TechniquesBasecoat. Use the brush that best fits

the area being painted.Drybrush method. Drybrush all

highlights, unless otherwise indicated. When drybrushing, load the paint from adry surface. Do not use a wet palette, asthe moisture will get into the brush. Keepan old towel handy; it is great for cleaningthe brush between colors.

2. Full moon. Use the dry scruffy brushwith Cadmium Yellow to drybrush aroundthe moon to create a soft glow. Use the5/8" angular shader with Raw Sienna toshade the left side of the moon, and thenfloat a Light Buttermilk highlight on theright side.

3. Hat. Shade down the left side of thehat, above and below the hatband, andunder the ruffles with Payne’s Grey. Floathighlights on the edge of each ruffle, anddown the right side of the hat with PurpleCow. Drybrush highlights on the hat withPurple Cow, and then drybrush a few areaswith Blue Harbor (Fig. 1). Use the #10/0script liner with Foliage Green to line abovethe top and bottom ruffles; useBoysenberry Pink to line above the middleruffle. To start, load the brush by tipping it intothe first color; wipe off most of the paint ona paper towel. Lightly brush the surface in acircular motion. The harder you press, themore color you will get. Start light to seehow heavy you need to go. The firstdrybrush coat should allow some of thebackground to show through. Clean thebrush on the old towel; then pick up thenext color. Apply in the same manner usinga little less paint.

Float/shade. I always add a few drops ofEasy Float to my water—I love the way thissoftens the floats. Float color with anangular shader. Mop to soften with anoval mop.

Linework. All linework is done using the#10/0 script liner and paint thinned withwater to an ink-like consistency, unlessotherwise stated.
