South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion (SCPX) project activities are progressing with a great
pace across Georgia
Important part of BP’s and its partners’ contribution to Georgia is supplying gas from the South Caucasus
Pipeline for domestic use, which provides great value to the country. Our major current focus is on the expansion
of the South Caucasus pipeline project in Georgia. With development of the Shah Deniz 2 gas reserves in the
Caspian Sea, the South Caucuses pipeline will be expanded, increasing gas supply and adding employment. In
Georgia 2 compressor stations are being built, each bigger than 50 football pitches, 62 km of additional pipe is
being layed from the border of Azerbaijan and we continue building a new gas metering station to connect with
TANAP at the Turkish border. Georgia will benefit as a recipient of Shah Deniz Stage 2 gas, but also directly
from the South Caucasus Pipeline expansion project construction and subsequent operations. The project is
expected to provide USD 2 billion in foreign direct investment to the country. Some 20% of the capital
expenditure is planned to be spent on goods and services provided by local suppliers. Around 350,000 metric
tonnes of materials are being transited through Georgian ports and railway. More than 2500 jobs are already
created on construction projects. Following the start-up over 100 additional staff will be required to operate
these new facilities for decades to come.
Today in Georgia SCPX activities are progressing with a great pace across the country. The first shipment of line
pipe was successfully delivered to Poti port in November 2014. All of the line pipes and some of the valves
have now arrived in country. Preparation of the pipeline construction route, stringing of pipes and welding
activities are progressing well.
We continue civil works and construction of permanent and temporary facilities at the Compressor Station 1 site
in Gardabani including warehouse and accommodation camps on site. We have done extensive civil ground
preparation and major pieces of equipment - 4 compressors, gas turbine drivers and 2 gas turbine generators are
now installed.
At the same time site civil works are underway in support of compressor station 2 site high in the mountains near
Tsalka. An accommodation camp has been constructed for workers, a road built to the compressor station 2 site,
and extensive civil works are underway. Excavation works for compressor foundation have commenced. In
addition, near Akhaltsikhe, civil works have commenced on the new metering stations at the Turkish border.
EU-Georgia Business Council (EUGBC) 14
As the SCPX project activities unfold the project continues to bring benefits locally. Today more than 2500
people are employed on SCPX project with more than 75% Georgian citizens.
The Southern Gas Corridor including Shah Deniz Stage 2, South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion projects in
Azerbaijan and Georgia, Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and Trans Adriatic Pipeline projects comprise
one of the largest and most complex endeavours in the history of the energy industry. The suite of projects
requires cooperation and long-term relationships between 11 companies, seven governments and 11 wholesale
gas buyers.
Shah Deniz Stage 2 is expected to provide 16 billion cubic meters per year of gas to millions of consumers in
Georgia, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria and Italy. This is enough gas to meet the needs of every capital city along the
Southern Gas Corridor − more than twice over. Six billion cubic meters will be supplied to Turkey, and 10
billion cubic meters of gas will go to Europe.

IP Backbone with a new IP PoP in Tbilisi, Georgia. This strategic development is also in accordance with
Georgia’s main ISP Silknet’s vision of improving broadband internet access in the region.
Located in a carrier neutral Data Center, this new point of presence will represent the first Tier-1 PoP in the
Caucasus Region and will address the increasing demand of Tier-1 IP Transit service not only from underserved
Caucasus and Caspian Regions but also from Middle East and Central Asia through Silknet’s and Turkcell
Superonline’s fiber networks connecting the Tbilisi PoP to TI Sparkle’s IP Global backboneSeabone.
The Tbilisi PoP is the result of a trilateral partnership between Global Service Provider TI Sparkle, Georgia’s
main ISP Silknet and Turkey’s leading Network Provider Turkcell Superonline. Once launched, the new PoP
will be interconnected to TI Sparkle’s Seabone Global IP backbone through Istanbul and Frankfurt via
diversified terrestrial routes and it will transform Tbilisi into a regional telecommunications hub by ensuring full
