), saxophonistDavid Sánchez (a Grammy recipient, native of Puerto Rico) and Christian Scott (a Grammy-nominated trumpeter from New Orleans) front the group "Ninety Miles" — an adventurouscollaborative project which bridges jazz modalities with the rhythms of the Caribbean, reaffirmingthe powerful forces of today's Latin jazz. By the way, ninety miles is the distance separating theFlorida Keys from Cuba. It's the gap that keeps two people apart due to political differences, butcannot separate the joy, love and passion for music shared by both sides.

Recorded live on May 18, 2010, at Havana's Teatro Amadeo Roldán during the annual festivalcalled Cubadisco, "Ninety Miles — Live At Cubadisco" captures the profound musical eloquenceof these young lions of jazz with a little help from some highly talented Cuban musicians such aspianists/bandleaders Harold López-Nussa and Rember Duharte.

Trombonist and musical director Francisco Torres has been urging Sánchez to do this medley forthe past ten years. Now that it's done, Poncho says he's already working on another one for hisnext recording. Other tracks in this Latin jazz dance party pay homage to two of Sánchez'sbiggest influences: keyboardist, composer, arranger Clare Fischer and Latin percussion iconMongo Santamaría. He chose Fischer's composition "Morning," which appeared in Sánchez'sfirst debut recording as a leader for the Discovery label before joining Concord in 1982. Ponchodelivers a fiery high-octane rendition of the classic "Afro Blue" in memory of his good friend andmentor Mongo Santamaría. Closing the recording is the tasty dance-friendly "Son Son Chararí,"which Sánchez introduces by saying "Alright, it's time for a little salsa!" This recording wasdigitally released on September 25, 2012 by Concord Picante. Poncho Sánchez will be receivinga Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Latin Grammy Awards celebration in Las Vegas,Nevada.

The new album sizzles with gems such as the Tito Puente classic "Picadillo Jam," showcasingPete's mastering of the timbal. As a matter of fact, the entire percussion section is awesomethroughout the concert. This recording also highlights a couple of excellent guitarists: MichaelAngel Alvarado (showcased on the selections "Take Some Time" and "True or False") and RayObiedo, appearing on the tasty track "Brasiliero." The crowd is on its feet and dancing by thesecond bar of "Dance," an original salsa score by the Escovedos, featuring Sheila E on theconga drums, cooking with intensity and mucho sabor. Pete grabs the mic and sings lead on thejazz standard "Fly Me to the Moon," arranged with a Latin tinge, while Sheila E returns to playcongas on "Sólo Tú," literally ripping the skins with her aggressively controlled attack on thedrums.

The concert is also enriched with a couple of guests: Dave Koz (saxophone solo on theselection "True or False") and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, the latter of whom delivers a dazzlingperformance on the closing track "Sueños de los Torreros", "Live From Stern Grove Festival wasdigitally released on September 25, 2012 by Concord Picante. Directly from Brazil, the group "Ted and Pablo Choro Ensemble" delighted the crowd with itsunique acoustic raw sounds of Brazilian choro and forro rhythms. Comprised of Ted Falcon(violin, mandolin), Pablo Fagundes (harmonica), Marcus Moraes (guitar), and George Lacerda(percussion), the group was joined by special guests Chalo Eduardo (percussion), and dancersFransini Giraldo, Sambabody, and Arastao Maree. The group's instrumental repertoire wasenjoyed by everyone, setting the tone for an amazing evening of world music.

"The Plaza de la Raza Youth Mariachi Ensemble" followed, bringing the powerful sounds ofmariachi music to the festival. First place winners of the 2012 Mission San Juan Capistrano's"Battle of the Mariachis," this mariachi ensemble is the result of 15 years of mariachi instructionat Plaza de la Raza in Los Angeles which began with a National Endowment for the Arts grant forsummer workshops in the inner city. Under the musical direction of Ireneo Yañez and MariaJimenez-Torres, the coed mariachi group rocked the house with its refined talents and majesticvocal interpretations. Bravo!

Bringing the festival to intermission was the group "Incendio," taking the stage as the nightembraced the evening and the celestial light show came alive. Labeled as "Latin Guitar WorldFusion," the five-piece ensemble delivered an explosive and energetic set of magical guitars andpercussive-based original compositions. Incendio featured Jim Stubblefield and Jean-PierreDurand (guitars), Liza Carbé (bass), Nicole Falzone (drums), and Bryan Brock (percussion).

After intermission, the stage was set for the festival's headliner, "The Louie Cruz Beltran LatinJazz Orchestra." Led by percussionist/bandleader Louie Cruz Beltran, who has enjoyed anoutstanding year since his release of "Paint The Rhythm" (November, 2011); performed at the34th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival at The Hollywood Bowl, at numerous festivals throughout theWest Coast summer season, and for the fourth consecutive time headlined La Vida MusicFestival. The eight-piece orchestra featured Carlos Vivas (piano), Tomas Gargano (bass), NickMancini (vibes), Justin Janer (sax/flute), Jimmy Loya (trumpet), Kenny Elliott (drums), and ChaloEduardo sharing percussion duties with Beltran. As a bonus, Beltran also featured four youngmusicians from Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA), an organization that promotesthe integration of music into the curriculum of disadvantaged schools in order to enhancestudents' academic performance and creative development. These students included VictoriaLanier (violin), Sarah Villegas (violin), Sunny Smith (violin), and Ehrben Tellez (cello).

While The Louie Cruz Beltran Latin Jazz Orchestra performance was top-notch as always, resulting in colorful and flavorful solos from Beltran and his talented bunch of musicians, I felt alittle disappointed that he chose to perform a repertoire of jazz standards and I yearned to listento some of the material from his latest CD production "Paint the Rhythm."
