pia Drive site was closed. Many resi-dents expressed the desire for a new site which prompted staff to work on locating one, but residents impacted by this potential new site expressed concerns for the location and the overall review process. The Grounds & Facilities Committee and staff met, heard directly from residents and will provide this feedback directly to the BCA Board. Ultimately, the BCA Board will review all this information and do what they believe is in the best inter-est of the Association and entire com-munity.

Another situation that is before the entire community is the active and open investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Offi ce (LCSO) to fi nd the individual(s) that are vandaliz-ing our community amenities and assets with disparaging racial mes-

Keeping the Unity in CommunityA MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Living in an urban community, such as Brambleton, off ers an attractive and rewarding lifestyle. With all of these benefi ts, there are also some challenges. How does a commu-nity as large, complex and diverse as Brambleton keep the Unity in Com-munity? The answer to that question is as complex and diverse as our com-munity is.

Today there are more than 4,200 homes with more than 16,000 resi-dents. To put this number in per-spective, Brambleton is larger than the combined total of these six Lou-doun County incorporated towns: Hamilton, Hillsboro, Lovettsville, Middleburg, Purcellville, and Round Hill. Brambleton is rapidly growing and has the potential to grow over the next 10 years to 9,000 homes or nearly 40,000 residents; that is nearly

the size of Leesburg. Our Bramble-ton neighbors are of many diff erent ethnic races, varying backgrounds, religions, family confi gurations, po-litical affi liations, numerous personal interests and aged from 0 to 100+. So how does a homeowners association keep the needs, interests, and desires of its residents while simultaneously acting on and balancing the needs of the entire community with its core responsibilities that are outlined in its governing documents?

This is a question that the Brambleton Community Association (BCA) Board and staff often fi nd asking them-selves and each other. The process with the search for a new site for the dog park was a good example of that balancing act. Simply summarized, there is a need to fi nd a home for a new dog park being that the Olym-

uniting residents of all ages through a diverse off ering of events, programs and recreational opportunities. A large portion of the budget goes to-wards the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds and facilities that resi-dents enjoys as they walk, jog, run, ride or drive through the commu-nity. Brambleton’s diverse off ering of services to its residents remains a strong sense and identity of our com-munity. You can’t have Unity without COMMunication. This year’s budget continues the Association’s commit-ment to communication by funding our website, newsletters, new home-owner magazine and other related items. And last but not least, a com-munity the size of Brambleton needs a professional staff that is dedicated and committed to unity within the community. There are plans in the 2015 budget to minimally expand the staff to keep up with the growth of the community so that the services off ered to the residents do not suff er or lessen as we grow.

So I’ve mentioned a lot about unity and how it’s important to our commu-

sages. This is unfortunate and BCA's Board has taken this situation very seriously. Acts such as this can’t be tolerated. In an eff ort to keep Unity in Community, the Board has off ered a $500 reward for information lead ing to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) who are responsible for these acts. BCA and LCSO are actively working together to bring an end to this. Anyone with information about these acts of vandalism is asked to contact Deputy First Class R. Ortutay at 571-246-4156 or via e-mail at [email protected]. Callers wish-ing to remain anonymous are asked to call Loudoun Crime Solvers at 703-777-1919.

I just recently fi nished drafting the 2015 BCA Budget for the Board of Di-rectors to consider adopting for next year. In this draft budget, as well as past budgets, there are many items within the budget that helps keep Unity in Community. The items in the budget are as diverse as the com-munity. Brambleton has a strong Lifestyles Department which is dedi-cated to creating community and

