COVER PAGE PROFILE

Aged BMW emblem on a BMW 501

This month’s cover page profile doesn’t aim to highlight one of the many different versions of the BMW, but it focuses in on the actual logo of BMW or the roundel found on both the front and back ends of our cars.

This has been much speculation as to how the iconic design came about, but the fact remain that it is one of the most recognizable design marks ever. It was July 1917 that Franz Joseph Popp registered the name, “Bayerische Motoren

Werke” with the intention of separating from the prior Rapp Motorenwerke. The most common speculative story focuses in on the newly formed BMW advertising department had derived the design to highlight and increase sales of the new BMW radial engine intended for aircraft. Alternative stories indicate the blue and white focus on the heritage of the Bavarian state where BMW maintains its world headquarters.

The Roundel has evolved in its 100 years of use. What started out as a very simple flat design utilizing thin condensed text grew into a fully developed three-dimensional appearing logo through the use of light and shape. The letters even grew to a strong block appearance equally separated in the upper half of the outter black banner, but the overall design of the four-poster blue and white checkerboard pattern set inside a circular black border remains as icon and timeless today as it did in the early 1900s.

According to the website bmwism.com, the cover photograph displays an exceptionally aged Roundel found on an early 1950’s 501 sedan. It does have exceptional patina, but also reveals the detail and craftsmanship that went into the creation of the piece.

NEW MEMBERS

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO ATTEND EACH AND EVERY EVENT AND SHARE YOUR PASSION FOR ALL THINGS BMW AND EXPLORE

WHAT YOUR BMW CCA CLUB HAS TO OFFER.

M SQUARED = ACS M2

So you drive off the lot of your local BMW dealer in your new M2, and suddenly you realize that the adequate and sufficient 365 hp BMW provided is just simply just not enough. Oh what ever will you do now that such a dilemma has struck you? Will you continue motoring on merely living in such deplorable conditions? Thankfully, the mad scientists in Aachen, Germany at the venerable German tuner AC Schnitzer have the prescription to cure for your atrocities, and have created an amazing road-going monster!

The paint hadn’t even fully cured, before they got their hands on the new BMW M2 and slathered on a solid dose of carbon fiber in addition to adding another 50 ponies under the bonnet. Yep, that is a whopping 420 horsepower plied to a scant 3450 pound chassis, surely is a recipe for some boulevard hooliganism.

Many in the automotive journalism industry have harkened the stock M2 to what the E36/M3 should have evolved into, but with all that said even the E36 had it’s own demons to deal with. Many tuners were very keen to exercise those demons just as they have in the new Schnitzer M2.

The already aggressive front takes on a menacing angry look with a full carbon fiber chin spoiler and winglets going up the fascia. Behind the scenes Schnitzer added a charge cooler to optimize efficiency and performance in addition to extracting the additional grunt. Out back there is a distinctively stylish rear spoiler and a health dose of carbon fiber on the rear valance. Lastly a set of distinctively larger Schnitzer styled wheels are included to balance out the overall execution. This car reminds you of just how a great car can be made even better, and the ability to obtain a little exclusivity in a society where everything has become the same.

FSC 2017 Ultimate Getaway & Annual Dinner

January 13-14 is fast approaching. FSC’s combined Naples/Tampa Annual Dinners will be presented as a single "Ultimate Getaway" event, and will take place at the Hyatt Regency located central to FSC membership in Sarasota, Florida.

Our Keynote Speaker will be Mike Miller, Technical Editor for the Roundel and Bimmer magazines. Mike will combine entertaining quips with elements of tech talk. Be prepared to experience live audience participation. Mike will also be attending the Friday evening reception, where members will have the opportunity to meet Mike personally. Mike looks forward to taking questions during dinner Saturday evening.

The weekend has several activities planned for members and guests beginning with a Private Poolside Reception on Friday evening. FSC will host a Show & Shine on Saturday morning beginning at 10am until noon. Trophies will be awarded during dinner Saturday night. There is no entry fee for the Show & Shine. Show format will be determined by participation and will be announced prior to the start of the show.

Want to have a little fun? Saturday afternoon promises to bring a ton of laughs as we roll out our own miniature autocross. Members will “drive” remote control BMW’s through a timed-autocross course. Should be fun…and you don’t have to worry about road rash!

Too much activity, then relax by the pool and take in a lazy Saturday afternoon while you work on that winter tan.

Dinner guests are invited to mix and mingle during the cocktail hour at the Boathouse beginning at 6 pm. Dinner will follow in the main room of the Boathouse. Members will enjoy sounds of the times with live music, while taking the beautiful views of the boat basin.

