October
Dear Families,
We are fully back in the swing of things here at Buckingham! As a staff, we are finding new and creative ways to communicate the goings-on here at school to our
parent community. Limited access to the school means that parents are no longer able to see student work on bulletin boards in the hallways, so we will be showcasing classroom work in the newsletter, on our website and on Twitter. You can follow us on Twitter @buckinghamSD41. The Buckingham website will also have all up-to-date school information. We encourage you to subscribe to the website to automatically receive school updates.
I would like to thank families for being so diligent about keeping your children at home when they are feeling unwell.
We recently sent home a copy of the revised daily Health Check and appreciate your continued support in asking your child(ren) the Health Check questions before coming to school each day. A copy of the updated Health Check can be found on our website. You can also visit the Burnaby School District website for the most up-to-date health and safety information.
Recent school events, like the Terry Fox Run, looked different due to COVID health and safety regulations and we certainly missed having our Buckingham families cheering us on as we ran. However, the Buckingham staff and students managed to keep the spirit alive and had fun doing so. Our community also raised $445 for Cancer research! Thank you so much to the families that generously donated to this cause.
Starting tomorrow, and continuing Friday mornings, we will be playing music on the front lawn of the school in the morning. There is so much going on in the world that we’re hoping to bring a little Friday joy to our community. If you so choose, you and your child(ren) can showcase your groovy moves as you approach the school. Bring your dance moves and feel free to email your (school appropriate) song requests.
As always, we appreciate your continued support and feel free to reach out anytime. With gratitude and thanks, Ms. Carson Principal
SCHOOL NEWS
Our photographer will be at Buckingham on Thursday, October 8th to take
individual photos for our students. This year’s process will be a bit different as
we implement COVID safety protocols. Portraits will be standing only to
eliminate touch points. Photo retakes will be held on Monday, November 2nd
for any students who are absent or require retakes.
All ordering and payment will be done online ONLY. Ordering information will
be emailed closer to the date.
THE GREAT BRITISH COLOMBIA SHAKE OUT
We will be joining many schools throughout our province in “The Great Shakeout” Earthquake
preparedness drill on Thursday, October 15th at 10:15am. We will simulate an earthquake and
students will practice a “duck and cover” procedure in their class at the time of the drill.
LOOKING FOR GENTLY USED RAIN GEAR
With the schools across the district now participating
in West Coast recess, it has come to our attention
that some students are lacking proper rain gear to
be comfortable outside in the inclement weather.
To help support these students, we are collecting
gently used umbrellas, raincoats, and boots.
If your child has outgrown any of these items,
please consider donating them and our staff will
redistribute them to students across the district. You
can donate items by putting them in a closed
plastic bag and placing the bag in the bin located
in the front entrance of the school. The items will be
left to sit for a minimum of four days before being
redistributed to families. Should your child(ren) need
an umbrella, raincoat or rainboots, please contact

your support!
TRAFFIC SAFETY
Your child’s safety, and the safety of
others, is important to us. Please help
ensure everyone's safety by following the
City of Burnaby traffic guidelines below:
• No Stopping Zones: Please do not
wait or park in areas that indicate no stopping. If
your child needs to be walked to class, please park
where parking is allowed and NOT in the No
Stopping Zones.
• No U-turns.
• No jaywalking
• No 3-point turns.
• Do not enter the teacher’s parking lot.
• Do not turn around in neighbor’s driveways
We recognize that there is not a lot of parking in the area
for parents. We do not even have adequate parking for
staff on some days. We really do need everyone’s
cooperation in this matter.
Parents, guardians and neighbors who notice traffic
violators are encouraged to report information including
license plate numbers directly to the Burnaby City
Engineering Traffic at (604) 294-7460.
Please note: Traffic rules around Buckingham are not set by
the school, parents or principal. If everyone works together
to follow these guidelines, we will make Buckingham a
better place for everyone.

October 23: Professional Day
(School Closed)
This week your child came to library to borrow
books for the first time. They received a new plastic
bag to carry their books to and from school in.
On your child’s library day, their class’s books will be
returned to the library and, for health and
safety reasons, put in quarantine for at least 72
hours.
Thank you for your support!

DIVISION 4 - ZENTANGLE ART
Ms. Wong’s class is learning all about the Zentangle method.
It’s an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful
images by drawing structured patterns. We call these
patterns, tangles. You can create tangles with combinations
of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves and orbs.
DIVISION 6
EXPLORING SENTENCES
During our unit on Terry Fox, we dug deeper into an article about Terry Fox. We explored sentences! We wrote down all
the vocabulary we could think of in the article passages. Some of the words that we associated with Terry were: boy,
person, son, famous, helper, hero, founder of the Marathon of Hope.
Also, we quickly learned there are different meanings to words and phrases. For example, in the context of “the toast of
Toronto…”, it does not mean the bread of Toronto… we had a lot of fun learning about new meanings of words!