nity. When preparing for this article I actually looked up Webster’s defi ni-tion of Unity and there were several meanings for the word but two stood out from my perspective as general manager. Those were 1) a condition of harmony; 2) a totality of related parts; an entity that is a complex or systematic whole. Our Community is certainly complex as it has numerous parts that are growing, changing, de-veloping on a daily basis. Those parts consist of residents, neighbors, board members, staff , the developer, ven-dors, the County, the State, common areas, amenities, events, programs, covenants, needs, desires, governing documents, processes, regulations, insurance requirements, legal re-sponsibilities, liability and many oth-er components that infl uences and impacts the make up our commu-nity. The daily challenge is how does one keep harmony between all these components in a manner that strives to make Brambleton the best com-munity for its residents. That is a chal-lenge that I take on daily but can’t do alone. I often fi nd myself tweaking or changing areas on a daily basis that I can positively impact. I don’t have all the answers, as I am only human, but I do strive to make Brambleton a better place tomorrow than it was to-day; and a better place the day I leave than the day I arrived. I challenge every Brambleton resident to do the same. If we all make conscious eff orts positively impact the components of our community each day, the harmo-ny in unity will continue to create a community unlike any other and we as residents of that community will be better off .

Sincerely,

Rick Stone PCAM, LSM General Manager

The Association conducts three diff er-ent types of inspections: comprehen-sive, proactive and those for home resales. Details of which can be found on the Inspection page. The home page is where you can get answers to FAQ’s or Frequently Asked Questions that are received by my offi ce. And last but not least, you may access re-source documents I think residents may be interested in reviewing such as a sample plat or a sample complet-ed application. If you access the Design Review page you will get an overview of the De-sign Review Process. You can also access pertinent documents such as a copy of the Design Review Appli-cation, Design Guidelines and Policy Resolution #5: Design Review Proce-dures and Guidelines.

The Covenants Administration page provides an overview of how and why we enforce the Governing Doc-uments. Located on this page are policy Resolutions ;4. Enforcement Policy, 6. Vehicle Policy and 7. Pet Pol-icy. These Resolutions are frequently referred to when en-forcing the Governing Documents. Another document that can be viewed here and is fre-quently referred to is the Property Mainte-nance Standards.

The Home Based Business page has all the information you would need if you were thinking about running a business out of your home. I hope by now that most residents have visited our new website. We have received lots of great feedback. All divisions of the BCA have worked hard to provide easy access to the in-formation that is requested on a daily basis. The word Covenant means agreement, rule, or understanding. Within Brambleton, the covenants are the rules by which the Association is governed. These Covenants for Brambleton are detailed in our Dec-laration, By Laws and Design Guide-lines. To access these documents you would go to the website www.brambletonhoa.com, drop down the Resident Services tab and on the left side click on Covenants.

When you arrive on the Covenants page you will see a brief overview of what Covenants means to Bramble-ton. Also located on this page is the Revised Design Guidelines for Bram-bleton. In the Design Guidelines you will fi nd detailed information on the requirements for exterior modifi ca-tions you may want to construct on your Lot. Located just below the De-sign Guidelines is the Design Review Application that you can print for your use. You will also fi nd contact information over to the right.

Next page is the Covenants Commit-tee. Included on this page you will fi nd an overview of the Committee. To the left you can access the pages for the other Committees that serve Brambleton residents. We advertise in the Friday Flash when Committee positions become available and on this page you can access the appli-cation for membership. The meeting calendar is also published there for your review. Please check the calen-dar for any deviations to the meeting

Residents are responsible for the daily operation of carriage lamps located on their property. If you are experiencing trouble after attempting to replace the bulbs, some suggestions to consider are:

• Check the contacts for the bulb. Over time, debris can collect in the fi xture and obstruct the contacts.

• Check the breaker or GFI switch associated with the fi xture. It could be that the breaker or GFI switch may need to be reset.

• The sensor may need to be replaced. Sensors typi-cally have a life span of a few years. Most national home improvement stores have them in stock or an electrician can perform the replacement.

• If these steps do not re-store the light to operation, an electrician may be nec-essary to further trouble-shoot the problem.

The Brambleton Corner Clubhouse & Pool was host to the Third Annual Bram-bleton Kids Triathlon. Despite some areas of construction in the neighboring routes, the course and location seemed to work out much better than the previous Community Center location. This year, the start and fi nish line were together, and the bike and run routes headed out in opposite directions. The new community trails were also used for biking and running.

