PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

SWS Exhibition Chair and SWS Officer, Laura Drumwright orches-trated the best Awards Reception last week I personally have wit-nessed. Her attention to detail created a wonder and inviting reception space show-casing the beautiful Eisenman Center and the beautiful art. She worked endlessly on the details of every aspect to make this the best show ever. Laura, at the same time she prepared for the show, documented a set of record files located in SWS’s drop box, in

the cloud, that will be instrumental for next year’s show chairman. Let’s all thank Laura for a job well done. We are seeking a volunteer for next year’s show chair and assistant show chair. If you are interested let me or Laura know.

I appointed Bill Johnson this year as chairman of the investment committee. The committee includes Pat Kochan and Herb Reed as well as the President and Treasurer. Bill and his team have worked endlessly to propose an investment strategy for SWS. Part of his strategy includes long range planning for the future of SWS. I will be forming a Long-Range Planning committee soon. If you are interested in being on this committee let me know.

October brings our Fall Paint-out in Jefferson - Marshall Texas on October 6/7. Ron says, “there is no competition, just two days of fun painting and fellowship.” We currently have 25 artists signed up. SWS thanks Ron Bigony and Joe Mraz for their hard work organizing the event. It’s a good chance to see Signature Artists such as Nel Byrd, Ron Bigony and Michael Holter in action.

Lou Bono is heading up the SWS nomination committee for 2018-2019 SWS Officers. If you are interested is serving as an officer and board member please let me or Lou know. You are required to be an SWS member for at least 2 consecutive years in order to be an officer. You might be interested starting out by being an assistant.

Founding SWS member Naomi Brotherton continues to play an important role in SWS today as support to me and for the organization that she helped start in 1963. At 97, she won 1st place in the SWS 2017 Show last week with her wonderful painting, Shine On. We all congratu-late Naomi for a job and life well done!

We look forward to the cool down of October and the Fall Season.

Keep painting and never stop!

Gaylord O’Con, sws 2017-18 SWS President

CARMEN PRINCE Spotlight on Artist of the Month

I was born in Lima, Peru, and since early childhood, I had an interest in drawing and painting. In school, I used to draw the human bones for Biology class on the blackboard. My parents noticed that I was always drawing and painting, so they bought me a small watercolor pan which my mother kept through the years. Five years ago when I went to Lima for my mother’s funeral, I found some of my old paintings and the watercolor pan among her belongings. It brought so many memories of my childhood!

When I was in my early teens in Lima, I had the privilege of meeting the watercolorist and muralist Teodoro Nunez Ure-ta who painted the native people of the Peruvian Andes. His beautiful and colorful artwork inspired me to pursue wa-tercolors and I kept a couple of his paintings in my collection. Then, while in California State University at Fullerton, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in French Literature. In addition, I earned a scholarship to attend Nanterre University, Paris, for eight months in an exchange student program. This gave me the opportunity to visit Le Louvre and Orsey Museums, Versailles and Montmartre and to closely admire the paintings of the great Impressionists and Cubists of that era. Pablo Picasso, George Seurat, Edouard Manet and George Bracque are my favorite painters.

After retiring, I had time to take watercolor and acrylic workshops at the Artists Showplace and at the Artisan’s Studio. Prominent local artists that influenced my paintings are: Naomi Brotherton who taught me how to paint night scenes. I admire her work and stamina. Beverly Fuqua helped me with my drawing skills. With Maureen Brouillette, I learned to incorporate acrylics and collage into my paintings. At Jane Jones’ workshops, I learned composition and abstract de-sign. With Janet Rogers and Michael Holter, I learned how to paint portraits and the figure. At Michael Bailey’s work-shop, I learned Composition for Impact. Other watercolorists I admire and strive to learn more from are Steven Quiller, Bev Jozwiak and Mary Whyte.

I am a self-taught artist who continues to search for that magic touch of painting with watercolors. My favorite subjects are people and animals in their natural settings. In my paintings, I like to create a strong composition by showing con-trast with color and with light and dark. Within the last five years, some of my paintings have been accepted into the Animal Show at the Irving Art Association, at the Texas and Neighbors Regional Show, at the Richardson Civic Art So-ciety show as well as at two Southwestern Watercolor Society shows. I strive to never stop improving my art and try to paint every afternoon in the hopes of becoming a Signature member of SWS. For the second year, I have had the privi-lege of serving as Membership VP at SWS. Through SWS I have made many friends. Thank you SWS!

SWS EVENTS September Paintings of the Month

Keiko Tanabe was the featured artist forthe September SWS meeting. She also served as juror for the 54th SWS member-ship exhibition and held a three-day work-shop. Here, Keiko holds her demo painting from the meeting. It depicts the lobby of the Eisemann Center where the SWS membership exhibition was hung through September 30. Keiko chose to paint this venue because of the light reflected through the massive windows.

Keiko’s workshop group at The Artists Showplace Gallery.

Keiko has generously donated the painting she is holding to the right to be included in the SWS May fundraising auction.

SWS EVENTS - 54th SWS MEMBERSHIP EXHIBITION

Page 6

Our 54th Annual Membership Exhibition awards reception was held on Sunday, September 24. Guests seemed to enjoy the sweet & savory hors d'oeuvres, drinks & taking in all the beautiful art to the jazz tunes of Paul Utay's band. We were able to change the layout and accommodate seat-ing for 135. We had 185 in attendance. Some from as far away as Minnesota!

Many vendor gifts were awarded, several past members were honored with Memorial awards and SWS awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, as well as, a new award named "The President's Award" which was funded by past SWS Presidents to the tune if $500. We also awarded $1,000 to Alicia Farris for the Edgar Whitney Transparent Watercolor Award and a $1,500 prize to our Naomi Brotherton, Best of Show to Ingrid Albrecht for her intriguing And Off To The Park We Go watercolor piece!  In total we awarded over $12,000! But, the icing on the cake was likely that our dear Naomi Brother-ton won 1st place...she is quite the effervescent artist at 97!

The show was hung for the month of September at the lovely Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas.  Many patrons of the arts were able to enjoy our art as they took in other shows there.

A number of reception guests commented how this was likely our strongest show ever. Congratu-lations are in order, again, to everyone in the Exhibition. We hope even more of our members will take the opportunity to enter next year!

Letter from Exhibition Chair Laura Drumwright:

Thank you, Laura and your exhibition committee, for a beautiful show!