We’re looking forward to a great weekend. Space is limited and when we reach the maximum attendance RSVP’s will close. RSVP via Mortorsportreg.com AND RSVP for activities on the FSC webpage.

SEBRINGTHE FUTURE (OR FATE) OF THE BMW CORRAL

As we fast approach the new-year and we begin our annual bout with stir-craziness, our thoughts have already begun to lust for that annual trek out to Sebring to take-in the Twelve Hours of Sebring race.

For many this passage is an annual tradition dating back many years. We reminisce of times shared with friends, family and other car buffs from around the world. There’s just no other place like Sebring.

M e m b e r s may recall, in 2014 the Florida

Suncoast chapter was forced to stand-down on the underwriting and production of the Sebring BMW Corral. I use the word forced purely to illustrate the inability of FSC’s budget to withstand the goliath financial obligation the Corral has grown to become.

In July of this year, your Florida Suncoast Chapter convened a summit in Tampa to determine if we could garner sufficient financial support to produce a Corral for the upcoming 2017 Sebring race. Present for the “Sebring

Summit” were Presidents, Vice Presidents and/or Treasurers from all Florida BMW Chapters. In addition, Dwayne Mosley, Regional Vice President of the South-Atlantic region was invited and attended.

To be fair, I will attempt to explain the Himalayan roadblock the Sebring folks have placed in front of our efforts. To begin with the estimated budget to produce a BMW Sebring Corral comes in around $20,000. Yep, you read that right, $20k. Sebring has the costs structured so that all sales are revenue-advantaged for Sebring, but not for the underwriter. There is a significant and independent charge for each of the following: 1) space (land); 2) the tent, tables and chairs (vendor controlled by Sebring); 3) ticket price (access and price controlled). In addition, all food and concessions is vendor controlled by Sebring, as well as, Closed Circuit TV access, which is priced at a substantial fee per hook-up. Needless to say this budget far exceeds FSC’s annual dues income from BMW CCA.

IN THE NEWSThe 2017 BMW i8 is scheduled to stay in production until October 2017, so at that time it will have had a sixteen-month run. This also lends

credence to rumors of a facelifted i8 for model year 2018, which is also supposed to be the first model year for the i8 Roadster.

June 2017 will be the last month for production of all 2017 2 Series coupes and convertibles, including the M2. The 2 Series is due a Life Cycle Improvement (LCI) for model year 2018, so production for that series will start probably mid to late summer.

The model year 2017 3 Series will be in production until June, July, or October depending on the individual model, except for the 2017 BMW M3 that will cease production in February. Four plants are involved in making 3 Series Sedans: Munich, Regensburg, and Dingolfing in Germany and Rosslyn in South Africa.

Like the M3, the 2017 M4 production line will stop in February. In fact, all 4 Series production will stop in February. The 4 Series is also due for a Life Cycle Improvement, which observers believe will be 2018 models. However, March 2017 is pretty early for a 2018 model year LCI launch. Unknown at this time is if there will be a multi-month gap between model years.

Production is already underway on the new G30 5 Series 530i, 530xi, 540i, and 540xi in Dingolfing, and that will continue until June of 2017 when the 2018 model takes over. A holdover is the 5 Series Gran Turismo that will end production in February. The latest rumors have the 5 Series GT being converted to a 6 Series for the next model year, but since BMW is still testing what appears to be a camouflaged 6 Series GT, that particular model would probably appear as a 2018 model at the earliest.

All 2017 6 Series Coupes and Gran Coupes will end production in February, so we obviously expect 2018 models shortly thereafter.

The same appears to be true for 2017 BMW 7 Series Sedans, even for the recently launched M760i that just started production last month. It appears therefore that the 2017 M760i will have only a four-month run.

The 2017 iteration of littlest Sports Activity Vehicle, the BMW X1, will cease production in June.

Now for the Spartanburg family of X vehicles. By the time production ends for gasoline-powered versions of the 2017 BMW X3, they will have been coming off the line for 17 months, which is a very long run for a single model year. Production of the F48 will end in August, with the G01 2018 BMW X3 expected to launch sometime after that, possibly at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September. Other sources have pegged market availability of the next-generation X3 at around February or March of 2018.

The 2017 X4 Sports Activity Coupe will run until March, giving it a full twelve months of production.

Production of the F15 2017 X5 and F85 X5 M will proceed until August. These will have been in production for thirteen months except for the X5 35 diesel, for which start of production is delayed until January due to more extensive government testing resulting from the VW diesel scandal.

The 2017 X6 and X6 M will also be rolling out of Spartanburg until August.

The 2017 M550i xDrive and 530e iPerformance were not on the list presumably because they had not yet been market launched. They will be officially launched to the press at next month's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