Once again our youth athletes rocked the event with smiles on their faces, and had a great time doing it. Congratulations to all of the participants. We hope to see you all again next year!

Loudoun County BOS ElectionGOVERNMENT RELATIONS

• Engaging with our representa-tives on all levels in support of keeping Brambleton’s kids in Brambleton schools and the on-going eff orts to keep the Dulles Cargo Road out of Brambleton;

• Communicating with Bramble-ton’s developer regarding the in-clusion of additional water play/splash-pad features to the design of our next pool;

• And perhaps most importantly, having maintained open lines of communication with residents, our Developer, and elected of-fi cials through Facebook, in-per-son conversations, event atten-dance, Resident/Board Member meetings, Newsletter articles, Board Member/Developer meet-ings, etc.

Having grown up near the Shenan-doah River in neighboring Clarke County, being a member of the Fu-ture Farmers of America and graduat-ing from Clarke County High School in the small town of Berryville, give me the confi dence that I can faith-fully represent the people of West-ern Loudoun including the Towns of Purcellville, Round Hill, Hillsboro and Middleburg. Having come from that environment, I fully support and re-spect their farms, wineries and vine-yards, breweries, Town Councils, the Rural and Transition Policy Areas de-signed to stop urban sprawl, the Rural Road Maintenance and Improvement Initiative, and the need for increased cellular and broadband coverage. As a currently appointed member of the Counties Heritage Commission, I also have an interest in working to identify and preserve our historical resources.

Dear Neighbors,

Serving Brambleton as a resident-elected member of the Brambleton Community Association’s Board of Di-rectors has given me the opportunity to meet, and to get to know many of you. So many have joined me in vol-unteering to make our community the best it can be by participating in community meetings, events and ac-tivities. It’s through speaking with my fellow Board members, residents, and neighbors at each of these venues, that it became clear to me that we need Brambleton-based representa-tion at the county level. To that end, I am running for a position on the Lou-doun County Board of Supervisors to become your next Blue Ridge District Supervisor. The election will be held in November 2015; and if elected, I’ll serve as your representative from January of 2016 through December of 2019.

Building on the successes of our cur-rent Supervisor and my personal friend, Mrs. Janet Clarke, I am com-mitting to work just as tirelessly as she has to represent the interests of our community and the greater Blue Ridge District. Supporting our eff orts in the fi ght against placement of the Cargo Road through Brambleton and initiating action on a much needed traffi c light at the intersection of Creighton and Belmont Ridge Road, has required the kind of tenacity and resolve that I intend to carry on. Su-pervisor Clarke recently announced that, for personal reasons, she would not seek re-election in 2015, and has endorsed my candidacy. She has en-couraged her supporters to do the same. I’m sincerely grateful to Super-visor Clarke for her past and future ef-forts as an advocate for Brambleton.

Working with BCA’s Board and staff over the past several years has led to a few of the accomplishments that I’m most proud of including;

• The creation of our Safety and Se-curity Committee;

• Approval and implementation of our Community Resource Offi cer Program;

• Working with residents, the LCPS system, VDOT and others to bring much needed safety improve-ments and an additional bus route for Creighton’s Corner El-ementary School;

• Working with Supervisor Clarke and VDOT to accelerate installa-tion of the now functional traf-fi c lights at the intersection of Creighton and Belmont Ridge Roads;

My time as a Sergeant of the U.S. Ma-rines and as a law enforcement su-pervisor has given me the knowledge and experience to lead. My experi-ence as a member of the Brambleton Grounds and Facilities Committee, and resident-elected member of the Brambleton Board of Directors, has given me a working knowledge of how to get things done in Loudoun County and the importance of “ALL STAKEHOLDER” involvement. Lastly and probably most importantly, as the father of two amazing young boys being raised and educated in Loudoun County, I have a distinct de-sire to work extremely hard to make

this the best place in America to raise a family!

