Dear ladies,

The busiest time of the year is upon us. Our club is buzzing with activities and preparations for our two main events of the year. The 30th Anniversary IWC Gala event is now fully booked. We hope that you will all have a fabulous evening and together we will create unforgettable memories. Besides us, the IWC members, we will have special

guests – former IWC members, flying in from different parts of the world, IWC partners, Ambassadors, Honorary consuls, and performers. Do take advantage to beautify yourselves with the great offer of Studio 88 found inside the newsletter pages.

Our second main event is the 25th Anniversary Bazaar. Preparations are also on the way. The Bazaar team is complete with tasks assigned. We still need your contributions in terms of ideas and volunteering to improve its execution. A lot of other organizations and clubs would like to support us in various ways and contribute to the Bazaar and its outcome. The Bazaar team members have set a very optimistic target of achieving 450,000 BGN this year through the joint effort of embassies, volunteers and the Bulgarian public. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

In the past month we enjoyed varied activities from anti-terrorist attack and shooting training, where some of our ladies held a real gun in their hands for the first time, to a delicious Greek cooking demo, or an Italian lunch with fellow-members under the last summer rays.

The IWC is happy to support its members in their endeavors. On this occasion we are pleased to announce that the IWC is honoured to nominate Johanna N. Alcantara de Tejeda, a valued IWC member, for the International Dominican Immigrant Award “Sr. Oscar de la Renta”. Johanna and her family are outstanding Dominican ambassadors representing and promoting their country’s culture and values through the Dominican stall at the IWC Bazaar for many years.

We are also pleased to advise that the IWC’s nomination for Donor of the Year Presidential Award is in the category for “Most Successful Partnership”. The IWC has decided to put forward its partnership with M3 Communications. Best of luck to all of us as a lot of important tasks lie ahead!

Best regards,

Albena JonesIWC President

The International Day of Non-Violence is marked on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.

According to General Assembly resolution A/RES/61/271 of 15 June 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day is an occasion to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness”. The resolution reaffirms “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”.

24 October – United Nations Day

UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.

Rila Monastery was founded in the first half of the 10th century. Its history is directly related to St. Ivan of Rila, the first Bulgarian hermit, who settled in the region and devoted his life to fasting and prayers. The monastery was initially situated near the cave where the saint dwelled. After he passed away in 946, St. Ivan of Rila was buried in the cave in which he found solitude. Tsar Peter (927-969) brought the relics of the wonderworker from Rila to Sredets (Sofia). It was probably then when the holy man was canonized as a saint. The relics were returned to Rila Monastery in 1469.

Throughout the centuries Rila Monastery has always been the spiritual, educational and cultural centre of Bulgaria. During the Bulgarian Revival Period (18th – 19th centuries) Rila Monastery set up approximately 50 metochions in the large Bulgarian towns and villages where some of the most well-educated Rila monks performed their religious rites, established schools, and brought pilgrims to the monastery.

In 1961 Rila Monastery was declared Rila Monastery National Museum. In 1976 it was declared a National Historical Reserve and in

1983 it was included in the List of World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.

A museum which exhibits items providing information about the history of the monastery throughout the centuries was established in Rila Monastery at the end of the 19th century. The museum exhibition comprises valuable examples of Bulgarian and foreign art from the 14th –

19th centuries. The most valuable exhibit is the wooden cross decorated with exquisite miniature wood-carvings by Father Rafail. The master wood-carver used the finest chisels and tools and worked for many years until he finally finished his masterpiece in 1802, when he lost his sight as a result of the hard toil. It depicts 36 biblical scenes – 18 on each side, and over 600 miniature figures.Rila Monastery is a functioning monastery. There are car and coach parks outside the two monastery gates. Accommodation is available at the monastery. Icons, albums, cards, souvenirs, and traditional Bulgarian crafted items are sold at the monastery bookstore, the shops at Hrelyo’s Tower, and in the area around the monastery.

RILA MONASTERY is one of the symbols of Bulgaria and is also a popular tourist destination. The monastery lies in the recesses of Rila Mountain, between Rilska and Drushlyavitsa Rivers, at 1147 m above mean sea level. It is located about 120 km away from Sofia and 41 km away from Blagoevgrad.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.

Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries the incidence has been rising up steadily in the last years due to increase in life expectancy, increase urbanization and adoption of western lifestyles.

Currently there is not sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option. In such cases, palliative care to relief the suffering of patients and their families is needed. /from: https://www.who.int/

Each year a number of Bulgarian hospitals perform free examinations for breast cancer prevention throughout the month of October. In Sofia one such hospital is the Specialized University Hospital for Active Oncology Treatment and it will join again in 2019 the collaborative efforts of colleagues from other hospitals in this unique battle for women’s health and quality of life. The examinations will be conducted from October 1 to October 31 - every working day from Monday to Thursday, in Room 127, from 12.30 pm. On Wednesdays the screening will start at 1pm.

To register call: 02/8076299 - September 18 to October 3 between 10.00 and 13.00.

IKEBANA FLOWER ARRANGEMENT WORKSHOP

Ikebana is ancient Japanese art for arrangement of flowers. The word ikebana means “To give to the flowers new life”. Ikebana is officially art from XV th century. In this period floral arrangements were made by monks trained in art under the patronage of the shogun.Ikebana reflects the person who arranged it. Flowers, no matter how beautiful come from nature. We are the ones, using these natural materials, to create beauty with our feelings. This is different from natural beauty, this is an art.

Sogetsu ikebana can be created anytime, anywhere, by anyone in any part of the word, with any kind of materials. Sogetsu school was fount 1926th year by Sofu Teshigahara. It is most modern ikebana school in Japan.

We are following of Sogetsu school and Rima Mirska, who found the first ikebana school in Bulgaria. Our teachers are certificated from Sogetsu school in Tokyo. We named our school Gagetsu which means “Flower and moon – symbol of happiness and harmony”. It will be led by Maria Kemenchejieva.