Although we are early in the process, this is an important time to garner support and raise a suffi cient amount of funds in order to show other po-tential candidates that we’re serious about winning this election. Those interested in supporting my cam-paign can do so by sending a check to:

Family Friendly WineriesChristine Elansary, Communications Coordinator

LIFESTYLES

It's a special place where hand-craft-ed Virginia Wine pairs with friends & family. Find fun in exploration, relax-ation, and conversation. Our winery and the beautiful Piedmont country-side are your perfect backdrop for a truly memorable day.

My kids had a great time playing in the dirt at this one! Defi nitely bring tractor trucks for the young ones and maybe even a change of clothes. Yes, they were all fi lthy at the end of the day, but it was a blast. There was also plenty of seating indoors and out, and scenery was nice. If you own a dog, this is a great place to bring them too. Plenty of dog bowls, treats and other canine friends to meet. My favorite wine was the 2010 Cabernet Franc.

Cana Vineyards and Winery – Cana Vineyards and Winery is located in the beautiful Loudoun County coun-tryside, nestled between the his-toric towns of Aldie and Middleburg.

Fall is one of my favorite seasons, and one of the things I love about fall in Loudoun County is visiting local wineries. Nothing beats a beautiful crisp day complete with fall foliage, food, wine and good company. If you haven’t visited a winery yet, make sure you put that on your list for this fall. My family has visited many local wineries over the years and continue to explore what others have to off er. Having four children ranging from 3 ½ to 11 years old, there are a few fam-ily-friendly favorites I’ve enjoyed that work well with kids of all ages.

I usually look for family-friendly open space, nice views and the opportu-nity to bring your own food. The key is to get to the winery right when it opens to get the best spot. I also like to pack enough food to last through-out the afternoon. Wineries typically open at 11:00 AM on the weekends, so we usually bring a picnic lunch and afternoon snacks. Live music usually starts after lunch and is a nice touch.

For my younger kids, I pack their fa-vorite toys (don’t forget the bubbles). The older kids usually bring a football or soccer ball. Often times, we meet up with friends so all the kids come up with outdoor games to play.

Here are a few that I’ve visited with descriptions from their websites. These all met my criteria and were a lot of fun.

Barrel Oak Winery – BOW (acronym for dog lovers) is more than a winery.

land. Not only will they be providing wine tastings of their fi ne Virginia wines but will off er you a glimpse of the rich Virginia heritage with wine-making techniques from the Civil War era, historical buildings & artifacts.

When we visited, it was during a Hal-loween event so there were activities for the kids, including a scavenger hunt. The ambiance and historic feel-ing of the property was warm and inviting. The tasting room had nice charm as well, and their staff was re-ally friendly and accommodating.

Their Merlot and Peach wines were pretty tasty.

There are plenty more wineries to vis-it that are close by and family-friend-ly. If you have a favorite you'd like to share, send an email to [email protected].

Cana's tasting room is situated on a picturesque hillside. The porch and patio aff ord visitors a comfortable place to enjoy Cana wines while tak-ing in the beauty of the surrounding Bull Run and Blue Ridge Mountains. Our second fl oor tasting room aff ords a similar view of the mountains.

The views are beautiful, and the tast-ing room is equally beautiful. There is plenty of space to sit inside and out-doors, with plenty of land for the kids to run around and play.

I lean more towards red wine, but I really enjoyed their 2013 Pinot Gris. Their 2010 Tempranillo was my favor-ite.

Doukenie Winery – Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, on the edge of Virginia DC’s wine country.

This is a smaller winery, but I enjoyed

the cozy feel. My older kids had a good time fi shing at the pond and skipping rocks. While my young-est had fun pre-tending to fi sh,

he enjoyed the farm animals on the property the most.

I found the 2013 Viognier and Pinot Grigio pretty good, and I really like their 2010 “Le Vin Rouge” everyday wine.

The Winery at Bull Run – Travel back in time at their scenic, working farm vineyard in an authentic 1860's set-ting. The Winery at Bull Run adjoins over 5,000 countryside acres of the historic Manassas National Battlefi eld Park providing you with a beautiful vista of preserved 19th century farm-
